Weimeraner thread (why not?)

Aww, Gorgeous!!!! Such a sweet baby!

My friend breeds these guys and has for years and years.

She has told me many a story about Weims. They are a very dominant type dog and need the Alpha taken out from the get go.

Very different from my easy going collies. Good luck with your Weim! :thumbsup2

Our Weimaraner is 9 now. She's a great dog- couldn't ask for a nicer pet. The only thing she is known for killing is a squeaky toy. They're asking for it though.

Yeah. Was. She grew up. They're known for killing housecats. We have to watch her closely and take lots of pics:

:scared1: They're known for killing cats. :scared1:

I think I'll keep looking. I want a nice, lazy dog. She's beautiful, though.

If you want a lazy dog, a weimeraner isn't what you're looking for. When Jane gets out (kids let her out often), she runs circles in my yard and neighbors' yards. People think she's a greyhound without the tail. She's so hyper she reminds me of our old friend.

She is precious! I could eat her up!!

I grew up with Weimies. My parents still have 2, and my sister has 1. My family has had Weimies since 1969. They are natural hunters, but they aren't "known" to kill housecats. If they're raised with cats from puppyhood, there'll be no problems. They do like to get bunnies, rats, squirrels, birds, and whatever else wanders into the yard, though.

They are very dominant, so they need a strong owner. They're super smart, too. But boy are they loyal and loving. Such great dogs! I also think they're some of the cutest puppies out there!

That puppy picture is SO CUTE!

My family has a Viszla, which looks like a Weimeraner, but red. They're hyper, crazy, loving dogs.

I don't mean to disparage the breed. They are what they are, and that's fine with me. But the fact is they kill cats sometimes. I should not have said "known for" killing cats. I should have said they are "known to kill cats". I researched the breed before I got Jane. Here are a few quotes from rescue sites:

They are still the game hunter and some Weims have a low tolerance for small fur bearing animals including cats and small dogs. Changing this behavior again changes the basic temperament of the dog.

Very brave and loyal, it has a strong prey instinct. Do not trust with small non-canine animals.

Can you live with the consequences of a Weimaraner's high prey drive? Weims can and do kill small fuzzy critters. If that happens can you live with it? That is the one single question you must answer, and do it honestly. Weims can sometimes live successfully with cats and other small animals; however, if the worst happens will it cause you to want to get rid of the dog? If the answer is yes, then you should NOT get a Weimaraner -- period.

And agreed about loyalty. I've never had a dog so loyal.

We almost adopted one years ago, and I have fallen in love with them, but DH won't look into them any further because they are so hyper. So we have a golden retriever and a golden retriever/mastiff mix which he says is so much more my speed! But I do love your pictures and I will always want a Weimaraner!

LOL!! I know firsthand that they can kill cats. :scared1: We had one when I was in high school who offed 2 neighborhood cats that had the audacity to come in to her yard. :guilty:

I didn't mean to imply you were criticizing them. :) I know they're avid hunters. But we've had 7 others that have peacefully co-existed with cats. Our "killer" was a feisty girl who had never been raised around cats. I loved her dearly, but she was a tough cookie! LOL!

One of my mom's current Weimies is actually afraid of my cats! She won't even get off my couch is there's a cat in the room - she sits there trembling and cowering. It's a riot. :rotfl: And my sister has a cat along with her Weimeraner boy.

I just wanted people to know that Weimies and cats can peacefully coexist. I know it doesn't always work out, though.

Regarding Weims and cats, our first two had a strong distaste for cats, our current pup at 6 months wants nothing but their love and attention, at least so far. Squirrels and birds in the yard don't stand a chance though. At 6 months she has a strong hunting sense already.

They are a very high strung high maintenance breed for sure, but I love them too much to change up!

Here's my Holly, photos I've posted before that I'm sure you're all tired of seeing!

Sticks don't stand a chance with her either, here is her daily collection :rotfl:

Forgot to add, this breed needs (and wants) lots of exercise. To have one crated or confined all day is a crime in my opinion.

HA HA! That's a familiar scene at my house. I need to take a picture like that. We live in a new house, so about once a month I have to walk around the yard with a garbage can collecting the things she digs up: chunks of brick, concrete, baling straps, nails, screws, 2x4's, old soda cans/bottles, etc.

I also have several holes in the yard that I could set fence posts in - deep, straight down and very narrow. I couldn't do better with a post hole digger. Do y'all have that behavior too?

Sooo pretty, Blondie! The stick collection is a riot!

My mom's and dad's dogs haven't chewed sticks as much, but they're not outside too much (their one girl is 15 years old). But their younger one has a penchant for eyeglasses.

Several of ours would devour almost anything. They'd eat entire bars of soap, whole. They'd suck down washcloths, whole. They ate Brillo pads, too. I guess they had a thing for cleaning products, LOL!

Anyway, we'd find all kinds of interesting things in the yard that they'd eaten and passed right through their systems. :scared:

My DH and I originally wanted a beagle and a weimaeraner, but God keeps sending us beagles (no lie - they just seem to "show up"). So we enjoy my parents' and my sister's weimies. They're very cool dogs, though, and they're hard to resist!

Wow, a 15 y.o. Weim? That's impressive! Our oldest one so far was 10 1/2. Unfortunately, they don't seem to live too long. Ofcourse, Shiloh's death was untimely and unfortante. He probably would've lived longer had he not been mauled by other dogs when we boarded him last year. :( He would've been 10 in June.

Holly is our first digging Weim, our two males couldn't be bothered. :confused3
We've lived in this house 13 years now, and she's bringing in things from the yard that I don't even know where they came from! A slipper that I know nobody here never owned, little plastic toys that the boys left outside 10 or more years ago that they forgot about that she must be digging up, nuts and bolts, etc. She's a riot!
