Well, US Isn't for us!

So I was browsing the other forums and found a thread intitled: "We tried the Stratagies but Disney is NOT the vacation for us!" at:
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2164375 I just found it a little humorous to see a thread almost like this one but about Disneyworld instead. People posting there seem to be as defensive as we are here.

I can understand how you would feel this way w/ younger kids. universal does have play areas and some kids rids but there are more scary or intense rides than disney. I took a 3 year old to universal and we just did suess landing, barney -if you go in the morning before the first show you can usually have the play area to yourself, animal show, and some other play areas. tried to do shrek but was crying in the holding preshow room..tried to do et but was also crying in the dark areas before the ride.

I think that a lot depends on the kid and what you expect going in. I personally didn't know what to expect so I was totally thrilled when I finally went to Universal. I loved it all; the theming, the attractions, just being there. Of course, I'm an adult and not easily frightened.

My son (12 at the time) had talked me into going and had been working on me for a few years. I think that he could have handled most of it at a younger age (even though The Mummy did startle him a bit) Some kids take a lot of this in stride and of course many aren't quite ready yet.

I do think that IOA is probably best for many younger kids.

Really? With a new name? Wow, that... sounds like Universal Studios, all right.
Oh look...Meg has come over to the darkside...Hey...good to see you Meg. Yeah...Disney rehabs their stuff too so don't act like they never have. And again...good to see you Meg!

Umm...didn't they rename an entire park?:lmao:

Like they did with Alien Encounter, Magic Journeys and Capt. Eo? (just to name a few) ;)

Disney needs to rename DCA while they're at it, it has such a bad reputation now

Yeah but in a positive way.I have seen that board get real ugly!!
Its good to see this!!:thumbsup2

**Sigh**

We are just back from the Portofino, and I have been occasionally scanning the boards waiting for a post from some couple we met on the boat ride from the PBH to the parks, and I was sure this was going to be it.

Granted, a rude, oblivious person walked right in front of the wife when she was trying to take a picture of the hotel. But that hardly merited a distress call to her husband whom she promptly hugged and asked, "Can we just go home now?" They had just come from Disney, where apparently, everyone is polite, no one walks in front of you when you take a pic, and everyone keeps to the right. And Universal was just ... too ... much ... for her, and she hadn't even been to the parks yet.

I thought **for sure** this post was from the distressed "I've just come from Disney and I don't want to be at Universal" chick at the Portofino Boat Dock. Dang!

Actually, it sounds more like Disney than Universal.

Here's some examples of attractions that had name changes only. Nothing else changed except the name:
Countdown to Extinction = Dinosaur
Safari Village = Discovery Island
King Stefan's Banquet Hall = Cinderella's Royal Table
Epcot Center = Epcot '94 = Epcot
Disney-MGM Studios = Disney's Hollywood Studios

These had some slight rethemeing, but are basically the same attractions:
Mickey's Birthdayland = Mickey's Starland = Mickey's Toontown Fair
Universe of Energy = Ellen's Energy Adventure

There may be more, but that's all I can think of right now.

I hope she managed to survive her sidetrip to Universal.

Poor thing.

We were at both USF and IOA today with our free Superbowl tickets. :goodvibes We stayed on-site at RPH which i HIGHLY recommend. Although we probably didn't need FOTL because the parks were dead! Note to all of you out there - if you can go on Mothers Day - do it! No lines!

We took our 6 year old son and 3 year old (40 inch tall) daughter. She would have ridden every ride if they would have allowed her to, she especially was upset about not being permitted on the Hulk and argued with the attendant that she was, in fact, tall enough. I digress. I love Universal, let me start with that. Always have. But I can't see buying annual passes there. A day or two every few years will be enough for us I think. What is it about Disney rides that entices people to go back and ride again and again? And yes, I even mean Small World!

Maybe its because I am a DVC owner and we have small kids? I've been spoiled by bigger rooms and pool slides. But was enticed myself by the comfy beds and luxury at Loews.

My son - who is rough and tumble - hated the Mummy! MY SON! I don't get it. We'll go again in a few years but Universal is not a place I could go over and over.

With that said, I think Citywalk BLOWS Downtown Disney out of the water, no comparison. I could do Citywalk every night. And the system of getting FOTL access by staying on site, genius. I will never do Universal any other way. Disney needs to catch on there.

We go to both resorts and ride everything over and over. We split our week evenly between the two. To each their own.

I admit that I did get a little burned out by Disney for a few years. I needed a break from that and now it's fun again. I haven't reached that point at Universal yet but probably will someday.

We too have an autistic child who is non verbal.

Over the years we have loved Universal Studios but on this years trip slightly less so.
Our son is a really early riser each morning so we always get to the parks early, which suits us.

Islands Of Adventure we really enjoyed, mainly because for the first time we rode Spiderman and Jurassic Park as a family - Joshua had never done either before but Universal Studios we enjoyed less.
Sure he went on ET and Woody a couple of times, he wouldn't understand Men In Black so we skipped that, but my problem with US is the opening times of some of the rides - bearing in mind it was Easter.
We know Woody doesn't open till 10, but when it's getting on for 1030 and Barney, Jaws and Disaster are still not open it takes a lot away from our enjoyment - even the Woody store was only due to open at 11.
I can't remember which day it was specifically. Over the years it seems to be , from our observations, that they open Barney whenever they feel like it (apologies if that is harsh), just appears from what we have seen it never opens on time.
If you take away Jaws, Barney, Curious George, Woody, Disaster none of which open before 10 then you don't have a lot left in those areas of the park. We were unsure about the Simpsons for Joshua so didn't ride it and as I say he wouldn't understand the concept of MIB.

I understand ALL the parks have similar situations, and I am sure there are good reasons for it - however, personally if the park opens at 9 then all the attractions should open then too.
Trying to explain that to a non verbal disabled child isn't easy.

Also whilst the car parking is excellent, much prefer the multi storey to the WDW parks, Universal need to look at the security checking area for people's bags when entering the park.
On 2 occasions we left the park just before 12 noon, having had 3 hours around IOA - I had to manually move the barriers at the exit because we couldn't get past the bag security check - you know they put tables there etc - there was no way we could get past and get to the car parks. I shouldn't have to move a barrier to be able to leave the park!

Just to add we are from England in the UK and have been to Florida many times - we don't see it as Universal V. Disney , the more attractions available the better, we have had fun at all the parks over the years.
Remember Josh doing his first dance ever inside the Barney shop when he was aged about 2, so we have many good memories from Universal.
Next year we will be back again hopefully, looking forward to Harry Potter. :thumbsup2

We went to US on Saturday and I guess I expected more after going to WDW so many times. Everything seemed to be a ride simulator type ride and just wasn't fun. Jaws was okay, but scared the bejeezus out of DS.
He wanted to leave by 2pm. I'm so glad I didn't pay full price for the tickets!! Maybe we should have done IOA. :confused3
most of the disney peeps i see posting on DISboard are consummate planners who tend to research & plan their trips in excrutiating detail (which is what usually trips them up;)...park experience is never static or fixed, need to go with the flow and appreciate the unplanned events/take time to stop & smell the roses).

FYI, aside from this board, there are many books out available for research re U (UG has touring plans as does passporter's & kelly monaghan's one solely re U is a lifeline for 1st time visitiors). Sorry u weren't prepared as to what to expect.:confused3

I do applaud parents of special needs children for allowing their children to have magical experiences in the parks, can't presume to understand all the logistics involved:goodvibes

re staggered openings of parks, i know that Disney California uses this strategy...was so shocked when waiting in line for Toy Story to open they didn't have nearby snack carts open to provide water:rolleyes1, courting disaster imo.

wouldn't surprise me to see more cost cutting measures across the board (especially in non-peak seasons), including staggered openings, show closings.
