I got a call from somebody who won something on my ebay auction and she relayed something very interesting to me.
First...some background. She bought this item and I admit I was late in getting it out to her, but she knew it was due to an illness. So, I send it and let her know. Well, about 4 days later she sends me a very nasty email saying she hadn't recieved them (videos) that she contacted ebay and told them I was ripping her off (like I'm going to steal her $12. ) and if she does not recieve them in the next 2 days she was going to pursue legal action against me. I wrote her back and said they were in the hands of the post office so there's nothing I could do. She then calls me yesterday and tells me they still have not been received and if she doesn't have them by Thursday then "something" needs to be done.
So.......she calls me today to tell me that the PO delivered them to her last night. Apparantly they searched the package! So it had been opened and gone through. She said the PO can do that anytime they want and that's what the delay was.
So I had such gratification that she made herself look like such an as..um, horses behind! Of course she said she would leave me positive feedback.

Interesting thugh about the PO searching packages. I didn't know they could do that, did you???

I didn't know the PO would do that. I guess if they felt it was suspicious or something they would. I can just imagine them looking in some of the "exchange" packages and wondering why someone was shipping an assortment of items beginning with the same letter:)

I thought they had to notify you if your package was searched. I know sometime customs does that, but to just open your box...I wasn't sure they could do that. Maybe it got torn in shipping and they had to repackage it...
I would call the PO to get the real answers.

The PO can and does do that. Most of the time it just means a delay in shipping but I'd spend the extra $ and insure anything of value. We have had some isolated problems with an urban PO opening envelopes and taking cash out. The envelopes that seem to get flagged are the musical ones that you might send someone for a birthday and put $10 or so in it. Videos may have been opened to check for child porn.

The Post office has always been allowed to open any package the deem suspisious (i.e. packages that rattle, smell funny etc). Since 911 they are now extra careful with anything they feel is out of the ordinary.
