I was just informed that as of next week I have to take a 20% pay cut:sad2: Instead of working 5 days a week I've been cut back to 4. Thankfully, we've never over extended ourselves, but now after 13 years in the same place I need to look for part-time work to supplement what I'm making or look for a new job. This really stinks:headache:

I'm so sorry! I feel your pain. The economy hit my employer and they hit me.. right out the door. Oh well, if the economy hadn't done it, I think we were on a self-destruct pathway. The for sale sign would have come out or we would have shut down. Just work your connections, and I'm sure you'll find something pretty quickly!

I'm so sorry this is happening to you. The economy relocated dh's job from California to Kansas. Fortunately for us, he was one of a few that were offered a relocation package. Everyone else was laid off.

Hang in there. I hope things pick up for you very soon!:grouphug:

It is so stressful to lose something that had longevity. I hope that there is something you can find to help out. This time of year, do you know taxes to work with an agency? Is there a trade that you do that would help.

Maybe create an errand day for seniors to take them to the supermarket, they pay the service amount.

Somethimes this is the time for kids if 16 to find something a few days a week just for their cell phone, and extras they love to have.

Find the laid off thread, there are a lot if us with reduced hours,
Di

Thanks for the support everyone:)

I know there are others out there much worse off than us and I'm glad DH and I still have jobs. Luckily the only debt we have is our mortgage and that's reasonable. While we keep to a pretty tight budget anyway, we'll just have to cut out more where we can. I already plan to go over the cell phone and cable bills this weekend to see what we can cut. We don't have a landline so that's one less bill to worry about. Car insurance is paid through July 2010 (just made the last quarterly payment last week). We'll just cut out all eating out/entertainment and I'll have to get the grocery bill down. We really tightened our belts in the last year so we do have savings to fall back on if necessary, I just hate to use it if I don't have to.

I am sorry to hear about the pay cut. I feel your pain - our business (that DH and I both in) has all but dried up and we have close to zero income right now and we haven't been able to find work otherwise. Scary situation, especially since we have 3 school aged children.

I've been doing more than my fair share of bellyaching but all that changed the day after the Haiti quake. Suddenly, my situation doesn't seem nearly as bad - I have health, food, shelter, my family etc. etc

If you are interested in finding ways to lower your expenses, there are plenty of tips and tricks available on the internet. One of my favorite sites is The Dollar Stretcher (www.stretcher.com) - check it out, you might find something useful

I am sorry to hear about your employment. I wish you lots of luck in finding what you need.

DH's job was eliminated last April. Times have been very tough. Our county has the highest unemployment rate of the state. Job hunting has been hard.

I am working part time.

Again, good luck, and know you are not alone.

I feel your pain. My employer never told us we would have to take up to ten furlough days this year.....we read about it in the newspaper!

I am sorry that you were cut back. It is happening to so many people that it really is scary. That happened to my brother but he should be OK as long as he learns to cut back.

We took a cut of 10% last year. It was restored this year now that the company is doing better. We also laid off about 20% of staff. I was glad to just take a paycut.

I am sorry this happened to you! My DH lost his job 10 days after we found out I was pregnant, so I feel your pain. We thought we were safe;)

On a bright note, you are luck that your pay was cut along with your hours...a lot of people are still working 40 hour weeks for less pay. At least you have the option of finding something that extra day, or saving the commuting/lunch/dry cleaning costs!

Look on the bright side they did not lay you off and when the economy gets better for your company they will put you back on 5 days and your full pay will be back.

Good luck

OP:
SOrry to hear about the loss of hours, thus loss of income. Thankfully they did not just lay you off, though it is so difficult to deal with the reduction as well!

I am self employed, just reviewed all and I am literally Down over 40% from last year. I knew it was bad, but I really did not think it was THAT bad, till it was all scrutinized. Accounts lost outright, others dwindled....My dh got notified he will likely be losing a good 20% of his income due to cutbacks and no OT so, we'll continue to do what we do....watching where the $$ is really going and being conscious of the impact on the household. The rate for unemployment is 0ver 10% without even adding in those that ARE working.... like in part time jobs JUST to make their bills, it is a VERY scary time in our history. :sad2:

Just want to wish you the very best of luck. HANG in there, it WILL get better....you have your family, and your health and all of us here on the DIS to commiserate with! ;)
To anyone thats lost a job, been reduced in pay etc....Best Of LUCK!!!:wizard:

I'm sorry they cut your hours. This happened to me at the beginning of the month. I feel very lucky because I was the last person at work to have to cut back. I have worked at my job since 1992, almost my entire adult life. I understand how you feel.
Good Luck and I hope business picks up for both of our work places, and soon!

My DH was cut from 40 to 30 last April. He also lost disability, life, comprehensive dental and comprehensive vision insurance. He's worked for the company since 1986, and we see no possibility of full-time ever returning. Layoffs again this week.

But be thankful you weren't entirely laid off.
And use that extra day to its fullest!
