Weird incident at the Poly

When we recently stayed at the Poly, we saw something I never expecetd at a Disney Resort: As we were approaching the elevator, there was a guy standing there. He looked to be in his early twenties. I could tell almost immediately something wasn't right with him. He was standing riight in front of the elevator doors blocking them. Since I couldn't get to the button, I asked, "down please?" He said "Goind to one or two?" (We were ON two!) His eyes were really red and almost rolled back in his head. My Dad thought he was blind (he wasn't. Well, maybe he couldn't see but it wasn't from a congenital impairment!) The elevator doors opened and there was a woman getting off. When she said, "excuse me," he took one step and fell flat on his face. At this time I noticed that his legs were completely covered in blood. My Dad went to help him, but another man came up and said, "Don't worry about it. Just leave him alone." I am still not sure if this was a CM or another guest. We got on the elevators and never saw him again. This guy was as wasted as I have ever seen anyone in my life. For a moment, I felt like I was in Vegas instead of Disney!!!

WOW!

As a nurse, are you sure he was drunk and had not be beaten or mugged?

I agree, you should have called someone! It sounds like he had been beaten, or maybe rectal bleeding? If you bled enough(rectally), it would run down your legs. Being wasted doesn't make you bleed. I think that man had other problems. I hope he is o.k. :sad2:

Oh no, I am sorry. He was bleeding because his knees were skinned up. The fall I witnessed was obviously not his first of the day. He didn't look beaten up because his face was not touched. Just his knees. My Dad did try to intervene (honestly, I just wanted to get my little girl away from him), but another man stepped in. This guy was either a CM or a guest who knew the man because he was very adamant that we not get involved. I promise I would have helped him if I thought he had been mugged or beaten. But, I assure you, he was just very, very intoxicated- almost scarily so.

Sorry if I seemed shocked...I was! Your post made me think that he was severly injured, not just scraped up knees. I would have been very nervous around him also. I guess there are people that think being intoxicated is part of the "fun" of being on vacation, even if they are vacationing in a family-friendly place like WDW! I hope the rest of your trip was fun and uneventful! :sunny:

Yes. The rest of our trip was very fun (wonderful, in fact!) and uneventful. I also forgot to mention that we didn't have to report it because several of the housekeeping staff members were right there when it happened. I was just talking with my husband about it and he reminded me the guy had a suitcase with him. He believes the gentleman who intervened was a CM who was escorting the drunken man out of the hotel.

Jeffrey Dahmer also adamantly requested the POLICE not get involved (when a male he had captive, escaped and ran into the street in a craze because he had drilled holes in his head and poured acid into them). The young man was incoherent, and Jeffrey ran outside, intervened and spoke a GOOD story. So well..the police returned the man to his custody. Jeffrey escorted the naked escapee inside, where he promptly killed him. I'm not inferring this is what occurred in this case (At least I HOPE not). Here's a link to the specific CASE and STORY. Be forewarned, it's VERY graphic. (http://www.rotten.com/library/bio/crime/serial-killers/jeffrey-dahmer/)

YET-- I would have definitely REPORTED this incident to SECURITY immediately (CM, GUEST, ETC...I do not care who is telling me NOT to intervene). SECURITY is the only office I would alert in such a circumstance. You would be surprised if I exposed some other alarming and frightening incidents which have occurred at WDW over the years. Just be cautious, and remember...anyone can gain access to any resort, etc. -- if truly determined. :confused3 They can easily "represent" anyone in a position of authority, staff member, etc. Predators are very adept in their game, and stay a few steps ahead (of what you would expect). In the news lately, was the horrible story of the young girl victimized by a sexual predator at WDW. The photos were taken while she was staying at the POR, (in the elevator, playground, etc). Here's a link to this story...http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,156508,00.html

Amazingly, either no one ever witnessed anything, or was lacking prudent/diligent judgement necessary to alert security when they "thought" something they came across seemed odd...or wrong. Presume nothing. If you come across something so FREAKY/WIERD (even in WDW) you have trouble understanding "WHAT" is going in...it should be REPORTED ASAP. Always...trust your instincts. 10,000 years of evolution rarely prove wrong! ;)

DF While the story of the little girl breaks my heart and just makes me ill, I am so glad you posted it. You really must be pro-active and go w/ your gut! The OP seems to have only been making a comment abt. running into a "wasted" guest ~ not very Disneyesque, I must admit ~ but I think it is wise to keep these other stories in mind. We need to all look out for one another :earsgirl: :earsboy:

Looking back on it now, you guys are right. I probably should have called security even though there were other members of the staff there. My gut instinct at the time was that this guy had just had a little too much "fun" on his vacation and needed to sober up in a not so public place. But, from reading the other stories, I can see how sometimes there is more than meets the eye. If I ever see anything like this again (Lordy, I hope not!), I will definately report it to security. Thanks for posting those stories. It can sometimes (falsely) feel like you are in such a safe, impenetrable, place when at Disney.

GMTA Dreamflight99, Jeffrey Dahmer came to mind as I was reading this.

Who knows what this was all about! I'm thinking more along the lines of a scene from Goodfellas or The Sopranos! :earseek: I'd hate to think that this guy was where he was because he needed help but couldn't ask for it himself for whatever the reason.

Hopefully it was nothing more than a guest who had one too many cocktails.

A person bleeding and acting weird is a terrible sight for kids to see no matter what the story behind it.
But... my son is a diabetic and acts drunk when his blood sugar is low. While not likely, the guy could have needed medical attention. He needed help getting to a safe place no matter what.
If your dad was trying to help him, why would some one stop him?

"Life...is stranger than fiction." The OP made another comment regarding the illusion of SAFETY one can experience while staying at WDW. It's very easy to FEEL this way about such a place. BUT, the sheer number of people visiting on any given day, lends to a veritable "Microcosm" of the World at large. Every type of person imaginable is in the park at any given time (rubbing shoulders with you and your family).

Therefore, it's always best to err on the side of caution and use the utmost "common sense" when dealing with ANY situation. Oddly enough, this is the trait/characteristic most often listed as "missing" when ever CM's or staff members mention the ONE THING guests visiting WDW forget to bring!! LOL.

I take nothing at "face value" (especially something as incredibly ODD as the scene the OP described), and would be compelled to intervene. I'm just one of those types of people. The predator is not always the monster we presume them to take the form of...most times, they are the WOLF---in the fluffy, friendly, kind and helpful---"SHEEP'S CLOTHING" (Ted Bundy, etc). The very thought...makes me shudder. Take care everyone, and STAY SAFE. :grouphug:
