Weird and Ninja’s Pre-Disneymoon [Completed!]

I love Living with the Land. I'm glad they replaced the tour guide with a soundtrack. It must have gotten so repetitive repeating the same thing over and over.

HAHA - "Corn on the fob" - that has to be one of the best nicknames ever! :rotfl: I love it! I also use the term fob, or sometimes describe things as "fobby" but I didn't realize that is was a term that most non-asians weren't familiar with. Love that I found someone else here who knows what I'm talking about. I agree with you about the term - how it seems okay to use in jest to other asian friends, but not all the time in all scenarios.

Again, totally know where you are coming from in the "bitter melon" foods. By the way, I just tried brussel sprouts for the first time this past fall (at an asian household!) and was pleasantly surprised. Tasted a bit like cabbage to me. I didn't get what all of the fuss was about, but then again, the woman who cooked it is a phenomenal cook.

I love learning new things at Epcot!:thumbsup2

Mmmm... I love Brussels sprouts. Especially with cheese whiz (totally weird, really the only time I'd ever eat cheese whiz) - which makes them not healthy, but delicious.

I love the pictures of you and weird taking pictures. We do that all the time too.

And I love all the pictures of the hidden Mickeys. I'm so bad at finding them, but I always look!

Whoa, I've never heard of a fear of balloons before! What exactly frightens you about them? With buffalo, I hate the eyes amidst that gross hair. Are you afraid of them popping?

Its a combo of everything! The look, the smell, they can pop at any time-- and the worst part-- when they are half deflated and all shriveled. So gross!

Wow, you sure found a lot of Hidden Mickeys on the boat ride! I did see that one your mom is pointing out but not the other ones.

Oh, and I remember Alexis calling them "aldergators." Aww she was so cute. That show was kind of addicting...

Isn't it so much more fun to learn at WDW?!

Yup! That's why it'd be so cool to have a field trip with my students in WDW!

I love Living with the Land. I'm glad they replaced the tour guide with a soundtrack. It must have gotten so repetitive repeating the same thing over and over.

Yeah, I vaguely remember when they had someone speaking. I think it's better to have the narration because then I can make comments to Weird or my family without feeling bad that I'm talking through someone talking.

You have really made LWTL very entertaining! Love the heartburn shot - :rotfl:. Too funny!

I LOVE when people include stories when they show pics for LWTL because otherwise they all look the same. Haha, heartburn just ruins a lot of things.

"Funny" story about the fob thing ... one of my friends in college didn't know what the fob sign was (the "peace" sign). So I explained it to her, and she thought it was hysterical. When she started Harvard law school, they split up the students into sections or groups, and she was in group 2. They all took a picture holding 2 fingers up, so it looked like the fob sign. She then went to a fellow student who was Asian and mentioned something about it to him, and he told her that that's an offensive sign! My friend felt SO bad because she didn't realize it and was like, "RACHEL! You didn't tell me!!!" Haha, it was funny to me just I know my friend and she didn't mean it to be rude. She thought she was bonding. I told her that she should've said, "I have a best friend who's Chinese! It's okay! Really!"

Mmm, that's what I expect brussels sprouts to taste like! A tiny cabbage! Too bad it's not really a commonly used vegetable in restaurants, at least not the restaurants where I am.

I remember my mom used to always make broccoli with cheez wiz when I was a kid! We used to love it!

Haha, I'm bad at finding HMs too ... that's why I'm glad that there's a book for them!

Its a combo of everything! The look, the smell, they can pop at any time-- and the worst part-- when they are half deflated and all shriveled. So gross!

That's interesting! I've never known anyone to be afraid of balloons! Hopefully you're okay when you see the balloon CMs in Disney on Main Street!

Wow, you sure found a lot of Hidden Mickeys on the boat ride! I did see that one your mom is pointing out but not the other ones.

Oh, and I remember Alexis calling them "aldergators." Aww she was so cute. That show was kind of addicting...

The next update will be about Soarin' and I got a Hidden Mickey picture from that ride! I was excited to get that one on camera.

Yeah, I'm watching the early seasons again now on Netflix online. The kids were just so adorable!

Monday, April 5: In Awe of Soarin's Mechanics

In the last installment (haha, or three), we rode Living with the Land. We weren't yet done with The Land pavilion though. We still had those FP to ride Soarin' again!

As we were waiting on line, I opened my bag and realized that the few glo bracelets that I brought with me OUT of the tube, had cracked in my bag! They were already glowing!

IMG_6470.jpg

We went to the FP lane of Soarin, which is where Weird tooks this pic of me. It's blurry because I thought he took it and I started moving already, and we didn't have a chance to take another one. You can see I'm holding the FP tickets. I like this pic just because you can see the screens and all the colors!

IMG_1273.jpg

It was pretty entertaining to watch Matt go so far ahead of us as if he were excited to get on the ride! What I didn't really explain when we rode Soarin' in the morning was that Matt doesn't like the ride because he says he's afraid of heights. He grips my mom and closes his eyes. Two years ago, he actually started crying.

IMG_1272.jpg

I took a video of his jumping 360s. I just thought it was hilarious that he was acting as if he liked the ride! Maybe he does! Maybe he's getting used to it. I always tell him, "How scary can it be if mommy goes on it?!" (Click for the video!)

Mickey was absolutely fine with riding again. I think he's willing to ride anything!

IMG_6471.jpg

Weird continued practicing with his camera. I love that he's more technical than I am. I'd love to be able to take all these pics, but it's just not really my thing. We always talk about how he likes taking pics of things/places/scenery, and I like taking pics of people. I like moments captured in pics because I LOVE looking back at it. But a well-taken scenery pic can provide the same thing! Haha, Weird is stepping away from just taking pics of things though; you can see that since he's always snapping pics of me!

IMG_1274.jpg

Haha, like this one:

IMG_1275.jpg

I don't know what I was showing in this picture. The zipper on my bag? Haha, my lack of a tan? I have absolutely no recollection except for the fact that I know I was showing Weird something.

IMG_1277.jpg

Weird was intrigued by the lines on the walls.

IMG_1278.jpg

I was able to get another pic of the "prone" sign just in case one was better than the other. I've been thinking about how to incorporate it in class, and I really do like the idea of having sample sentences Disneyfied on the computer to show my students. I usually make them up on the spot and give a Disney sentence (typically park-related), but showing them the pic will be proof that these words are used in real life!

IMG_6472.jpg

Weird took a pic by the height stick thing. I was like, "YAY, you're tall enough to ride!" Haha, this is one ride where he wouldn't mind not being tall enough!

IMG_6473-1.jpg

I never really paid attention to the signs on the walls, so I was happy to have seen this and just take the time to enjoy it. It made Weird and me think about the people who designed it!

IMG_6474.jpg

Waiting on my little triangle! I think I should take more feet pics next time. I forgot whose trip report had a pic of 2 pairs of feet waiting on the line. I JUST saw it and I JUST commented on it!

IMG_6475.jpg

Soon we were allowed to go in. We got the 2nd row this time. I was amazed at the machinery that's involved in this ride. I've seen the part about Soarin' on all the behind-the-scenes shows so many times that part of it seemed to be replaying in my head while I looked around! Of course, now I'm going to have to go back and look around again to see where some of the characters from Kingdom Keepers 3 were since I read the book after this trip!

IMG_6477.jpg

I wish you could see Matt's facial expression. He was looking extremely grouchy at this point! I'm guessing my dad said something to him about the ride because he tends to provoke his children (me included!) at the worst times! My mom said it's a dad thing.

IMG_6478-1.jpg

Still amazed at the mechanical aspects of this ride!

IMG_6479.jpg

Once we were up in the air (and I still had my camera!), I took a pic of my family. The reason why I like this pic is not because Matt's face is buried in my mom's shoulder. I like this pic because you can see my dad looking over the armrest to the floor. He was probably thinking about the mechanics of the ride at that point or something! I just like that I captured that.

IMG_6480-1.jpg

Of course, since I had my camera, I took a pic of the feet dangling above us! I thought it was adorable that there was a tiny pair of feet to the left of the feet all the way to the right.

IMG_6481.jpg

One of the reasons why I wanted my camera during the ride was to capture the Hidden Mickey in the fireworks over Disneyland! It's not perfect, but you can see the shape!

IMG_6482.jpg

I'm sure it's pretty obvious to see, but I was all excited that I could finally have a pic that I could "draw" on to show you. Haha.

IMG_6482-1.jpg

The other reason why I wanted my camera was to take a video of this sound! It's silly, but I think it's so cool to hear the sound of all the seatbelts unbuckling at the same time at the end of the ride! So many people are probably waiting for the moment that the lock is released and we can push that little red button. I just had to capture it on video! (Click for the video!)

When we were leaving the ride and exiting the pavilion, I tried getting a photo of the balloons. It came out dark though because of the light streaming through the windows. Weird told me to try when we were farther up.

IMG_6484.jpg

I did get a pic of the empty eating area for Sunshine Seasons! Usually it's packed when you try eating there during the lunch rush. It was nice to see all the tables empty and all the chairs neatly placed!

IMG_6485.jpg

There we go! This is a better angle with better lighting, but it's not as crisp as Weird's pic that I posted in an earlier update. It's also not very good in terms of framing. Haha, I'm just going to say I wanted to capture the people going downstairs.

IMG_6486.jpg

Goodbye to The Land! Unfortunately, that girl was in the pic. I didn't feel like waiting since I knew someone else would get in the pic because it was crowded.

IMG_6487.jpg

And woohoo! We're done with one pavilion in Epcot! Don't worry, we still have plenty of more updates and pictures. Haha, and this is still only our first park!

Your so Silly Rachel! That was my TR! With the two pairs of feet standing on #5 for the Living Land Ride.

I love Soarin'! I really thought it was going to be so much worse than MS.

Poor Matt! But I can totally understand even that little bit a of height can be scary.

Wow, I have two updates to comment on - you finish with school and go crazy updating!

I had to giggle when you posted the picture of the cotton on LWTL and talked about how you just wanted to touch it - if I ever want to drive Justin crazy, I just grab a ball of cotton. He HATES it, says he can't stand the way it feels and it gives him goosebumps all over. Silly boy!

So glad you got to ride Soarin' twice, it's such a great ride!

Great update! I so loved the hidden Mickey in the fireworks. I will have to be sure and look for that next time we ride on Soarin'. And can I just say that you did a fabulous job of timing that shot! :thumbsup2

Aww that's so adorable of Matt acting excited and brave for Soarin'!

Woah great hidden Mickey! You timed it perfectly :thumbsup2

Great pic of an empty Sunshine Seasons! Calm before the storm...haha.

I have finished the 1st KK book now, so I know just what you were talking about! I've got the 2nd one, but haven't started it yet.

I read about someone's DH getting sick from looking down on Soarin'. I tried to look down, just to see what it looked like, but I wasn't on the end and it was hard to see "down" without leaning way out and I did not want to lean too far out! Can't be bringing down the whole hang-glider!

Hmmm, can't put any smilies in right now...

Anyway - I'm glad you guys had fun at the Land - Looks like you skipped out on the Timon & Pumbaa movie!

Wow I never realized how many hidden mickeys there are the Living With the Land greenhouse! I really need to get that Hidden Mickey book!

I LOVE Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry! That was one of my favorite books from middle school.

Your heartburn picture had me cracking up! :rotfl: Thank you for sharing information with us about your Chinese culture. I love reading your TR because it cracks me up and I always learn something new! :goodvibes

This is really strange, but everytime I ride Living With the Land and go through the greenhouse it reminds me of that park in Willy Wonka's chocolate factory where everything is edible. Especially the edible flower part!

I love all of your Soarin' pictures! You always notice the details in things during your TR! It really makes me appreciate the small details at WDW. I love that picture of those little feet dangling! How cute!! :lovestruc The hidden Mickey in the fireworks is awesome! And your drawing on it is hilarious!

Don't you just HATE when you lose replies to comments or an update? I'm good with updates because I never write them directly in DIS. I type them up in Notepad (takes less computer power than Word, in my opinion) and then copy and paste it. I usually do the same with the comments, but I figured that I'd just quickly type them up this time in DIS. And of COURSE, I was almost done and then I lost them all! Arg.

Two other random things about Soarin' that I forgot to mention since I'm really going by pictures at this point ...

(1) The one part I don't like about Soarin' [I realize I already wrote this in response to dellasgirl's comment below] is the scene when we're flying over the city at night. All the racing cars look like streaks of light, and I enjoy it for a moment. Then I have to either close my eyes or look somewhere other than at the screen. It gets me so dizzy. Maybe I can't adjust to that particular speed and my eyes try to follow the racing lines, but it's too quick.

(2) My favorite part of Soarin' is when we're at the beach! I actually don't really like the beach in real life, but when we're gliding over the water and dipping lower and lower, I really do believe that my feet might get wet! I get excited about that part EVERY time, and it never gets old!

Poor Matt! But I can totally understand even that little bit a of height can be scary.

Haha, I have such a bad memory! I read a lot of TRs yesterday (I read more than what I comment on too!), so I couldn't keep it straight. Now that I'll specifically remember that it was your pic, I'll probably have to take that exact pic the next time I'm there in honor of you and your DH!

I think Matt's fear has to do with slipping out. I reassured him that out of all people, he's actually the safest because he has to use that middle strap. He's short, so he falls under the height requirement. I also told him that the seatbelts lock, so they can't come undone. He should be able to trust the seatbelts ... well, that is until he reads Kingdom Keepers 3 and if he believes in the Overtakers, but that's a whole different issue ... haha.

Wow, I have two updates to comment on - you finish with school and go crazy updating!

I'm going to be away for 4 days, so I wanted to "catch up" a little on updating! I do like that I'm taking my time on this TR though because I KNOW that I won't be back for a really long time. It'll be years before I'm back in my favorite vacation spot! Prolonging this TR helps extend the trip for me, and I can live in the moments!

Haha, the cottonball thing is funny! Thankfully, my odd fears aren't common household items! My parents used cottonballs all the time to soak up this Chinese medicine to rub on bruises (it smelled, but it worked!). I don't know what Justin would do if he were in my shoes! Haha, my mom would force me to go get the cottonball and the bottle!

Great update! I so loved the hidden Mickey in the fireworks. I will have to be sure and look for that next time we ride on Soarin'. And can I just say that you did a fabulous job of timing that shot! :thumbsup2

There's actually a few more Hidden Mickeys in Soarin'. There's one on the golf ball when it comes flying towards you. Weird and I saw that there was SOMETHING on the ball, but it was too fast for us to distinguish it as a Mickey. It'll be something to try to find each time! Also, there's a Mickey balloon in the golf scene, but we couldn't find that one either.

Aww that's so adorable of Matt acting excited and brave for Soarin'!

Woah great hidden Mickey! You timed it perfectly :thumbsup2

Great pic of an empty Sunshine Seasons! Calm before the storm...haha.

I wanted to eat right then and there, but it was just too early! I'm sure if we ate a lighter breakfast, it could be possible. How peaceful would that have been!

Great updates!!!
We rather I loved Soring--went on it twice:banana:
LWTL is very interesting my DD#2 and i took the behind the seeds tour
and LOVED the tour
Keep the updates comming

It's really a lot of fun going on Soarin' twice! The only part I don't like and requires me to close my eyes or look elsewhere is when they have us flying over the city at night with all the racing cars that look like streaks of light. For some reason, it gets me really dizzy. I guess my eyes can't adjust to that particular speed, and it disorients me. Other than that, I love if all!

Anyway - I'm glad you guys had fun at the Land - Looks like you skipped out on the Timon & Pumbaa movie!

I love that Ridley Pearson really did extensive research to find out about the parks because it gives the readers more info and more things to look for and find! I think stuff like, "Finn Whitman was here!" Haha, as if these characters really do exist! It is pretty funny when you read the 2nd book though because they make reference to the fact that someone wrote a book about their adventures!

Ooo, hate to hear that someone felt sick or got sick because of Soarin', which seems like such a tame ride! I leaned way out this time to look down, but then I leaned back because you never know with the seatbelts! Even though it felt secure, things happen. It was really cool being able to look down though. Such a different perspective!

Yeah, we skipped The Environmental Fable. I thought it was good when I saw it years ago because it really does teach, but it's just not the kind of show that warrants repeatability for me. Plus, my goal was to get through ALL of World Showcase, something I had never done before!

Wow I never realized how many hidden mickeys there are the Living With the Land greenhouse! I really need to get that Hidden Mickey book!

I LOVE Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry! That was one of my favorite books from middle school.

Yeah, it really is such a comprehensive book for Hidden Mickeys! There are a ton more, I'm sure, but for someone who finds it difficult to spot them ... haha, the book is great! I never wanted to buy it for myself because I'm not THAT interested in them, but Matt is. That's why I bought the book for HIM because I knew it would help while waiting on lines and it would help make him more of a Disney fan (hehe). Of course, it meant that I have access to it too!

I LOVE the book too! When I told this past class that we were going to read it, they looked at the cover and read the book and started complaining. And I told them, "Trust me; it's a really good book. The writings so good and realistic that I spend a lot of time in the book feeling really bothered and angry at certain characters." I really like exposing my kids to the book since I teach in a predominantly white school, and I want them to know about things like racism. Through this book, I can talk about my own personal experiences with racism too. When they get to high school, it's going to be a culture shock for many for them, and they need to be prepared.

We delve into the history of blacks in the United States because I don't want this generation to continue having certain feelings towards certain races. They are shocked when I tell them how they kept black people down ... calling even the grown men "boy" or using the Bible to get them to "submit to authority" without questioning it. We also talk about broader issues like revenge since I do admit to them that I felt like shouting "HOORAY!" when the Logan children dig the ditch for the white school bus or when Cassie finally gets back at Lillian Jean. But I have them write a response to these sections and what the Bible does say about it (I teach in a Christian school, so I'm honest with them when I say I feel that those people got what was coming to them, but I can't promote revenge of course!). Haha, anyway, all that to say I love the book too!

Oh, and when we finished the book, I had about half the class say they really liked the book. They weren't entirely happy with the ending, but I told them that's what makes it more realistic too. Haha, the other half of the class never liked ANY book and hated any sort of reading.

Thanks for still reading! I like that you enjoy my babbling about everything from my irrational fears to Chinese culture! I LOVE writing because I think that EVERYBODY wants to be heard, and I'm not much for socializing in large groups. I try my hardest to get my students to understand that concept ... writing allows everyone to be "heard." I write the most on DIS, I have a personal blog (haha, it had to be made private because I talk about students using my nicknames for them), and a blog for my students (I post my own writing samples on it when I give them an assignment because I believe in modeling the writing process).

Wow, I digress a lot too ... haha.

Don't you just HATE when you lose replies to comments or an update? I'm good with updates because I never write them directly in DIS. I usually do the same with the comments, but I figured that I'd just quickly type them up this time in DIS. And of COURSE, I was almost done and then I lost them all! Arg.

It hasn't happened to me on the Dis, but I have lost messages on Facebook so many times! It drives me CRAZY! Either my browser would crash or I would hit a key that would make my browser go back a page. I really hate retyping messages, especially if they were long :headache: Now I try to type my messages out on Word first and keep saving them as I type. I don't want to take any chances!

Great updates on the Land! I love the pictures from Living with the Land! I really enjoy it, but we don't do it every time. I love Soarin. I could spend all day there.

I'm not caught up yet, but I am going to comment on your LWTL post first and then I'll come back and do the other one!

I am so bad at finding hidden Mickeys. Mostly because I forget to look for them. You guys found a lot there...maybe next time I go, I'll remember them!

I always think of Alexis when I see an "aldergator" and obviously I think of that show when I see "hairpains"...but I think we already talked about this...in this TR!

When you said you used to call Weird corny, I had to laugh because that is one of my students favorite choice of words. If I do something dumb/funny or want them to do something they really want to do and they really want to laugh and enjoy it but they're 'too cool' for it, they always say, "that's corny!" I always take it as a compliment! :thumbsup2

I love finding pictures of things from WDW to use in class. I used pictures of the mosaics in the castle when we talked about mosaics. If I teach about slavery this coming year, I''m going to steal your picture and use it, ok?

Cute pictures of you guys taking pictures of each other!

The edible flower reminded me of another story that DF and I always laugh about. We were at a wedding once and on the salad there was a flower garnishing it. We both put ours to the side of our plate and ate the salad, but DF's brother in law came over, sat down, popped the flower in his mouth, chewed it, swallowed and continued eating the salad. DF and I were both like:  Now whenever we see that kind of flower or a flower as a garnish, we always say, "Remember when Joe ate the flower!?"

I'll be back shortly after I read the next post!

Ok, back!

My glow sticks cracked in my bag, too! I was sad. But at least it wasn't all of them, so I still had a few for later in the night.

Matt definitely looks like somebody who is very excited to ride Soarin'! That's a cute video.

I don't really like Soarin' all that much. I think it's so hyped up on the DIS that when I rode it, I was like, "That's it?" Not that it's a bad ride, I just don't see what all the fuss is about.

Good picture of the Hidden Mickey fireworks.

I also have a thing with hearing all the seat belts unbuckle at once, although when I usually notice it is on airplanes and it always makes me smile. I don't know why...maybe because everyone was obviously waiting for the exact moment to free themselves of it.

Can't wait to see what's up next!

That's why I LOVE Gmail because it automatically saves the drafts when writing emails. I don't know if other email services offer that now too. I used to lose LONG emails in AOL way back in high school when I used it. I have also lost documents in Word; I once lost the last few pages of a term paper when my computer went wacky and crashed! I was able to get back about the first four pages of it. It hurt so bad! I automatically press Ctrl + S whenever I type a sentence or even a word!

Great updates on the Land! I love the pictures from Living with the Land! I really enjoy it, but we don't do it every time. I love Soarin. I could spend all day there.

My mom doesn't do many of the rides at Disney, so we make sure we ALWAYS hit Living with the Land for her. I think it's interesting to see what's being grown at that time because when I look at other TRs, there are different veggies or veggies that are in different stages of growth!

I'm not caught up yet, but I am going to comment on your LWTL post first and then I'll come back and do the other one!

I was thinking about the Hidden Mickeys and whether or not I'd take pictures of them AGAIN the next time we're on these rides! I mean, the fireworks one could be done again to see if a clearer version could be captured. But the ones on LWTL won't really change, like the hose one. Haha, do I take it again just to post in the TR for new readers who've never seen them before?

Haha, I gotta make sure Weird sees your comment about corny!

Sure! You can use whatever pictures you need, mine or Weird's. I trying to of ways to incorporate some UK pictures in World Showcase in my lessons, but I think it's the wrong time period for what I need (Shakespeare's time). I'll keep thinking! So fun to use them in class!

Haha, I like the flower story! That'd definitely be something that would be brought up EVERY time thereafter! Eating flowers reminds me of Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing when Fudge was eating flowers, and when Peter (Fudge's older brother) found out, he thought, "Maybe my brother's on to something" and popped a petal in his mouth and had to spit it out right away!

Yeah, Soarin's not really my favorite ride. I had such a huge debate over whether or not we should go to Soarin or Test Track first. Soarin' won because I did want to go on at the same time my family went on. Plus, I'm willing to wait in line for TT if necessary, but I don't think waiting for Soarin' is worth my time.

Oh yeah! The sound is similar to the hairpain seatbelts! I don't fly much, so I didn't associate it with the real hairpains.

More is on its way!
