Welcome Dame Doris to the DIS TEAM!! =0)

Just have to add my two cents in - I too don't find it very appropriate for this board. What I read on that site was school-yard behavior which I so happily thought I had seen the end of after Middle School.

Disney is the happiest place on Earth and a big reason (among many I know)for that is everyone is treated with respect. How many other places in this world where, regardless of your race, religion, weight, or clothes-sense, can you go and be exactly who you are and bring out the kid inside you. Who cares if you wear loud patterned clothes or an out of fashion shirt - maybe your mother wouldn't let you as a kid LOL I dunno or if someone thinks you look like a dork because of your hat choices princess: (that WILL be me next week and if I see my mug on that website watch out )

Anyway - just my 2 - it is not meant to offend anyone - I was just taken aback to see this link on the greatest WDW info site on the Internet! :wizard:

Okay, let's all take a deep breath...

You don't need to start any other threads, or polls, or email campaigns to voice your displeasure. I think anyone who wants to gauge the success of Dame Doris need only take a look at this thread.

I don't know the background or who the author is, but Dame Doris was CLEARLY intended to be funny and tongue-in-cheek, not hateful and mean.

But all the outrage and mob mentality (I can hear "kill the beast!!!" in my head!) seems a little out of proportion to the problem.

Someone published a humorous piece with only good intentions, and the posters have spoken and said that they don't find it funny.

I'm sure the message has been received, and now we can all move on to planning that next magical trip to The World! :earsgirl:

alright first off I have to ask what is wrong with the idea of a poll , email campaign or any other of the mentioned ideas of getting the point across until some reply is heard one way or the other??

and secondly where is the so called humor that was intended in the original article? oh lets see humor in making fun of others? humor in embarrassing someone else?? orrrr does the person just have to do this to feel good about themselves?

as for "all the outrage and mob mentality" I would say that is called Democracy .. and hey guess what... mob mentality such as this is what happened to have led to one group of people...forming an entirely new country ... called the United States ( no offense out there to any one from other countries it was just the first comparison I could come up with)...

sooo tell Me what were the " good intentions" of the article? and how do we know the message was received...

waits to see how long until this is deleted...

Webmaster Kathy, thank you for responding. I have to disagree, however, that it was "clearly intended to be funny . . . " and that the complaints are "out of proportion to the problem". If it had clearly been funny only, then I don't think so many people would have complained. Further, the site had the real potential of hurting people's feelings, and specifically asked people to join in on hurting people's feelings by submitting people's pictures without their permission. I also think the issue was advanced when members, such as myself, felt that posts were being deleted that complained and no explanation was given.

Thank you again for your response and I hope a new and kinder way for her to provide her comedy will arise.

I welcome Doris with open arms. Our field of vision was assulted by some fashion offenders on our past trip!
If you find the article in poor taste, then simply don't read it. It's not well written, but does it really call for extreamly witty journalism? It's silly and entertaining. I have no idea why people are taking such offence!

I never thought I'd see the day when such utter trash would be included in an official DIS newsletter. What kind of shallow creature judges another human being by the clothes that they wear? That man in the photo could be the firefighter who risks his life to save others. The woman who is so cruelly & superciliously labeled a "barrel" could be the emergency room nurse who holds the hand of a dying patient. OR they could be you & me. The thing that sets the DIS apart is a genuine bond of camaraderie & goodwill - something Dame Doris clearly cannot comprehend. Get rid of her!!! Her comments are infinitely more tasteless than any of the outfits shown. Please don't try to pass this off as sarcasm either - sarcasm requires irony and there is none here. To those who said "lighten up" - that has been the cry of bullies throughout history. No we won't lighten up because it's wrong!!! Laughing at someone else's expense is NEVER funny and it certainly isn't very 'Disney'.

Wow! Very well put.

I think feedback like this, which really is positive feedback if you look at it, people taking the time to express how they feel about a subject of a website that is near and dear to their hearts, is really invaluable to Pete and those he works with. I think it gives him/them a keen insight to the inner feelings and attitudes that make this website, The DIS, such a special place to so many. I truly do feel that Pete will take the feedback to heart.

Here Hear Mickey's Sister, I love all that you posted but wanted to highlight this sentiment most especially...

"laughing at someone's else's expense" like I stated earlier in the day, not in my world, no, I must stand up, no matter how unpopular it is, and for anyone to imply that this is "mob mentality" liken it to "kill the Beast" than the point we're trying to express has been lost.

Mean Girls and bullying is alive and well in this country. I cannot sit by and be silent.

I can't say it any better myself. Hey, I thought "roll out the barrel" or whatever had a nice caboose :confused3. But what do I know?, I'm no "fashionista".

Time for a re-assessment, DIS.

How fast would something like this have disappeared if one of us had posted it :confused3 ?I cannot believe that this was allowed.
Maybe Dame Doris is so uncomfortable with herself that she has to make fun of people to try and make herself feel better  .

First, people wanted to express their opinions and get feedback that what they were saying was, at the very least, being taken into consideration, and we heard nothing until your post, Kathy. And then, it was to berate people for their opinions. I don't think anyone set out to create a MEAN character...but it obviously IS, and has obviously been received that way by the majority of people on the DIS. What more do the Webmasters need to know??

Second, I don't think that people are going to (or should) stop expressing their opinion until appropriate action is taken. Unless of course, we get the "Pete's board, Pete's rules, and they're not to be discussed" response, along with further deleting of posts, locked threads, and/or bannings. And then...well, what can we do. The ones with the power "win" in the end, right?

Third, it is NOT a matter of hitting the back button or not reading the Dame Doris columns. Heck, I'd want to know if my fat ***, in fat *** clothes, "inspired" Dame Doris to post my picture with humiliating comments. And I've met plenty of DISers who might recognize me, and said fat ***.

And it doesn't have to be just about "me" for me to object. Other people are potentially subject to the same humiliation, and I feel for them...for everyone who has seen this, knows that it exists, and knows that they could end up the subject of this "humor".

I don't think we're necessarily owed an explanation of anything...WHO Dame Doris is, what anyone was thinking when she was created, or why she's disappearing. I think Dame Doris can quietly disappear until and if "she" can be re-created into some sort of nicer, Disney-like, persona.

I do believe she is the wrong pronoun...I believe Dame Doris is kin to Dame Edna

Nice post, Mare.

I agree with you. I think what bothers me most is the ATTITUDE that it's OK to publically make fun of people for what they wear.

Look, when I go to WDW, I am going to a THEME PARK. I am NOT going to a FASHION SHOW. I happen to know the difference between the two.

This is an incredibly sensitive post that I think everyone needs to heed. I think this whole Dame Doris idea is a big stinker and I hope it gets smooshed soon.

Well said! :flower3:

Just adding my voice in... I did cringe reading the Dame Doris text as I imagined the next set of pics would include "Why does she think she can squeeze into that?" or "Does he think that hawaiian shirts hides the belly?"
I am not in charge so I can't say what stays or goes... but I can decide what I will and will not click on...

and to Dame Doris "herself", I appreciate anyone who attempts to make others laugh and I am sure you are good at it, just don't go for the cheap jokes next time. The funniest jokes are the ones everyone can laugh with IMO! :goodvibes

Berate?

Please read it again, Mare. I was merely trying to get people to stop and try to get a little perspective.

Again, it was clearly intended to be humorous. Did it miss that mark? The majority says that it did.

But we've got a real angry piling-on happening here in response to that, and I don't think that's warranted. A simple "Not funny, that could hurt feelings" would have gotten the point across.

In the end, realize that this fictional character was created by a person, and intended to entertain. Not by a mean person, and not intended to embarrass or shame anyone.

The attacks on the Dame Doris character are bleeding over to the author. I truly don't know who the author is, but I'm feeling he/she is bearing the brunt of many personal attacks here.

I think what we're seeing is that we have a huge melting pot here, and what may be funny to a cosmopolitan Manhattanite may not play well in Columbus, or what is the height of humor in Kansas City might make no sense or even be offensive to a San Franciscan.

Just please try to understand that Dame Doris was intended as humor and to bring a bit of irreverent fun to the newsletter, and now we all know that the majority has said she missed the mark.

Kathy, I think your "perspective" is clearly in the minority. There is no need to be an apologist for attacking or bullying behavior. It is NEVER funny to make fun of the way people look, and to post photos in a public forum is cruel. I wouldn't even attempt to speculate on the intent of Dame Doris--and it's not necessary to speculate on intent, because the website clearly speaks for itself.

Manhattan, Columbus, San Francisco, Kansas City--doesn't matter. Cruelty is cruelty. People have every right (and obligation!) to express their dismay and disgust. Dame Doris, whatever the intent, is making the World a meaner place.

Irreverent is fine. Making fun of unsuspecting strangers, especially denigrating their obesity (roll out the barrell) or region of residence (red neck drag) is not.

And I haven't seen any personal attacks on Doris. Only "Doris must go" comments. Which I happen to agree with.

As Flower said in "Bambi": If you can't say nothin' nice, don't say anything at all . . ."
