Wen Haircare Therapy - reviews?

Thanks for the extra info here - and to the others giving great inside advice! My whole life I've hoped for a 'natural' way to make my hair softer, etc. I'm excited to try this!
I am still a bit confused about your total routine. I get that you co wash on most days, and maybe do a second conditioning on top of that - but how often do you "really" wash your hair (ie, how often do you use actual SHAMPOO?) and when you do wash w/ shampoo do you then conditin afterwards too? AND is that w/ the 'cheap' co washing conditioner, or your 'good stuff' conditioner? Would anyone be willing to type out a typical weekly routine? (You know, like Monday= co wash + 2nd conditioning, Tues = shampoo + no conditioner...etc., etc.) I'd be cool to see what different routines are out there, so I can see if any will help my frazzled :sad2::eek: hair. Thanks for all the great advice all!!:goodvibes

Co washing is cleaning your hair. No shampoo or extra conditioner is really needed, except on the ends if you have dry hair

Think of it like cold cream for your hair. The conditioner combines with the dirt and rinses off your hair together when you rinse it off. I suggest co washing every day for a while to get that clean feeling while your scalp adjusts to not being so dried out from shampoo.

I have been using it for over a year and if I do have to use shampoo if I run out, my hair is dry and flyaway. I'll never go back to shampoo.

I've been doing it for a few weeks now and I have yet to wash my hair with shampoo. So far everyday I've been co-washing with a cheap Suave conditioner, leaving it in for about 5 minutes, rinsing well, and following up with a good conditioner for a few minutes and then rinsing well. It's worked great so far and I don't feel the need to wash with shampoo at all.

I have used the WEN Cleansing Conditioner for about 3 years now. It is the best product I have found for my hair. I notice a difference immediately if I change products. I am on auto -delivery with QVC. I like the Tea Tree and the Fig the best. I have long hair and I wash it everyday and also blowdry and flat iron it every day.

I used to have to get my hair trimmed every 4-6 weeks because the flat iron would just ruin my hair and the ends would get so frizzy. I am due for a trim here soon - but the last time I was in the salon was in August. My hair does not get the frizzy ends anymore and it really helps in the humidity also as my hair tends to curl up.

So, you get 2 thumbs up from me for this product. I would also recommend going through QVC. They have an awesome return policy. You can try it for 30 days - if you don't like it they will reimburse you the full amount.

I've never tried Wen, but started co-washing after looking into it. Ive been co-washing a little over a year now, and couldn't be happier with my hair. Before it always felt "hard" after I washed. I always thought it was the quality of the water, but once I switched over to co-washing it softened, and I never really have to deal with frizz any longer.

A few things I've found that may be helpful to people who've tried and found their hair to be limp.

1)Before starting co-washing wash your hair wash it with shampoo. You need to remove any build up that's already on your hair so you can start with fresh new hair.

2) Use conditioners and styling products that don't have silicones in them. (Any product that has ingredients that end in -cone are out. i.e. dimithicone). Silicones coat the hair, but won't come out unless you are using a sulfate based product. If you use them while your co-washing they will just build up. I use the cheap VO5 or Suave conditioners to wash, and follow up with L'oreal Pro Viv for curly wavy hair for a more intense conditoning and detangling. A bunch of the Herbel Essences styling products are 'cone free.

3) Once a week try using a apple vinegar rinse. Just mix a tablespoon or so in a large cup of water and pour it over your hair before a final conditioning. It naturally gets rid of build up.

4) and this is the toughest thing. You need to give it some time. The first week or so was horrible for me. My hair felt limp, and my scalp itchy. I had read though that it meant your hair and skin needed time to adjust. Once I got past that first week it worked much better.

I found lots of great tips and advice at the naturally curly website. Lots of great discussions in the forums, with lots of advice about products that work best.

If anyone has any questions let me know. Co-washing really saved my hair. I can't say enough good things about it.

I pretty much condition wash every day in the summer and every other day in the winter. Once a week I may shampoo using a non-sulfate solid shampoo bar, usually after my Zumba classes, but really the co-washing works just as well. On the days I don't condition wash, I just water wash (Rinse my hair down, and scrub it a bit as if I'm using shampoo), and then follow up with my better conditioner.

A lot of it really depends on your hair. My hair is very thick, fairly wavy with only a little bit of real curls and runs on the dry side. You have to play around and see what combination works best for you.

Thanks for all the responses! And alot of great tips!

I may try some of the other recommendations before trying the Wen. I color my hair about 5 weeks (i would be all grey without color!).

I wash & condition daily, use a defrizzing serum, followed by a volumizing spray, blow dry w/a round brush and then use a paste. I am finding that lately my hair just looks and feels so dry. I use bumble and bumble product but lately I have just had a lot of bad hair days, ugh!

My mom swears by WEN but I do not. I have greasy hair, if I wash in the AM it is already greasy by bedtime. I found WEN left me greasy and limp. It never seemed clean enough. It had no bounce in it and it shined from grease not normal shine.

My mom does not have greasy hair and she LOVES Chaz's products. I have to admit that I love the styling cream that came in my mom's QVC set. It smells amazing and it's a great product to put in your hair after a shower if you air dry like I do most days.

I don't need to use any additional products(used to use de-frizz, gel or mousse, and texture paste) but use the Wen styling cream if it's humid. It's got the consistency of the old school V05 tube of conditioning treatment, buy doesn't leave my hair greasy.

Wow - so much great info!!! I am VERY eager to try this!
I do worry a bit because, like some others I tend to be a bit greasy...but sadly, with VERY dry hair - especially the ends.... it's a lose/lose situation. :sad2:

That having greasy roots but VERY dry hair is a toughy - then throw in the whoel frizzy, flyaway, hard as nails hair....:guilty:

Glad to see so many:thumbsup2 reports - there's hope!

I always wondered what the hype was with Wen products. I have never heard of co-washing, but I am going to try this, too. The only thing I don't understand is why you have to use so much. Isn't hair like a sponge and can only absorb so much liquid? Does the rest just get wasted?

I have dry, coarse, curly hair that will frizz easily. I pull it out straight on a big round brush and use a flat iron on it. When I've tried just letting it dry naturally and be curly it just gets big and frizzy. Anyone else have this same situation and find that Wen products or co-washing works well? Either for having it straighten nicely or with leaving it curly but not having it look like a brillo pad?

I am intrigued by this!

I think you'll understand why you need so much once you first try it. It takes a lot more conditioner to wash your hair than it does shampoo.

With co-washing you really need to coat the hair completely to get it clean. That's why it's great that you can use those cheap suave conditioners to wash with.

My hair is a mix of curls and waves, but it's very dry and fizzes easily. Co-washing has saved my poor head from looking like a ball of frizz. Here's my before and after shots:

If you have curly hair, I'd recomend checking out the naturallycurly.com website. It's where I started gathering info. Lots of advice there depending on what kind of curls you have about what products to use, how to dry your hair etc. They have advice for wavies through tight kinky curls. The forums there are great for help.

Yeah if I tried to put White Rain, Suave, or VO5 in my hair it would turn into a giant flaky itchball. I haven't seen any of those brands sold around here in at least 10 years anyway. I guess condition cleansing is not for me.

Love Wen! :thumbsup2
....When I co wash with White Rain tropical coconut conditioner(Dollar Tree) it comes in a close second, but it's a little too drying for me.

Goodfaries quote made me think of the bolded part of your statement Fakeredhead.... is White Rain (etc.) drying? I am at about day 3 of this experiment and have been using White Rain ....but my hair is very dry so dont want to dry it out more!:scared1: (I guess I dont think of 'conditioner' as drying, but guess I'm wrong.) Is there a particular ingrediant in this conditioner that's drying, that I could try to avoid?

Now, that being asked, and being at day 3 I AM having the greasy scalp sitation.... and yet most of my hair still feels quite dry....so far it does not seem to be working for me. But, I will keep on for atleast a week (or until my boss asks if I'm going thru early menopause as one earlier poster mentoined :guilty:) Hopefuly, that wont happen!:thumbsup2

White Rain makes my hair less conditioned than Wen, but more than reg shampoo and conditioner. That's what I was trying to say. It's my second choice. If your hair is really dry you can always add extra to the ends when it's wet as a leave in conditioner.

Thanks so much for this thread! I tried co-washing yesterday and my hair was so soft after just the first time!

I was skeptical at first as my roots are usually so oily (and I dye my hair monthly, blow dry daily, and straighten daily so my hair goes through a lot of abuse) and even though I was washing my hair every day with shampoo by the end of the day my hair felt so "dirty" at the roots but still dry through the rest of my hair. After co-washing, my hair didn't feel weighed down or oily at all (even at the end of the day) and I had zero static frizz. I will be doing this a couple times a week for sure! Thanks again!

I had read womewhere that some people may have problems with conditioners with heavier proteins. My hair loves proteins, so I never really read much more about it.

Check and be sure the conditioners are using don't have silicones in them, and be sure you started with fresh silcone free hair. An apple cider vinager rinse may help you out too. Mine felt like that too, but it did clear up.

Thanks. I'll never go back again. I've been shampooing a bit more, but now when I do I just use sulfate free shampoo bars. I love that it helped bring my waves back to life.

Thanks again for all the info! I may have missed it but do you rinse w/ the vinegar striaght, or dilute it? And where so you get the sulfate-free shampoo bars? thanks!:)
