subbing is adding the thread to your list of subscribed threads - some people have their settings so that when they post to a thread it is automatically added to their list of subscribed threads

you really do not have to post a message saying "subbing", you can just go up to the top of the thread and under "thread tools" click on "Subscribe to this Thread"
