Just wanted to get your opinion on the Welcome Aboard Variety Show. What exactly is it? It is worth seeing? or would you recommend spending your first night onboard getting to know the ship?

Thanks in advance!!
:sunny:

Go.
We always enjoy that show. It gives you a sample of who will be perfprming on the ship that week. The comedians are always great. Especially Rich Purpura.

We went to ours and the ventriloquist was so funny we had tears streaming down our faces. We had a great time.

Definately go.....it is a nice start to the cruise. You would be surprised but by that night you will probably already know the lay of the ship. It is quite easy to navigate around.

I agree! We enjoyed both the Welcome Aboard and the Farewell shows on the Magic. I didn't expect much from these shows but ended up really glad that we took the time to go to them.

We vote yes also! We love all of the shows, love being in the theatre and we've not been disappointed in any of the shows. For sure go!!!

I wouldn't skip any show onboard.

RKB, are you referring to the female ventriloquist...I forget her name now. She had us in tears too. I've never laughed so hard.

I didn't make it to the show the first couple of days. Once I found them, we never missed another one. They are all great!

And on the 7 day cruises, there are family cabaret shows between the 1st and 2nd show. It's usually the performers from the variety shows and they are really good in a smaller audience.

We have two DDs 4 and 7 who I feel will love the clubs, thought the first night would be important to get used to them and meet some friends. Thought we would have them skip the welcome aboard show so that they can be in the club. Would have them skip dinner, but with out family, I think it is likely that we will be in Animators the first night and don't want them to miss that show. Would the kids love the show, or do you think that it's one they can miss?

There isn't really a show at Animator's...or rather, the restaurant itself is the "show". Out of all the restaurants, I wouldn't have the kids miss that dinner.

Some people think that the kids should be dropped off at Oceaneers right away to make friends and get acclimated etc. But most kids make friends quickly. I wouldn't worry about that at all.

The kids will love all the shows.

I would suggest NOT MISSING IT! It was the highlight of both of our last cruises. The comedian/magician and ventriloquist are hysterical. My sides hurt afterwards I laughed so hard. We liked them so much we went to see them at the adult cabaret shows and even the family shows the next night. Definitely worth seeing. (FYI -- Rich Purpura has been on HBO and Michael Harrison has been on Comedy Central)

Rich Purpura is not only doing shows onboard....we told this by a CM last Feb.....they couldn't come to terms on pay or something.

It is too bad because he was very, very funny....even though we had seen his routine three or four times onboard....he still made us laugh. He really did need to change his routine.....so many repeat cruisers...

Rich was performing on our cruise in April. He also appears in Las Vegas.

I don't remember this Rick guy or even if he was on our last cruise..however....

BEWARE..

I did not want to go to the opening variety show, I was very tired, needed to rest, DH insisted. I went in PO'd in the first place, then...I was picked out of what, 900 people to go up on stage and preform, live on stage, on The Magic, with Freddy Fusion and his wonderful Duck, Bill. I was NOT THRILLED IN THE LEAST.

One, I hate birds(sorry bird lovers, don't want them hurt, or killed or anything like that..just don't want them AROUND me),

Two, he(Freddy) sat BILL on my head....

My DH and DD were ROFLTAO, I was mortified!!!!

So, just beware and if FF is on our cruise in December...
GUESS WHO WON'T BE GOING........................

Rich Purpura IS still performing -- we just saw him on the 8/28 cruise. And just as funny as ever. Still made us laugh -- but you're right about his show. He needs to add some new material.

Costa Maya was wonderful.
It was an artificial Mexican village.
We chose to just spend the day there. The kids loved shopping for inexpensive stone chess sets and silver bangles. Shopping was more accessible than Cozumel and no more expensive for low end. High end selections (at Diamonds International, etc, was not up to snuff of the other ports, but they "opened" the stores just for us.
The pool was LOVELY and large. The adjacent beach has sharp rocks and signs said not for swimming although many did swim.
The Mexican dance show was surprisingly nice (Ballet Folklorico) with dances from Aztec human sacrifice ritual to modern dances for the various regions of Mexico. Beautiful costumes and talented dancers.
We had a great day there without any excursion.
I was told that the jungle ruin trip was not recommended for kids given the duration of the bus ride both ways. Also insect bite warnings on the navigator for the ruins.
Hope this helps.

I would have your kids have dinner with you as a family and then send them off to the clubs. A lot of the humor will fly right over their heads. On the other hand, Mickey and the Gang usually make a stop in the show.

To let the kids see the "live" preformer, go to the kids/family cabarette show that is betwen the dinner seatings (usually 7:45). It's geared to the kids and they will get more out of it.

Kahoutek22 -- I think you posted your response on the wrong thread. I posted a reply to your same posting on the Grand Cayman thread.

Phyllis, I've read this from you before, and it makes me so sad. As a performer, I know that the last thing that we want is for anyone to feel mortified or humiliated. Please know that even though people were laughing, no one was laughing AT you. If anyone else has this level of anxiety about being called on, please sit near the back of the theatre or make sure to let your loved ones know not to point to you to be volunteered. I'm sorry that this has become such a sore memory for you about your trip:(
