I’ve been going back and forth on doing a dolphin swim and/or stingray encounter on our 7 day western. I’m looking at a couple different ports but just now noticed for the first time that all jewelry must be removed on these. My wedding rings have not come off my finger in a good ten years and I don’t think will come off. Does anyone have experience with this? Can I not do these excursions if I can’t remove my wedding rings?

While I don't remember making a conscious effort to remove my rings, I think I just didn't want them falling off in the water. My husband and I both left ours in the stateroom safe, along with our watches.

My suggestion would be to put any rings that you don't want to loose in your stateroom safe. My wife lost her ring while snorkeling on our first Disney Cruise while in Saint Thomas. The combination of having sunscreen on your hands and being in the water, just increases the chance that it can slip off and you might not even notice until back out of the water.

When we did it at Chankanaab in Cozumel, they told everyone to remove jewelry(injury to dolphins). There were lockers that we put our stuff in. We had already left our watches and rings in our cabin's safe. I wouldn't book it unless you can get your rings off. It's a lot of money to spend on something you could be denied doing once there.

Yeah, some rings could injure the dolphins. You're touching them and at one point, hanging on as they pull you back to shore.

I didn't wear any jewelry off the ship on the day we did a boat tour on one of the islands. Between the snorkeling, and the climbing in and out of the boat, etc., I was terrified to lose something (my rings in particular).

We did a dolphin encounter in Hawaii. My niece at first refused to remove her belly ring. They told her all jewelry had to be removed for the safety of the dolphins or she couldn’t participate. She took it off.

Thanks for the replies. I honestly thought I’d get feedback of all jewelry excluding wedding rings needs to be removed, but it’s better to know whether it’s the outcome I wanted or not!

The operators of the dolphin encounters and also the stingrays are very strict about jewelry, so don’t wear your rings. We have done both of these in different places. I would not miss, especially the dolphins. Wonderful memories.

I take mine off every night because I can’t sleep with anything on my hands. Sometimes they get very tight because of swelling, I find if I put some Vaseline on my finger and start twisting my engagement ring and band come off with a little work.

My rings were stuck on my finger for 8 years. Last summer I had the jeweler cut the rings off and re-size. It took about two months for the swelling to go down and then I was able to be re-sized. It was the best decision and I’m so glad I did it. If you have enough time before your cruise I recommend doing this.

this ain't gospel but is our experience having done a few of these 'interactions'

A simple wedding band is usually not a problem if it is simple smooth metal ... anything with a stone(s) on the other hand IS. If all you have is a simple band (you can't get off) you can also consider covering with a piece of tape or a band aid but be careful here as a band aid eaten by the animal is bad too.

I agree with the comment about getting the issue addressed however ..... having the bands so tight you can't get them off WILL become an issue further along. Go in for any sort of surgery/anesthesia and they want all metal off ..... Mrs finally gave in to resizing (or a new band all together) after this became an issue. We both find it is better to remove and clean underneath and even clean and polish the rings more easily . . .

I need to do this but have put it off for years too. Cruise is in a week so this is probably not the time. You’re right, I’m sure I’ll be so happy when I do, just never prioritize or think about it really.

Not to get morbid, but my dh is a former F-16 pilot. They don't wear their rings when flying. Can't risk having it get caught on something if they were to do an emergency ejection. You'd hate to be in a car accident or something and have your ring get caught on something. I realize something bad happening is pretty rare, but please do have it taken care of after your cruise. On a more happy note, only one week until your cruise!!

When we swam with the dolphins we were asked not to wear any sunscreen -- it can be harmful to the dolphins.

Just put a waterproof bandaid over your rings. It will hold them on and also protect the animals.
