I'd like to hear from those of you who've had to deal with a situation like this. What did you do about it and the outcome.

My neighbor doesn't take care of his yard. There is a chain linked fence between the yards that I'm guessing the previous owners of my house installed since the ugly side is facing my yard. My question is, who is responsible for the weeds growing up the fence? Am I responsible since it's my fence? Or are the neighbors responsible since the weeds started in their yard?

Usually fences are placed along the property line. You are entitled to do what you want on your side of the fence. Spraying some sort of vegetation killer on your side of the fence is one way to deal with this.

I've been pulling them from the fence so that they don't spread in my yard. I just wondering who was responsible for the weeds. I'm going to a township trustee meeting next month regarding the property and the yard, I wasn't sure if I should include the weed issue or if it was my problem since the fence is mine.

If you are saying that the yard is so neglected that it qualifies for addressing from the city then that would be my only focus ~ the entire yard (which includes weeds) needs to be maintained. Perhaps if they address it, the problem will be resolved.

Now for anything creeping into your yard, it is yours to address. I would be spraying weed killer the length of the fence.

But if the city is not inclined to do anything it would be on you to figure out your long term plans for your yard and your view.

We have a neighbor who's fence is on OUR side of the property line (that's another story, waiting for a surveyor before making them move it), and he put some kind of pvc lattice looking thing up. Right up against some kind of wire fence that he already had there. All of the weeds are growing between it and then sticking out onto our side. I mixed some vinegar with dawn and epsom salts and sprayed the heck out of it,,and it all died off. I figure I will have to do it until we get the fence situation addressed.

There's a "nice side" to a chain link fence?

Well, I guess the poles/supports are on one side and the chain link on the other, but neither qualifies as "nice" IMO. :D
And on top of that it depends on local codes. Some make you put the "nice side" facing out, some don't. I think the poles/supports side is the bad side.

I'd say you are since it's your fence. I'd also say if there is 1 person that cares about it and the other doesn’t...whoever cares would be better off just taking care of it/doing whatever they need to to feel better about since the other person will probably not.

I always put down Roundup along the fence line, kill the grass and weeds all for about 4-5" out so I don't need to weed eat. Only one of the 5 neighbors every complained that I killed the grass on "their side"of the fence. I showed him where the property marker was located, both were on his side of the fence, thus I did not kill the grass on his side of the fence at all. I was very happy when his wife left him and the house went up for sale.

Is their yard also fully fenced (like with a gate)? Or is it just your fence running along the one side?

I guess it depends on your relationship with the neighbor, but the few houses I have lived in where one yard was fenced and the other not the fence owner just went down both sides to make sure it was clean and maintained. We had huge fenced yard when our kids were little and my husband just went around the inside and then walked down the neighbors' sides with the weedwhacker as well. The neighbors on all three sides were all glad to have him do it because that saved them the work.

I would just talk to the neighbor and ask if they mind if you take care of the weeds on both sides.

If the weeds are on your side you deal with them. I have weeds all the time growing up my fence and I don't really care about it, if I am out there I will pull some off but otherwise I really don't care- if my neighbor cares they can pull them off.
