Does anyone think it's sexist that hats are allowed for women, but not for men? My DF "needs" to wear a hat, and will not go to local restaurants that don't allow him to wear one.

Not really. It's a cultural norm in the US that men do not wear hats indoors unless their religion requires them to do so.

1) Absolutely not !
2) I know of no men that "need" to wear a hat (indoors) !

NOTE: Some men are ashamed about baldness - to them, I say buy a rug.

If there's a religious or medical reason that he needs to wear a hat, I am sure guest services will accommodate that special need with sensitivity.

OP, NO to sexist.

Why does your DF need to wear a hat inside a restaurant? That must limit you and DF to McD's and BK and Taco Bell for dining.

Sorry, no sympathy for men having to remove their hats. If it's a million degrees outside DH can take off his shirt in public but if I did it I'd be arrested (though in my case that would be more like a charge of vandalism than lewdness :rolleyes1) Errrr...not that either of us wants to do that anyway.

But I do feel an exception should be made for medical or religious reasons (the hats, not the nudity).

Of course it's sexist. although I agree that it's accepted practice for men to take their hat off in doors, anything that one sex is allowed to do but the other is not, is sexist...but that's different then what is acceptable. It's not normal for a man to wear a skirt, but if he chooses to do so and they refuse to serve him because of it...it's sexist. Same thing. If a place refused to serve a woman because she wore a tuxedo, lawsuits would be flying...again, it's not the norm, but basically the same thing.

By the way: a woman not being able to take her shirt off in public and a man can is sexist too...I'm not saying it's right or wrong, simply that it's sexist.

Just MHO I seen men wear hats in the Disney resturants. Maybe not V & A but others. My DH would never wear a hat inside to eat nor my son. I am not sure if it is sexist or not. It depends on what & where they asked him. Just my view:confused3

I think unless religion or medical hats should be taken off including women. I guess I don't like eating with my hat on never have never will so far. lol

You may not like what a person say but it is their right to say it. Or as my DH tell me if you don't like what people are saying don't answer it or bypass it. Could say what else he said but I will keep it to my self lol

IMHO men wearing hats indoors are rude, lacking manner and class, and are displaying a total lack of proper upbringing; but then I'm an old guy living in the past:cool2:

No I don't think it is sexist. It is proper etiquette to remove a hat. Also for the record, I have a problem with women keeping hats on too.Unless it is a "nice " dressy hat. Visors, mouseears and baseball caps etc. just don't belong in nice restaurants.:goodvibes

I agree.

So does Miss Manners BTW. I remember a column of hers some years ago that stated baseball caps are inappropriate for anyone in restaurants. Of course, she didn't cover mouse ears. ;)

I think it depends on where you are. As for OP, maybe her friend just had chemo and is uncomfortable with removing his hat. I certainly don't feel that someone's possible discomfort over a man wearing a hat should trump his discomfort. Also, I don't see why someone should remove their hat indoors, especially at Disney. I'm going in August and if I'm wearing a hat all day and sweating and have hat head, I don't want to remove my hat! :lmao: Also, my husband ALWAYS wears a baseball cap, always has, always will. He will not remove it indoors. Now granted, we don't go to fancy restaurants, but if we did, he wouldn't wear it. However, I think Disney is completely different. IMHO.

And why is this question posted twice in this forum?

It must have double posted.

That's the way my DF is, he refuses to take it off, or let anyone other then me, see him without his hat on. There are local restaurants he refuses to go to, since they won't allow him to wear his hat.

OP, so this is not about a medical condition. Well, all I can say is there will be many lovely upscale restaurants you and DF will not be able to dine in w/o DF removing his hat.

How about your wedding? Will he have his hat on for that? I am assuming as he is your DF that you will be getting married soon and he will need to remove his hat inside the church in front of all your guests. Maybe he should practice taking it off in public places so at the wedding he will not have any issues. Plan a date for the two of you at a fancy 4 star restaurant where DF cannot wear his hat and see how it goes.

Doesn't he get rude comments for keeping his hat on indoors? After my BIL had brain surgery (half his head was shaved and had a huge scar on it), he didn't feel comfortable taking his hat off indoors for a while (he never wore at hat before then). People were extremely rude to him. They didn't know what his reason was for wearing a hat indoors, yet some even demanded he take it off.

Since you BF has no real reason for wearing a hat, then he should take it off. Otherwise it is considered rude, and IMO, childish.

Do you know of any women that "need" to wear a hat?? I think balding men is much more common than balding women! :lmao:
