Recently I have realized I should and need to loose weight. I have been obsessed with calorie intake and walking a mile and a half to two miles a day. Managed to loose ten pounds in three weeks. Okay here comes the vent. Yesterday I realized that the riding lawnmower was broke down. I looked and saw the push mower. Hmm. Excercise:) So I proceed to pushmow a little over an acre of land. (Yes, Crazy I know) Counted it up and burned a bunch of calories. YEAH! BUT! Me and only me can be doing as much as possible to loose this weight can manage to GAIN 3 POUNDS!!!:furious::furious: What is wrong here!
Anybody else have the absolute worst luck when trying to loose a few?

give it a couple days, if you're sore, you're muscles are retaining water to help heal

Your weight can fluctuate based on different variables. I could weigh myself first thing in the morning and then before I go to bed and over the course of the day gain 3 pounds. I am not sure how often you weight yourself, but I would only do it once per week and the same day and time each time.

You may be developing muscles. Muscles weigh more than fat.

Did you guzzle a bunch of water afterwards? I'm sure it was just a momentary thing. Great job on the loss! How many calories do you eat a day?

Weigh yourself at the same time every day, wearing the same thing. That's the only way to figure out what your weight is, IMO. Then, average it out over 3-4 days. I don't use a calculator or anything, just kind of keep the recent numbers in my head. That keeps me from freaking about being up or down (currently 8+ months pregnant, so I'm not really looking to lose weight for a while). Don't worry about one day's weight until you've seen a pattern. Good luck!!

Actually no it doesn't. A pound of muscle is exactly the same weight as a pound of fat. Muscle is denser than fat, so it requires more space or volume, which leads to the common myth that it weighs more.

OP, don't forget to let your body rest. Exercise should take place 3-5 times a week, giving your body/muscles a chance to recover...and so your body doesn't get completely used to the same exercise routine. Don't forget to switch out workouts as well. Weighing yourself can be deceptive if you're not consistent about it. Do it in the morning, before you've eaten and before you take a shower, but after you use the bathroom. Try to weigh yourself around the same time because weight can fluctuate throughout the day. Also, since people tend to build muscle mass while trying to lose weight, it may seem as if weight isn't being lost at all...because while you're losing fat, you gain the muscle mass...as if they're canceling each other out. Sometimes the scale isn't always helpful in this case, so determining your loss can be helpful through the use of clothes as you change sizes.

Same thing happens to me. I can work myself silly all day in the yard or in the barn and barely take time to eat anything. The next morning I'll be 2 to 5 lbs. heavier!! Arrgh! :headache:

But I think it's water you retain while exerting yourself so much, especially if you get overheated. After a few days, it comes off again. I'm sure the water comes into play because even my rings will fit tighter!

I have been making sure I have been drinking LOTS of water. I haven't had a coke in 3 weeks. Believe me that is HUGE.Maybe it is the water vs. muscle thing. Sometimes the scale can be very discouraging. I weigh myself on Sunday mornings so I don't drive myself crazy with the fluctuations through the week. I thought my eyes were going to pop out of my head when I saw I was 3 pounds heaver this week than last. It's just irritating.

Are you eating enough? If you eat too little, and work out too much your body can go into starvation mode. Have you done any homework on how many calories you should be eating based on your weight, height and activity?

Another thing to keep in mind is your sodium in take. Not just the table salt, but Sodium is in everything, keep your sodium intake light the night before your weigh in. I was recently put on a low sodium diet and can tell you that your body does not need a lot to live. Just really watch that and it will help!

I have 4lbs to go to my weight loss goal. 110lbs down so far :thumbsup2
Its been 2 years now, adn I have been trying to get the 4lbs off for the past month. I joined a gym 2 months ago, and i can tell you that since I have been strength training, my weight has gone up a bit. But it seems to be coming down now. Its such a frustrating process. It really is. I agree that muscle does weigh more than fat. A pound of feathers weighs the same as a pound of gold too. But take a bag of feathers and a bag of gold and what weighs more? After 2 months, I can see some definition starting and am really excited! A trainer told me that when you first start working out the muscle do in fact retain water, which will effect your weight.
Chin up OP!!:goodvibes
Its a frustrating process, but dont give up or be too hard on yourself ;)

My weight also fluctuates due to the time of the month. The week before my period, I seem to suddenly gain about 2 lbs, but I pretty much lose them overnight once it starts.

I weigh myself every morning, and I do find that on any given day my weight can fluctuate a pound up or down. I just make sure that the trend is down instead of up (i.e., last week my weight seemed to vary between 136.0 and 137.2, this week it's been hovering between 135.4 and 136.4. My goal weight is 135, and after almost a year of exercise and a lifestyle makeover...I think I might actually hit it this week! :cool1:

You can't compare a bag in general because there's nothing defining the bag. The only time something weighs more is if there's more weight to it. So yeah, if you have a two pound bag of gold, it's going to weigh more than a 1 pound bag of feathers. Same with fat and muscle. If you have ten pounds of muscle but only 8 of fat, the muscle will obviously weigh more. The same can be said for the exact opposite. But pound for pound and ounce for ounce, it weighs exactly the same. I think the problem is that people are confusing density and mass for weight...they're very different things.

Yes...density is the key. Muscle is more dense than fat, so if you replace the fat with muscle, the scale might say you weigh the same, but you will in fact be more slender.

I usually weigh myself once a week at the same time (Saturday morning, right after I get up). I found that doing this, I don't know about the little fluctuations that come from weighing yourself every day and found that I was less frustrated with my weight loss progress. I also learned to not have salty food on Friday night (for example, I weighed myself on a Friday morning, had Chinese food Friday night and found I weighed 3 pounds more on Saturday morning! I knew this wasn't real weight gain, however, it would have been frustrating, especially since I had a good week).

I have done a little research on caloric intake. For my age and my heoght I should be taking in between 1300 and 1400 a day. I have been really watching too and making sure I haven't went over that.

Too funny that I would read this thread this morning!
I just had the same thing happen!

I lost 6 pounds in a month. Weighed myself this morning, and gained a pound back. Ahhhh! It stinks!
Think I overate this weekend though....went out to eat twice with people and went over my calories. (trying to do 1200 a day)

You keep it up, and I will too!
I will not get frustrated and give up!!:thumbsup2

Are you seeing differences in how your clothes fit?

Have you changed your eating habits?

Also, weight loss doesn't happen overnight. .
