I was wondering if anyone on the wish board was an older adult..I mean someone in their late 40's. My question is do you fins that losing weight has become so much harder now that you have reached this age or is it just me? I am so frustrated at the slow weight loss, I have been following WW's for the whole summer and have only lost three pounds, and being a veteran of dieting I am not doing a lot of cheating either. I jounal everything I eat and stay with in my points so I am pretty bummed. If anyone else out there is having this trouble I would like to know how you are handling it. Thanks so much.

vfb2girls, some weeks are better than others, let me tell you. Getting to ONEderland was such a high for me, but the next ten pounds (well, when I get there) have been really hard to lose. I know that I have played with my eating~more protein, even more water, and I seem to have plateaued the past month or better. I'm hoping for a WHOOSH before we go on vacation (heck, I even cut my hair, hoping for the next clippie!), but if it doesn't happen, it doesn't. It will, I know it will. But in it's own time! Keep strong, drink your water, up your exercise a bit (mall walking is good, I hear ;) ) and keep the faith. You can do it. I know you can!

Oh, yes. I am 53 years old and it is definitely harder for me.

The Atkin's Diet has been a little more rewarding for me in that I don't feel hungry all the time.

You can do it.

God bless, best wishes, and encouragement, RaySharpton:)

Whoaaaaaaa, now!!! You didn't have to go and call us "older" adults!!! The way I see it is that I've just been 18 for 3 decades now! ;) Surely I can sqeeze in another decade or two before I have to consider myself "older". LOL!

But, yes, I do find that it's different losing weight now than when I was younger. For one thing, my body tends to retain water much easier than it did. And it seems easier to stall out on my weight loss than before. A couple of things that have worked for me is increasing my water intake and being sure to exercise every day. When I am retaining fluid I will try to drink 8 glasses of water instead of WW's 6 and that does seem to help me.

Another thing I have noticed from posts on this board is that the less you need to lose, the slower it comes off. (This sure doesn't apply to me as I have 100+ to go!) Also, a lot of people on WW find that it helps to vary your eating patterns between the min and max # of points per day. It seems to keep your metabolism going. And if you do not eat at least your min point each day, that will keep you from losing weight.

Hang in there, vfb2girls, it WILL happen for you!:D

Hold onto your hat! You can do it! Do not give in. My doc says we "older"--who said that? I don't feel that way--folks will have a little more of a challenging time trying to lose as often gains occur with maturing and lower metabolizing, and in the case of women--change of life issues.

I can't speak for the WW style as I am doing Atkins/low carb and this has allowed me to begin to overcome my newfound weight issues. I have never in all of my life had to worry about weight until now, and I don't ever want to regain what I have lost. It took me all year to get here. I worked so hard last year and put it all back over the fall and winter. Finally I am where I ended last year and can now continue downward. What I am trying to say is just don't give up. It is challenging, but it can be done.

Remember that we are striving to be healthier and that this is the most important thing.

Good luck and keep on keepin' on. shhhh (btw--ok I guess 53 qualifies me to answer this post.)

I am 42 and Hubby is 45...we are both on Atkins and the weight is pouring off with little or no effort at all.

I have tried many other diet programs....funny thing is...Atkins isn't really a diet. I am eating the best food, still having beer (michelob ultra) and mixed drinks (with diet coke)...I have lost 25.5 pound in about six weeks. And that is with two major interruptions in the plan. We took a long weekend and ate off the plan with friends at some really nice restaurants...and then again for about 10 days while our daughter was home on leave from the Air Force...we spoiled her before she headed off to her next duty station. We were aware of what we were eating the whole time...and new it was right back to induction...which is pretty easy after the visitors were gone.

I started out walking on the treadmill a couple days a week, as my energy increased I added days, minutes and started walking up hill. I now walk on the treadmill 5 days a week. (got it at sears and I love it...it even takes my heart rate for me in the middle of my walk). I have recently started using hand weights. And I think it is time to bring out my old Richard Simmons rockin to the oldies aerobic tapes...I love those...the routines are good for everyone.

So, hope this helps you. Good luck with whatever plan you choose...as many plans as I have tried...I think that the Atkins way of eating is going to be the plan that keeps the weight off.

My wife is 49, and felt that it was intermitably hard to lose weight, until she found the right approach, and then it was certifiably easy. While there is surely some impact of age on ease of weight-loss, it seems minor when compared to the overall difficulty of finding the right approach for you. Furthermore, I would worry about such rationale, since it seems to me that it would tend to reinforce bad behaviors -- it surely doesn't seem like it would reinforce good behaviors. I had back surgery in early 2001. I suppose I could have considered that folks who have back surgery tend to have a harder time losing weight since we're limited with respect to what we can do in terms of physical activity. But I think that would have resulted in my not trying what I did try, perhaps giving up entirely. I'm sure that it wouldn't have helped me achieve what I achieved.
