:wave2: Ok...I have been trying to lose weight for quite a while. this is the most I have weighed ever.
I have been getting depressed and then tend to eat.

So, I go to the doctor this morning and discuss this with her.
She said a low working thyroid can cause weight gain (I know this cause I've been on thyroid for almost 4 years now), and then she says, it can also cause DEPRESSION!!
What?! No one ever told me!!

My numbers are steadily climbing so, she took another blood sample and I should know by Friday if we can up my thyroid meds.

I have been telling her I feel tired, but my thyroid "numbers" have been within normal range.

Please say a little prayer for me that we can get this worked out and I can start losing weight, and out of the dumps.

Thanks for your support everyone!
Lisa

If you don't mind me asking, How much thyroid are you taking?

Have you seen a significant weight gain since being on it?
I was suppose to lose weight and I maintained it for a while, then started getting tired again, and around I go again.

Thanks
Lisa

Lisa, how often are you tested? The amount you need can change. Also do you take it on an empty stomach and do you wait to take vitamins (if you take them) for at least 2 hours? Do you take it at the same time every day? Is she checking your T4 or that plus TSH? The "normal" range is just that -a range. Everyone's different.

Low thryoid can really mess you up - weight gain, depression, fatigue, short term memory loss (the "wear are those keys?") type thing, cold, dry skin, irritable...

good luck to you!

Jennz,
I am tested every 6 months, give or take a month. I take it on an empty stomach...wait an hour to eat. I take my vitamins in the evening. She is testing TSH.

Man, there is so much I don't know about thyroid. I am usually right on top of medical diagnosis, but not on this one.
Maybe I should ask for a copy of the results so I know what all is going on.
I just ordered a book from Amazon about Hypothyroidism.
I know that will help me to understand some of it.

Thanks for the help

im on 1.5 i believe..it gets switched often, as my levels have a hard time becomming stablized. I havent gained too much weight in total, but there are times that i will gain weight when i have no appetite, but then i lose it again when my levels go wacky...
I have had a lot of problems with my thyroid surgeries and teh medicines because i was so young when this all started ( i was 8 for my first surgery)...there were times when i was very depressed and things like that, but that hasnt been for years..let me know if you have any other questions!

You're so right there's sooooooooo much involved! I've been hypo now (actually no thryoid) for 14 years and had Hashimoto's when I had my thyroid and I just found out a few months ago not to take my calcium within 2 hours of taking my levoxyl. Oh - that reminds me, for what it's worth...I used to take synthroid and was on a ridiculously high dose, over .375 & was still symptomatic and then my doc switched me to levoxyl. Now I'm down to .224. (That is still a high dose but I don't have a thyroid.) She said it was just one of those things... :confused3

They have a book about a diet for people w/hypothyroid. I thought about getting it but didn't because I figure I'm not actually hypo when I'm on my meds, so does it apply?

Hey Jen - I meant to ask you...do you think that it takes you longer to get over illnesses and stuff? I feel like it does for me and I've got my own theory working that it's because I don't have a thyroid...I've never checked with someone to see if they have the same problem or not. So...do you? :)

I'm on 50 mcg of levoxyl.
So, I'm still new at this!

I don't know about not having a thyroid, but I know it takes me longer to get well.

As far as the book is concerned, I did order it, cause I need to know more about this disease or condition.
Like I said earlier, my doctor just told me about the depression end of it.

I guess I'm pretty lucky this is my only complaint.

Thanks for the input ladies!
Lisa

P.S. Will let you know if there is anything interesting in the book
Lisa

Hmmm...maybe my theory works. It's that it takes me (us) longer to get better because "normal" people's thyroid levels vary and when they're sick it kicks it up and helps them recover, whereas our metabolism is primarily coming from a pill and our levels get depleted during illness and have to build back up. :confused3

I think it's amazing how much is controlled by your thyroid, that poor underappreciated organ. :) I'd love to know about the book. I've found out most of my info by having something odd happen and then looking it up on the internet and one of the causes is hypothyroidism.

Jennifer
i think your theory is right,, i have never thought about that, but it does take me longer to get over illnesses---my brother and i were sick atthe same time, and he got better in a day or two..not me..
also, i think i get sick more often...i think thats because i work at a day care, and then i dont completely recover and then BAM sick again!

It's so funny that this thread came up at this time.

I have been absolutely convinced that my thyroid levels were getting high again - hair loss, very irritable, at a total standstill at Weigh Watchers, etc. I finally got the nerve to call my endo. a few weeks ago and ask that they check my levels before my appt. in the next month. Well, my TSH was around a 1! I was so disappointed! So, for now I am still on 100 mcg. with a double dose on Sundays. I do take my levoxyl first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach. I take my calcium and vitamin later in the day. The only thing I can think that may be affecting my levoxyl is that I take it with my Prevacid in the morning since both pills have to be taken on an empty stomach.

I still think even though your hypothyroid is under control with meds, that it is harder for us with it to lose weight. My endo. told me last year that that was not true. I really think he was saying that so as not to discourage me (he knew I just started weigh watchers). My son's pediatrician told me that being hypo, even under control, DOES make it harder to lose weight. ARGH!!!

I have my yearly check-up with the endo. next week, so we'll see what they say. Actually, my appt. has been changed to his new nurse practitioner since I am apparently not important enough of a patient to have my 15 mins. with him once a year. Who knows - maybe I will end up liking her better!

I just really want to get rid of this last 8-10 lbs. so I can stop paying Weight Watchers!

(sorry for rambling...)

Kristi - I've had endos say the same thing that it's not any harder to lose weight but back to my theory... :teeth: if "normal" people's levels fluctuate daily and they have a healthy thyroid that can adjust to the changes but we don't, won't we have periods where our levels will be slightly lower and thus make it difficult to lose during those periods? I say a big YES to that!

Jen - I catch everything that goes around too! I thought it was just me. Someone can just say "flu" to me and I get it. I got a letter from our health insurance company telling me to get my flu shot, dh and dd didn't get one. Perhaps it's all related... :confused3 I take other meds too because during my surgery my parathyroids died and after years of going to the ER after I got a cold an endo finally made the connection and told me otc cold meds affect the absorption of calcium which led to my er visits for infusions. So my point is how much is still unknown?

i have hashimotos and am on 100 mcg of synthroid and 15 of cytomel. i don't convert t4 to t3 (or is it the other way around) hence the cytomel. i'm frustrated that i've been really tired lately and i just had my levels check and they're where they were when i felt good :confused3 :confused3

my dr said the thing for hypos to lose weight is not just calories but cutting out/way down on bad carbs. he thinks south beach is a good way to go. it's a drag since i adore pasta but i do feel better when i have fewer 'white carbs'

I have been on synthroid for 18 years now. I had a miscarriage in 1987 & that is how they found out I was hypo throid. It is very difficult to loose weight. Between that & my birth control pills it is so difficult. I'm lucky I'm only on 50 mcg's but I also feel tired all the time. I work 40 hrs a week & have a 16 yr old
DS & a 12 yr old DS that keep us going constantly. I know exactly how you all feel!!! Sometimes you think you are the only one with this problem until you read all of these posts & you realize you are NOT alone. Hang in there!! I just started to try to loose again (don't know why I try during the holidays)!! I'm trying to
cut out all "white" foods (pasta, bread, rice, potatoes) but it is sooooo difficult.
I could LIVE on pasta!!! :earsgirl:

Ladies,
I just got the book Living well with hypothyroidism.

I have just scanned through some of it and the author describes my symptoms to a "T".

I was reading a part about over the counter meds. I am always concerned when I have a cold and the info says Do not take if you have thyroid disease.
The author says she used to be able to take sudafed with no problem. Now she can only take 1/2 a pill, or her heart starts to palpate very quickly.

Well, I had a cold a few weeks ago, took the rec. dosage and my heart felt like it was going 200 miles an hour.

This book is going to help me a lot.
I got it off Amazon and it was only $4.00
It was written 5 years ago, but it has a lot of good tips, so far.
I am going to call my doctor tomorrow and see if they will give me copies of my blood results.
I just go by what they say, and I think I need to know more.

Good luck everyone.
BTW, we are having pasta tonight! I guess I won't be losing weight tonight.

Lisa

I've never heard that about cutting carbs w/hypo...I do know that carbs can really affect me though. I've switched to the fortified pasta, mostly because of dd (so she'll get some kind of fiber in her body! :teeth: ) I wonder if that helps. And it's true I sometimes feel like no one really "gets it" so it's always encouraging to read posts like these, it's not all in my mind. :goodvibes

my Dr emphasized processed/refined/white carbs. whole grains, fruits and beans are good carbs and he says they're good to have and that you should have them.

I had my yearly check-up at the endo - actually, I got booted to his nurse practitioner.

Since my levels we fine last month, she basically kept saying my thyroid was fine. Ok, that is good.

Then she lectures me for 10 mins about exercise. Fine, I know I should exercise. I know it's hard for anyone to find time to do it, but I think my situation is worse than most. I work 3:30am-11:30am. I get home by 12:30pm and DH leaves for work at 2pm. DS2 does not go to day care since one of us is always home. With my crazy work hours, I nap in the afternoon when he does. Then we get up have dinner, and an hour or two later, it's bed time. After DS is in bed, I get ready for work the next day and get to sleep around 9pm. I am ALWAYS exhausted. I really do not have much time at all for exercise. I explain to this nurse that I have been doing what I can. For example: I now go up & down stairs at work ALL the time now that they moved us (never use the elevator). We don't even have a bathroom on this floor - I make lots of trips all day long with all the water I drink! I have begun taking the stairs two at a time even. I always park far away from a store and walk. I have been seriously trying to add bits of exercise wherever I can. I walked DS to the park a mile away, uphill & pushing him in his stroller last week. She then says to me "the stairs don't count - it only counts if you have at least 30 minutes of sustained exercise." HUH?! All the new info on exercise says that even small bursts of activity "count!"

Oh, and she asks about my extremely dry & cracked hands. I tell her they've been pretty bad and that I load them up with Auqafor at night and wear gloves to bed. She says well that's just because it's winter. I say "well, it's been like this since August." She doesn't respond. She then flips through my file and says that I complained about extreme dry skin last year too. She then asks if I ever saw a dermatologist as they sugggested back then. I say yes, in May (not winter - their excuse for my dry skin!). She then asks what the derm. said. I tell her that my derm. said it was most likely my thyroid! She looks at me then says "I guess you are in the middle, huh?" End of that subject.

She also kept saying how great it was that I am down 20 lbs. since last year. Yeah, that is great. BUT, I have been doing WW faithfully and haven't lost anything since July! I have been hanging around 10 lbs. above goal since then. She then went into her 'we-women-have-to-exercise' spiel.

Sorry so long! Just had to get this off my chest to those who understand! I know my thyroid levels check out fine. I just think there is something going on. Probably nothing major, but something nonetheless! It just would have been nice to have truly been heard.

I am NOT going back there next year!

Oh boy! I just saw this last post. What a mess!
I feel for you. I understand your problems though.
I go to a nurse practioner also. Her husband is the doctor of the practice.
She is really good about most stuff. I don't think she is as up on everything as she should be, though.
I think I know more about thyroid than she does.
That is why I am thinking of going to an endo.
In the book, Hypothyroidism, it says it is very hard to find a good endo.
Try to find one that specializes in Thyroid problems. Gonna be hard for me in this small town!

At any rate, vent away about it all. It is discouraging at times, I know.
