Wedding themes

Hiya

I've noticed a few brides on here have used themes for their weddings. I really want to do something like this but I'm struggling for inspiration. I can't rally use my bridesmaids colours because they are bright blue and I'm struggling to find things to match especially flowers. I love the colour too much to change it though. I really wanted to do menu's and favours around a theme but don't know what.
If you have chosen a theme where did you get your inspiration from? Any suggestions would great too..

My theme is "Under the Sea"... this one was easy for us! DF and I spend just about every weekend out on our boat. We live 3 miles from the ocean and practically live on the beach. Our reception is in the Living Seas, so the theme fits perfectly. I have gone kinda crazy with keeping everything fitting with the theme, but it's fun!

Where's your ceremony/reception? What kind of things do you and your DF do for fun? Any special family traditions? Do you have a favorite restaurant or favorite vacation spot? You could also do a Disney theme, like Mickey & Minnie, Cinderella, or something from your favorite movie.

We're also having our reception at the Living Seas since we're both big beach people and we originally wanted a big beach wedding. We knew we wanted blue too, but I was also having trouble with coordinating everything. For now, this is what we've decided..

Our colors are going to be navy blue and silver.
We're using this as our "logo" to go on invites, welcome bags, etc..

Where necessary, we'll have our names above and wedding date below the castle.

We'll have navy blue tablecloths with white napkins. For centerpieces, we'll use white calla lillies with a sheer silver ribbon on the vase thingy with 3 round votives.

For our bouquets, we'll be using white/lavender (maybe some darker purple too) calla lillies. The girls will be in navy, the boys in silver. Something like this..

Then we'll have navy welcome bags with our logo with silver paper behind it glued on, the menus will be pasted onto silver paper then onto navy blue, etc.

I was really dead-set on having coordinating flowers too but it took me awhile to realize the colors don't have to match. Just have fun with it!

If you can't theme with color, you could always pick a character or image or something special to you (sunsh1ne did a great boardwalk theme) to gather inspiration.

Thanks for your replies. I'm having my reception at the American Adventure Parlour room. I did think of red, white and blue theme. But I think the colours would clash with my bridesmaids. I also thought of stars and stripes but DF wasn't too keen. Even though we're getting married in Disney, DF is stil unsure of the whole Disney thing so I'm having trouble getting him to have anything Disney. Talk about hard work but I think it's cause he's never been before and I have.
I'm taking silk flowers over with me as I'm from the uk and managed to match them perfectly but if I wanted centrepieces to match too I would need to take the centre pieces myself. I'm struggling as it is to fit everything into my suitcase.
My invites have already been made and they are gorgeous. My bestfriend designed and made them. They are a rectangle box with a ribbon tying it when you lift the lid it has a 3D castle inside and a scroll with our invite written on it. It's hard to explain but they are gorgeous and took him absolutely ages to finish but they are fantastic. I woud like to continue with this theme but I suppose I'll just have to keep working on DF.

If anyone else has any ideas it would be really appreciated.

With blue bridesmaids dresses, it would look really pretty to have contrasting colored flowers, like red or orange! I'm a huge fan of contrasting colors (ours are turquoise and orange) rather than shades of the same color, though!

I call our theme "vaguely Moroccan" cuz we're having the ceremony in Morocco and there was a sorta Moroccan/Moorish look to our invites and our cake, but that's about it. We didn't want to go all crazy trying to emulate elements of a culture we don't know much about.

Picking specific colors might help you if you can't think of (or decide you don't want) a theme. Also, you could just use a pretty monogram or pattern to tie together programs, menus, invites.

Maybe you could make an inspiration board like interior decorators and party planners do and pin up all the pictures, fabric swatches, colors, etc. that you like and then see if a theme jumps out at you!

My boyfriend and I couldn't decide on a theme of any kind. There are so many things I like, so I really feel pulled in many directions. And since a lot of his tastes are different than mine, it makes it even worse. He wants me to have everything the way I want it, but I want it to represent both of us. It's his day, too, afterall!! I think what we're going to end up with is just a very loose theme: Our favorites. We'll just do our best to make sure nothing clashes and be done with it. I'm actually really happy with this idea, though I'm sure to most brides, it would seem way too unorganized. But I don't want to have to choose between things like Beauty and the Beast and the Little Mermaid or Mickey, and I don't want my boyfriend to have to put all his preferences aside just because it doesn't match our theme.

My theme is "entertainment" / red carpet type. My DF and I both work in entertainment at WDW and have a lot of friends who are actors and technicians. We're having a red carpet for the reception and hollywood walk of fame stars for favors / seating cards.

My suggestion is to think of who you and your DF are. What is it that makes you, you. What things do you both love and enjoy and you can go from there. I think it's more personal when your theme is a reflection of who you are.

I like the red white and blue theme! You're from the UK, and having your wedding in the US... in the AA Parlor, so i think it's perfect! Just use a blue thats closer to your BM dress color... OR, use navy and just have it as a minor color. Your table linens could be red and white and maybe you could have blue napkins.

Maybe you could find some cute little castles to use as your centerpieces and continue with your castle theme. I know theres A LOT of castle stuff out there... i stumbled on a lot when I was doing my research. Although, some are "knock offs", they try to look like Cinderella's castle, but are totally not. Maybe you could do a bunch of different types of castles... one on each table. Your theme could be "royalty" or something... since theres quite a few castles in the UK.

Have you had your planning session yet? You should mention your centerpiece idea to Disney Floral... maybe you can MAIL your silk flowers and they could make it for you???

everything in my wedding is themed separately, at first this really bothered me, but now i don't care. i REALLY wanted a christmas wedding, but that didn't occur. i'm not really good at theming things, and my planning was so quick that i didn't have a chance to think things out...so i themed myself, basically, and threw everything else to the wind...

my theme is 1940's-ish...i'm arriving in the rolls, wearing a cage veil, a fur wrap and opera length gloves...oh, and i just bought these fantastic chandelier earrings that are fabulous.

my sisters are my bridesmaids, and their theme is just that.

my reception is at living seas. that is themed enough for me. i decided not to do a character, since the aquarium is in the room, it will give enough backdrop for people to be entertained...

mark doesn't have a theme yet. he will once he gets off his butt to go buy a suit.

all in all, i don't think a concrete theme is necessary. many of the locations in disney are themed themselves which makes it so much easier.

I had this same dilemma. Here is a link to a thread where I asked the same question. Also, at the time I was having my reception at the AAP (before we outgrew it) so people make suggestions that are fitting for that site.

i had the same problem when i started planning. and it will all come together
but, i did have a thought. how about Nautical?!? you could use blue, white and silver.
and maybe boat names for table numbers and you know how in the boat industry each letter has a flag you could use your married name first letter pic on menues, programs and such. also maybe even anchors. somehere or light houses.
you could go as far as you wanted with this. or you could just use the color pallete and maybe little touche. i personally love blue, silver and white. and it goes with castles also.
i saw abouquet which was white little round flowers and blue ones (i know not much of a description) but it was so elegant.

o i had another one (did i mention i love this) maybe just stipes and polka dots. And you could use stripes on the invites and polka dots for others. And then creat centerpeices with flowers that look that way. i am looking for pics of blue now. i hope i find some.

yea i dont know if you like this atall. but i so love this bouquet!! those little pom poms come in alot of colors i think that it would be really diffrent. well hopfully someone can use this heheh

We initally just wanted a fairytale theme, not concentrating on one fairytale, just all of them. However, I changed it to a "wish upon a star" theme. I found some really grate favors and place card holders and it convinced me.

Our reception was in the China Pavilion and the theme of our invites/newsletters/placecards/table markers was Cherry Blossoms - which I guess are more Japanese but oh well! I love them! We even found cherry blossom chopsticks which we placed at each setting. Our table markers were the Chinese Zodiac (Snake, Ox, Rabbit, etc) with the years and descriptions and I made sure to include some parasols in our buffet setup and bamboo in our mostly rose centerpieces.

Our colors were pale pink, deep burgundy, and gold which flowed through to everything right down to the cake and cake knives.

I'd always envisioned a pink wedding and I was nervous it would clash with the red of the China Pavilion but it worked and was gorgeous! Go with your gut.

We also didn't want a "Disney" wedding - no mice, no coach, no Disney music. (other than a little You'll Be In My Heart and A Whole New World somewhere in there at the reception) But... I had to have that castle cake topper!! LOL

I have a hidden mickey theme. There will be hidden mickey's in my flowers, hair, unity candle, and favors. We also have a little boston theme going on as well. All of our tables are named different places in boston we like, we are going to play dirty water and sweet caroline. We are also wearing red sox hats in some of our engagement pictures.

I did a Cinderella theme (but didn't go overboard, at least I don't think I did ) but my colors were a royal blue as well, so I figured I would most. My girls were all in that beautiful bright blue (which I think photographed nicely) and Disney (Laura Kidd) did a WONDERFUL jobs with florals. I was very nervous with doing blue dresses but the flowers came out beautiful. Here are some pics of the dresses:

I don't know if this helps, but I know when I was planning my wedding, the more pics of other people's weddngs, the better! I am a visual person and the more pictures I saw, I got a better idea of what I wanted!!

We are doing a "Wish Upon a Star" theme as well. Our BMs are wearing a royal blue dress and our other color is silver. Our STDs had shooting stars on theme. Stars are such an easy thing to find. We also put the wishes theme song on our wedding website.
