My hubby just called from work and said "well you're answering the phone... that's a good sign" uh ok... color me confused lol why wouldn't I answer the phone?

Apparently a (yet to be confirmed but highly suspected) tornado just went through the area... it apparently started less than two miles from my home :scared1: the worst part is... I had NO idea anything was going on. we got a ton of rain and it was a bit windy but nothing I found concerning at the time.

it just really freaks me out that one was that close and I had no idea. this just confirms my fear. I'm scared of storms because I'm scared of tornado's developing and taking out our house and not even know it was coming. that terrifies me. I dreamt of tornado's all night.

We've got another big storm that's just about here so I may corral the kid and the dogs and run to the basement just to be safe

I'm scared of tornados and hubby isn't home to talk me down :sad2:

Scary--but really 2 miles away is a LONG way away for a tornado. I am surprised that your sirens didn't sound though.

OMG that is so scary :scared1: Good luck and will keep my fingers crossed for you. The tornados and everything going on is so devasting and scary.

yeah I know that's what my hubby told me too lol 2 miles is a long way... for a tornado.

But that's nonsense logic talk lol and there is no place for logic in fear :lmao: (that's what I tell him when I can't be talked down lol)

I don't even know if we have sirens close enough that we would be able to hear them where we are. I think it was also quite unexpected but I don't know all the details. hubby didn't want to give me too many because he knows I would go crazy thinking about the sudden-ness of it all lol. more than sirens I'm surprised my dogs weren't acting strange. they don't really like storms. but I guess they are too busy pouting about the rain lol

So far I haven't run us all into the basement yet lol.

2 miles away is close enough for me to take cover in the basement. Glad you're safe!

Turn on a radio and have it loud enough you can hear it all over the house. I can't hear our sirens when I am in our house but I have weather pop-up on my computer and phone that alert me if needed. If something happens at night, especially if DH is out of town, we are in sad shape because I can't hear anything, including a weather radio (I have 70% hearing loss).

thanks everyone... now the sun is tryign to come out between the clouds lol. I think this is the calm before the storm because they say at 10 we are supposed to get a really big storm.

I've always been afraid of tornados lol since I was a kid. I remember herding my family into the basement every time we got a bad storm as a kid lol. I would run to my moms room everytime there was a storm and then one day we decided to move my bedroom to the basement and I never ran to my moms room during a storm again... cause I was already in the safe zone hahaha.

Even now at almost 30 years of age, if there is a storm during the night my hubby will wake up to make sure I'm OK :lmao: I'm a big pansy I know. maybe I just need to move our room to the basement or build an underground house lol

YIKES!! That must mean it's headed our way now ... guess I'll be glued to the windows and tv news for a while ...

Weather radios are your friend! Mine is set to pick up alerts in my county and the counties next to mine. There is no way for me to miss an alert if I am in my home. They are cheap and easy to get. To me, they are almost as important as smoke detectors!

Sparks19, did a tornado actually touch down? What area do you live in? I have a lot of family that lives in Lanc Co. In Lititz, Manheim, Ephrata, Hempfield area, Lanc City, Reamstown, Bart, really all over the county. I guess I need to get on the phone to make sure everyone is all right.

Yep. I got mine from Radio Shack.

Now I do admit that I initially got it because we are boaters and when you are out on the lake you need to know the weather if it gets icky looking out. Tablerock Lake in Branson sits among the bluffs and you cannot see any distance at all.

If you wait until it is above you, then you are too late. You are driving back in a storm on the water which is not good.;)

Sparks it looks like you're in the all clear now - it headed our way & we got hit around 11am. Our county (Northampton) was under a tornado warning from 11-11:30. It headed east from here, into NJ. The local news is stating they have a confirmed tornado 9 miles west of Easton which is right over the NJ border. About 15 miles from here. A friend of mine between myself & Easton had 2 trees uprooted, she swears the tornado went through her property. It was a CRAZY storm. No property damage here but we did lose a nest of baby bunnies. It was too late til I ran out to see if I could shelter the nest, it was completely gone...:sad1:

We have no sirens around here that would warn us, but I had the local weather station on all morning so I knew it was coming.

I was at the orthodontist watching the news in the waiting room and they did say a tornado warning was in effect for Lancaster, PA! As well as near Myrtle Beach!

ETA - the original post was before I saw the news. It was about 10am maybe...Hope everyone is ok!

They still haven't confirmed if one did touch down or not yet but it's really all over the whole area.

I just found this article with a lot of info about damage in different areas around here

I hope your loved ones are all safe and sound.

Thanks! You too. I was watching the live stream of WGAL at noon. It looks like a tornado hit Lebanon Co(near Palmyra). They are saying $1 million worth of damage. And that is just a drop in the bucket when compared to what happened in AL, MS and GA. I hope these storms are over soon and we all have a mild May.

We had some really bad storms last Friday night with an F4 tornado that ripped through and completely destroyed several neighbohoods and did some considerable damage to our airport. We had no loss of life and no serious injuries. (nothing short of a miracle!)
I certainly pray for all of the victims of the storms in the south and out east. But I was wondering how the people in our communities were lucky enough to be spared injury and death, when the communities in the south were not so lucky. After reading this thread, I wonder if maybe it's the difference in warning systems. In our area, sirens and warnings were going off like mad for about an hour before the storms got here. I was actually getting really frustrated because we were just trying to get DD to bed at the time. After seeing some of the devastation and hearing that we had no casualties, I was quite thankful for all of those sirens and warnings! :thumbsup2

Radio Shack carries them. A lot of the big grocery store chains carry them. I got mine at a Publix here in Florida. I got one in Missouri at Price Chopper. The run about $20.
