Well we are home and DD2 is sick!!!

As a preschool teacher and a mother of 3, have run into hand, foot and mouth many times. And yes, I have even had it. So I feel so sorry for your child :guilty: cause I know it hurts! Well wishes :wave2: !

I believe this is what my son got but the doctor gave me the medical term. It was a viral infection that caused sores in the back of the throat. (Kind of like strep). I dont know how he got it really. I think it was from playing with toys at the doctors office. he is 19 months and stays home with me and got sick a few days after his visit to the doc.

Anyway my doctor told me that it was going around and usually does this time of year and that most kids get it by the age of about 2. Its hard to prevent because by the time they touch something their hands are in their mouths. As my son was playing with the toys the doctor called and before we reached the room (5 Feet away) he had his hand in his mouth, My DH washed his hands but alas it was too late! 3 days later he had a temp of 104 (I thought it was due to his immunizations initally) 4days he would not eat and when i gave him orange juice he screamed for dear life, thats how i found out it was a sore throat.

The doc told me that the fever and sore throat are later symptoms of the infection.

Thanks for the infomation. I guess you can't really prevent your kids from getting this. Unless you want to make the kid crazy by wiping his/her hands EVERY TIME they touch something or just NOT go anywhere.

I'm the type to break out the diaper wipes anytime DS touches ANYTHING when we're out somewhere, but I don't want to make him afraid of life either. It's tough to be a Mom! lol I don't want him to get sick, but I do want him to enjoy life. ????? :confused3

Hope DD gets well soon! :sunny:

My DS2 just resolved his viral throat infection similar to HFMD. I feel for you! It took a week- 4 days of fever and 3 more of sore throat to be totally better. The good news is that he is perfectly normal now! It was heart breaking- he kept asking DH and I to "make me feel better." I think the hardest part was that he was hungry and couldn't eat because his throat hurt so badly. So he cried because he was hungry, he cried because he wanted to feel better, he cried, and he cried... But today was a great day- hope you have a great day soon, too!

The medical term he used was Herpangina, so when I looked at it on the net it also called it HFMD.

Last night her fever spiked again but I gave her Motrin and she slept all night. She has been doing Ok today, but not eating much at all. More whiny than normal and she has had a few naps. I NEED ONE!!! :rotfl:

I have made sure to wash hands more and everything is getting sprayed with Lysol (not sure if that will kill it) because DD6 starts school next week and I cannot have her getting this!!

Just wondering if after these two days, your little one is feeling more herself again?

Lol...sometimes they bounce back so quickly it's hard to imagine that they were sick only a few short days ago...although HFAM can be one of the longer trials for both mother and child.

WELL..DD2 is doing better and much back to her old self, but this morning DD6 began the fever and sore throat. I looked in the back of her throat and it is blood red and looks like little bumps back there which was one of the symptoms of this so HERE WE GO AGAIN!!!! Well at least she should be over it before school starts on Wednesday. Then mom and dad will get it... :confused3 UGHHHH!!!

Thanks for checking on her !!!

I hope your little ones are feeling better. It's tough to see your babies sick.
I want to thank you for the *heads up* as we will be in the *world* in a few weeks and my DS2 puts anything and everything in his mouth.. yuck! And the worse thing is he loves to drink pool water.... SUPER YUCK! :sad2:
I'll be giving him a pacifier to keep him from putting anything gross in his mouth.... I can deal with the *looks* I get when he publicly displays his paci.

I hope your DD gets well soon! And I have 1st hand experience with getting sick at Disney, unfortunately! I was a nail biter my whole life, and we went to Florida for a week in the end of Feb into beginning or March. I bit my nails like there was no tomorrow. So, I got a nasty 4 day stomach flu. :sad2: It was the morning that we were supposed to leave, and I woke up and puked. So we had to stay an extra day. Then the next day, we all piled into our car and made the loong 17hr drive home. Thankfully, we didn't hit any traffic, and we left at 4 or 5am, so we actually made the drive home in 14hrs. Ever since that trip, I have been extra careful down there. My mom brings hand sanitizer wipes and I wash my hands extra carefully every chance I get. And I don't touch my nails at all.

....welllll...just think, it could be worse. This could have happened at a much more critical time, for instance. This way, you know what to do...and I'm sure DD6 will doubly appreciate the attention she is getting after DD2 was similarly showered with attention. (Gotta love the way kids equate attention with how much they are loved at the moment...especially when they are small)...although, school is a huge pull for a 6 year old...I hope she recovers quickly...and I bet you don't even get it at all!...sending a blessing your way so you don't...lol Soooooo been there/done that!

Lol, Julie...well, that's one way for a mom to get her darling daughter to quit biting her nails! At least your treatment included a trip to Disney! All I remember was a "hot sauce" treatment...didn't work 'cause I found out (as did my mom) that I loved hot sauce!

PS...I did stop biting my nails a year later when I fell in love with the handsomest boy in 4th grade!

I have 4 kids and it's (HFMD) gone through 3 of them over the last 2 weeks. Started out pretty easy with the baby. Nothing in her mouth, Thank God! Next one was a little worse with the blisters in her mouth (painful) and hands and feet. The third has just started with it in his mouth and feet. Been giving Advil for the pain, but no one has had a fever with it. I'm guessing that even with disinfecting everything in the house, that my 4th is going to get it, too. Hopefully NOT! My neighbor works at a daycare and says it's been going around like crazy over the past few weeks. I just want to get rid of all the ickies before we leave in 13 days!

Both of the girls are better now, and my throat is still a little raw but I think that is possibly allergies because my nose has been really stuffy latley.

DD6 goes to school tomorrow and she is so excited!! So am I.. :rotfl2:

So all is well for right now....and I hope since school will be in they don't pick up some other nasty something anytime soon. :guilty:
