I am a couch potato so I would be starting from scratch. 20 years ago I was pretty good at working out and seriously considered competing. I did do bike rides and we even biked one of the volcanos in Hawaii. Now I'm starting out again. I want a bike. I would be doing sprint duathlons. No way will I swim. I need a bike. I used to have a Cannondale I loved, but unfortunately I can't afford one of those right now. Is there a bike you use as a weekend warrior that is under 200 you can recommend until I can afford more and know I will stick with this at my advanced age?

Seriously ... look @ your Local craigslist - for a name brand bike that you like.

Cannondale ~ Trek ~ Specialized ~ Giant ~ Raleigh ~ etc ...

you can get creative in your looking on Craigslist by inserting the brand (name)

and the type (Road or Mountain) Bike in the search box to narrow down your search ...

you might be able to get a used (older) bike with good components ...

for $200.00 (plus or minus) ... This may take a little time but will

be better in the long run. I'm not saying ... a Top end Bike but certainly

better than a department store bike (Target - Walmart - Costco - etc).

I ride everyday ... and prefer pre 2005 bike frames (Mountain Bike) because

of the geometry ... have fun & be safe ... w00t

Check out Performance Bicycles. You might find a a good sale on a name brand, new one. I got mine there and it's held up well for 7+ years but I spent $300. It's a hybrid now with road tires due to being my tri bike (I don't do them often enough to get a real tri bike). Performance will stand by their products 100%.

Many bike shops also sell used bikes, you could call around to some of the locally owned shops to ask. Or, if you have any acquaintences who used to ride more and have fallen off the wagon, ask if you can borrow their bike for awhile while you save up. Some people would be happy to know their bike is being used, even if not by them! :)
