Hi all, Just back from a 10 day stay at POP. First of all, I want to say that I enjoy the resort and will stay there again. :earsgirl:
but something happened and I am still weirded out about it. the first day we were overwhelmed by ciggarette smoke in our bathroom. I called housekeeping and complained and the manager called me back and said they would look into it because our area was non-smoking rooms and if I had anymore problems with the smell, call back. ok, the next night it was back. and it was sickening. I call back and was told there was nothing they could do except come up and deodorize my room, or I could move. NO WAY! we were unpacked and was in a quite area 1st floor so I passed the offer and ran out and bought some freebreeze. all is ok now.
ok, day three we come in at 3pm and room is not made. we were tired so I just cleaned it up myself. no problem. I call housekeeping again and ask if my room can be made earlier in the day because we come in for an afternoon rest. the lady was downright snippy! she asks exactly what time do you want your room made? I say, I'm not picky. anytime between 9am and 1pm. she tells me, she needs an EXACT TIME. I detect a bit of sarcasm and say 12pm. all is fine after that.
ok, heres what thats been bothering me. day 4, we come in to a nice clean room. DD (age 23) is in the bathroom and screams MOM! (just me and DD on this trip) so thinking she saw a snake or something equally horrifying, she shows me a roll of toilet paper she just opened. it was a new roll the housekeeper left that day because we were almost out. anyway, when she unwrapped it, the roll was covered in feces!! (sp?) I almost threw up. it was the nastiest thing I have ever seen.
I call housekeeping. they said they would send us a new roll. (what?!!) 2 hours went by. nothing. I call the front desk and a manager came up to the room with two rolls and was just as weirded out as we were. I ask if there was a chance that it was brought in from another room someone didn't use. he said that he doubted it. that more than likely it came from the stock room. he apologized of course, but I can't keep from wondering how could the housekeeper have missed it.
anyway, just want to say this is very weird. I wonder if I should write Disney and complain about it?
oh, and btw, my DD ened up in the doctors office the next day with a severe sinus infection that the Doctor said was probably brought on by the ciggarette smoke. the last half of our trip she was sick and in bed. her prescriptions alone cost me almost $300.
I hope the smokers next door had a good time in spite of the fact my DD was sick as a dog not hardly able to walk, while they enjoyed their cancer sticks. anyways, next time your at POP, be VERY carefull when you unwrapp that new roll of toilet paper! and even if you request a non-smoking room (like I did) know that your neighbors can smoke and get away with it and it will get into your room and there is not a thing that the resort will do about it.

So sorry to hear about your bad experiences. We are leaving in 15 days for POP and have also requested a non smoking room. I just cant stand the smell of smoke!! I sure hope we dont have problems like that. And we will definately check the toilet paper before we unwrap it. Just GROSS :scared1: !! Sorry you had to deal with those things. Hope your daughter is feeling better. :flower:

You HAVE to write a letter to WDW and Pop to complain!!! That is entirely unacceptable. That is a terrible thing to have happen to you. I always request non-smoking for medical reasons (smoke allergy) and I have never had a problem. Maybe when you do that they put you as far away from smoking as possible. Although it sounds like you were in a non-smoking area and your neighbors were breaking the rules. So sorry that happened!

Thank you, DD is still sick, but is getting better. :) you know, her fever didn't break until after we got back home. it was THAT bad.
Good luck on getting a smoke free room, and smoke free neighbors. also I hope you have a wonderfull time at WDW. :earsgirl: Linda

DH and I stayed at POP on our Honeymoon and absolutely loved it! I would definately send a letter to WDW and POP...and probably send one straight to Al Weiss (Pres of WDW).

If something like that happens on our next trip either with smoking or the toilet paper I will march by butt to the front desk....Disney cast members are trained to end scenes immediately......I would send a copy of the prescriptions bill with the letter.

Hope your daughter is feeling better!

Can anyone steer me in the right direction as who to write to and an address?
I just can't stop thinking about the toilet paper incident if it was left there deliberatly since I complained about the smokers... I know its probably just a freak thing, but that along with spending half a day at the doctors with my DD so sick almost to the point of it being pneumonia makes me mad. it all started with the smoke and nothing was done to help us. we didn't break any rules, but yet we paid with our health. I personally didn't get sick, but the TP incident turned my stomach.
If my letter does anything, I hope and pray that it will get them to enforce the no-smoking rules to help prevent this from happening to anyone else that gets sick from second hand smoke.
BTW, the smoke smell was really THAT bad.

I am sorry about your daughter and the TP is really freaky, I would have wanted to talk to the GM about that, however the resort tried to do something about the smoke, they offered to move you.

Hope your daughter is OK....sad that she got sick on vacation.

I am also perplexed. Why would you ever stay there again if all of this happened? Why didn't you change rooms if the smoke was that bad?
Management tried to help you out....why didn't you accept their offer?

You know....I was kinda wondering if it wasn't housekeeping playing games because you had the 'audacity ' to ask them to clean your room earlier????

I really cant' see them getting uptight cause you complained against the smoke...since it probably wasn't them that did the smoking.....I hate to think they would 'retaliate' in such crude fashion, but YUCK

Glad DD is feeling better! Sorry you had to have such an experience.

That is probably the grossest thing I have heard in a long time.

I hope your daughter is alright, but imho Pop Century did try to do the right thing. If the smoke bothered me that much I would have moved. Other than that there was not much more they could have done.

On average Pop Century has a couple of thousand guests at any given time, if one family has a problem and the resort tries to correct it - it is up to that family to comply so the problem can be rectified.

Well, I have stayed at POP twice before and really like the resort. I still do. we had unpacked all of our clothes plus hair stuff, make up, etc.. (imagine two ladies staying 10 days) and I wasn't in the mood to pack up and move, and get settled again. plus I loved the room. it was 1st floor and I could see my car across the lot. also, after I bought some air freshener it helped by spraying down the bathroom with it. I'm a pretty easy going person. I tried to kill the smoke smell myself even after housekeeping deodorized my room twice. I grew up around smokers. I can tollerate it. my DD cannot. she isn't a big complainer either. she wouldn't have wanted to put me through the trouble of moving but I would have in a heartbeat if it would have kept her from getting so sick.
I counted 30 nights that we have spent at POP since last year. never have I ever had the slightest problem with that resort. I guess thats why I'm so weirded out at what happened. (toilet paper) I guess bad luck just followed us around that week. :umbrella:
I do not see this as management trying to help. (by moving us) if they really wanted to help me, they could have enforced their own rules by asking my neighbor NOT to smoke. I know they did what they could by the deodorizing and offering to move me somewhere else and they didn't want to offend my neighbor either. thats all nice on their part, but sometimes rules need to be enforced. don't trouble the victim or put her out, but go to the rule breaker and make them stop. or either kick them out, but don't make me suffer. its not fair.

Well, they already did that, if they put them in a non-smoking room. Maybe management knew that people who break the rules about smoking tend to break them whether the rules are presented in writing or in person (just a theory), and that the best way to get you away from smoke was to move you. I understand why you didn't want to go through the hassle, but really, they did try to make it right.

I agree that the toilet paper thing is very, very weird, and I only hope that it wasn't housekeeping getting malicious. That's one of those things that falls into the category of so freaky you hardly know what to say about it.

About the smoke issue - I don't imagine there's really all that much they can do about guests who sneak around and smoke in a non-smoking room. Maybe they did ask them to stop, but how could they possibly enforce that? Maybe someone who knows more about how hotels operate could speak to that issue. However, I do believe that they tried to help you by offering to move you to another room. I understand it would have been a hassle, but if it was making your daughter ill to stay there, surely it would have been worth the trouble. I believe in a case like that that bell services would even have helped you with your packing.

 That's horrible, sorry that happened to you.

Actually Disney did all they could do by offering to move the OP as there is no written policy about smoking in a NS room. It truly is a voluntary situation on the part of the guest. If they had a true NS policy the guests would be required to sign an agreement at check in; that they would not smoke in a NS unit and that they understand what the consquences of that would be. Since Disney does not have that policy they can't truly enforce it.

Also if the guest was smoking only in the bathroom unless they actually caught the guest in the process of smoking they could not prove it anyway.

I do agree that if smoke is a health issue to the point of making one sick, I would take the inconvenience of moving over becoming sick.

I HATE WHEN PEOPLE ARE SO RUDE AS TO SMOKE IN NON-SMOKING AREAS. AHHH.......I can't tell you how many non smoking rooms I have stayed in that smelled of smoke. Why don't you book a smoking room if you need to smoke? I have allergies and it kills me to have to smell it. I am so sorry your DD got sick!! It annoys me when others mess with your vacation.

The toilet paper thing is soooooooooo nasty. I would have had to speak to someone in charge right then. Maybe an unhappy employee put it in the stockroom to cause a stink for the hotel.

I hope the rest of your trip was better. :goodvibes

I wondered that too. Good thing it was housekeeping, not a waiter, eh?

I am not sticking up for anyone that smokes in a non-smoking room, but there are not that many smoking rooms. There are times that they give you non-smoking even when requesting smoking. My husband smokes, I don't. I hate when he smokes in the same room that I am in. I have requested smoking (when he comes with me) and have ended up in a non smoking room. What should a person do then? :confused3 He has smoked in the bathroom. If he stands outside the doorway it is even worse because then anyone walking past walks thru the smoke. The last time we stayed at Pop was Oct 1-4th requested smoking, got non-smoking. When I book a deluxe, I ask for smoking & since they have balconies, he will smoke there. When I book mod or value (no balconies) & request smoking & I have him smoke in the bathroom. Trust me, I understand what you are saying. My son has asthma & when he was younger, I couldn't have my husband in the house with a cig! My mom has lung cancer from the darn things. I hate it more than anything, so as I said, I am not sticking up for smokers that do it on purpose, but there are times that they end up in a non-smoking room & they do have as much right to a room preference as anyone else. Smoking is a nasty habbit & it is very addictive, so to give a smoker a non-smoking room and expect them not to smoke in it is not too swift :confused3 I don't have an answer as to what can be done. Should they make more rooms for smokers? Maybe.....
Again, I am not saying what happened to you was right, but there may have been a legit reason.... The smoker wants a smoking room & can't get it, you want a non-smoking room & get stuck with the smell.... It may have been better if you did move your room??? Your DD may not have gotten sick. I have had to move at Pop because the room I was in (for 3 days) I got bite up in at night. I thought it was bed bugs, I was told by front desk it could have been fleas. I am allergic to fleas... I had welts all over my legs. Fleas... I asked the front desk clerk with a puzzled look. She said yes could be from a previous guest with a service dog. Once she said that & offered to move me, I jumped on it. I packed everything up, they moved it for me. The remainder of my stay (4 more nights) were flea (or bed bug) free....

As far as the toilet paper thing, Yuk!!!!! That would have made me sick for the remainder of the trip. I would hate to think that housekeeping would do that on spite.... even moving your room wouldn't have solved that problem. That can get someone even more sick than the smell of smoke. That actually carries germs & whatnot in it....

I'm sorry to hear you had problems like that. OMG the TP incident is disgusting :crazy2: It sounds like maybe the housekeeping played a nasty trick on you out of spite for you calling them. I have heard stories like this but never at a WDW resort. As for the smoke problem, the same thing happened to us at POP last December, after several conversations with management they offered to move us, and we had to because DS and I are asthmatic and the smoke was killing us. We never complained but I wish we had! I hope Disney helps you out on this.
