well this isn't good

Yikes. I'm wishing you good luck. Most illnesses clear in a few days so you might just be fine.

Hopefully the antibiotics will nip it before it ruins the whole trip! My dad had the worst flu I've ever seen about 2 days before our trip to Mexico this year, and about 2 days into the trip he was fine, thank GOODNESS for antibiotics!!! I don't know if you guys have this in the states, but in Canada we have Cold FX and Airborne...it's something you take to boost your immune system to fight off a possible virus/bacteria before it gets bad. Its worked wonders for us several times!!! Good luuuuuck!

We have 3 days until we leave for the Poly and both my husband and my son are sick. They have both started antibiotic, but they are feeling horrible. I am so hoping that the rest of us do not get it. My hubby never gets sick, it really sucks that he is sick now. just needed to vent a little.

Since OP did not state what the illness is (viral, bacterial, etc.) nor the antibiotic name, I would be careful to recommend any other remedies whether natural or drugs. Sometimes they interact with some antibiotics and reduce their effectiveness. If I'm not sure about something like this, I call our pharmacy and ask - we have a great local pharmacy and it's easier to get in touch with them than the doctor's office. Plus, the pharmacist can quickly look up the antibiotic they are on.

Usually it isn't a big deal but I have been on antibiotics that you can't take Vit. C or others that you can't have milk products, others can't have minerals within 2 hours of the drug, etc. It's best to check.

If something "extra" reduces the effectiveness of the antibiotic, it will take longer for them to improve.

Hope they feel better quickly.

we leave Friday and had puking daughter last nite, seems to be ok today, good luck to you

Sending lots of wishes your way!

The antibiotics usually kick in 24 - 48 hours from first dose. Some antibiotics are different, and I agree with the poster that said to always double check with your pharmacy BEFORE taking anything in addition to your antibiotics.

My fiance is close to finished with pharmacy school and has worked in a retail pharmacy for 5 years, so he is always super careful and always triple checks my medicines.

You never know what could affect a medicine so it is better safe than sorry, one phone call is much better than making yourself sicker!

I also teach, so I am around germs ALL the time!! Disinfecting wipes are super important!! You didn't say exactly how sick, but if they are contagious makes sure to disinfect things that are commonly shared. I am sure as a mom you already know this, but just an "obvious" reminder :)

And if you don't already, I would also take disinfecting wipes to Disney and lots of hand sanitizer. When your body is fighting off one thing, it is easy to pick up a 2nd sickness because your immune system becomes worn down.

Hope they all feel better and the rest of you don't get it! Try airborne! I know a lot of people say it doesn't really work, but it has always worked for me, even if it is all in my mind!:grouphug:

Before a trip to Disney Land my Mom got Pneumonia 10 days before we left.

She was tired and a little slugish during the first few days.

That reminds me of an old golf joke.

Punchline:
"Tee off, drag George."

Drink lots of fluids, chicken noodle soup, tea, whatever you have to do to get those fluids in. Even if you have to give you son lots of Ginger ale, 7-up, mountain dew, whatever...if it gets him drinking, do it.

Give the antibiotics 48 hours. Usually, people start to feel better after 2 days of meds. They should start to feel better before you go. And if they need a break in the afternoon, give them a break. They may still feel a little yucky, but a mid-afternoon break should make a difference.

the antibx should kick in plenty by then.
Lots of handwashiing!

In case they end up with antibx-induced diarrhea, grab yogurt and get it into their systems now. :)

We had a trip a few years ago, where every single member of our family got sick, one after another. My ds, dd and dh all got a stomach virus. I had an eye infection that required FOUR different types of medicine for a week to clear up. My father fell, and had to be taken to the ER (he was fine). Believe it or not, we still had a great time that trip. We went to the parks when people were feeling up to it and relaxed at other times. It wasn't ideal, but it wasn't a total washout either.

Sending lots of good wishes and pixie dust that your family gets better soon!

DW has worked in pharmacies for 15+ years, and her advice is first and foremost to look at the prescription bottle to make sure that it doesn't have a sunlight warning. She said there aren't many antibiotics that have that warning, but she said if it does to make sure they wear sunscreen. For stronger antibiotics like augmentin or any of it's generics try to eat yogurt with active culture, Activia is the best. She also said to contact your physician to see if they can prescribe an antibiotic for other family members in case they get sick during the trip. I went to the doctor before our trip a couple of weeks ago because I couldn't tell if I had a bad cold, the flu or just really bad allergies. My doctor prescribed an antibiotic for me to take on our trip just in case. Didn't need it, but was glad to have it just in case. From other travels I can say nothing worse than getting sick away from your normal doctor and not knowing where to go or hunting a pharmacy to fill a prescription. Good luck and prayers for your family.

thanks to all of you for all you ideas. They seem a little better, both had sinus infections (weird i know). Now we have had to push our departure time back a few hours. My aunt passed away this morning. Her funeral is planned for 1 pm Friday. We were susposed to leave at 8 am. Just could not leave and not be with family at this time. we are still leaving friday, but just alot later.
