Hi everyone! I am getting married next June, and my fiance and I are in the process of setting up our registries. I have asked my mom and his mom this, as well as a few other women, but I thought I'd get a bigger response if I opened it up to all of you!

What is the one thing that you cannot "live" without that you think I should register for?

A bit of background: I am 23, nearly 24. DFi is 26. He has lived on his own for a few years so he has some things, but most of them consist of "big" pots and pans. I have been sick for several years and was unable to move out, so I really do not have much in the way of household things I am bringing with me. I am doing better now, but still need to be careful with the type of things we get as far as weight, size, etc. I am hoping you guys can help!

I would say a crockpot for sure. So convenient and easy to use. I did not register for fancy china because I knew it would just gather dust and didn't want people spending so much money on something I would use maybe once a year. I remember I received a beautiful pasta set(big serving bowl and bowls.) It just broke 17 years later after constant use. Congrats!!

Crockpot and microwave oven. Also, dishes that can be used in a microwave. The fancy china that many ask for cannot be used in a microwave if it has any metal in the paint.

Microwave vegetable steamer
Several paring knives
Small, medium and large cutting boards in wood and plastic
neutral bath towels

  • A set of bakeware
  • A set of baking utensils, including measuring cups and spoons
  • a nice set of knives, with a sharpener
  • A nice pot set, say the Rachel Ray or Paula Deen one.

When we were married 5 years ago, I took my mom along with me to register. It was a definite help as my dh and I hadn't lived on our own beyond the dorms/basic apartment life. I went practical for many things and am glad I did. Everyday dishes that can go in the dishwasher, appliances that I knew I would use frequently (waffle iron and Magic Bullet blender turned out to be 2 of our favorites!) and everyday linens (towels, sheets, kitchen towels) have been wonderful. One things that I didn't think I would use, but find handy for many occassions is an assortment of serving bowls/platters. Perfect for taking food everywhere...dinners, work potlucks and tailgating too! My 12 full place settings of china with glassware and silverware is fully packed and never been used. Someday I suppose!

I also say a crock pot. Actualy, I have three. I have a 6qt a 4qt and then a mini one for dips and sauces. Everyday dishes. We didn't register for fine china because we knew we'd never use it. Instead we registered for a Pfaltzgraph set and have been very happy to use these every day, including holidays. Also, corningware. Finally, a good vacuum.

I got married in June of 08 and I registered at 3 different places-- I just wanted to let you know that my best and most stress-free experience was at Bed, Bath and Beyond (the other two were Pottery Barn and Macy's. I also used Target when I registered for the baby, and that was a total nightmare.) BB&B gives you cash when you return things-- so helpful!

Some of the things I constantly use are:
Everyday dishes
Corningware
Pyrex bowl set
hand mixer
crock pot
toaster
knife block, every day silverware
coffee pot
cookie sheets
bedding
bathroom decor (soap pumps, trash cans, etc.)
Dyson vacuum cleaner
measuring spoons/ cups

Some things I don't ever use:
fondue pot
kitchenaid mixer (I know some people use theirs often but I don't, and I can't justify how much was spent on it that could have gone towards more things from the registry.)
bread machine

To answer your question though, I guess the ONE thing I couldn't live without from my registry is either my crock pot, my coffee pot or my Dyson.

Stainless steel strainer-a big one. In addition to well, straining pasta, potatoes, etc, I've steamed shrimp in it. LOVE it.

Pyrex dishes, you can cook darn near anything in them. Those are the two things I really still use, 15 years and a divorce later!

gasp! I would love this! man, would it help with my Christmas baking. hint hint....:lmao:

OP, Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!!! Some things that we registered for that we can't live without... our set of big mixing bowls. we use them for everything from baking to when we barbeque and have to mix the hamburger meat with the seasoning. Also a set of rubbermaid food storage containers. Stuff for the rest of the house is good too. Sheets, towels, picture frames. Have fun!

toaster oven
microwave
stackable mixing bowls
electric hand mixer (still use the one I got for my bridal shower 30 years ago!)
farberware pots of different sizes (again still using the ones from shower)
non-stick frying pans (I like calphalon)

These are the things use most often.

Dutch oven (enamel coated cast iron)
Food processor
Kitchen Aid mixer
good set of knives
cooling racks (can use them to make bacon, too)

I've been married a long time now (my youngest is 30) and I'd say good knives. I've never used a crock pot, lol, but the knives are used every day.

Good high quality cotton sheets in white, white and white. They go with everything and you can't beat the feel of clean cotton sheets. Ditto white towels. I actually like Walmart's white towels :goodvibes I think they're about $2.99.

I would also nix the china and stemware. A set of beautiful wine glasses might come in handy. But unless you have a china cabinet, you're going to have all that china, silver, and crystal stored in the closet. I opted to go with dishes and stainless flatware--everything goes into the dishwasher.

Pitchers. Clear glass one, colored glass ones, cermaic ones. I love mine and they are something that I wouldn't buy for myself.

As my sig shows, I'm getting married next year. We've been discussing what we truly need as far as gifts. Not much - DFi owns a condo, and I've been married before, so we each have stuff. We have the basics...everyday dishes, a new set of pots and pans, Pyrex, a crock pot, a coffee pot, a microwave...

We're going to register for sheets (I have a queen bed that I don't use at the moment, so we'll need bedding for that), towels, a set of Corning Ware French White baking dishes, a vacuum cleaner (with a hose attachment...apparently bachelors with 2 cats don't actually need that  )...

But the one big thing we truly want - Home Depot gift cards. We're not going to stay in the condo forever. It needs fixing up before we sell, so we're planning to put a notation on our registry that we'd really appreciate Home Depot GCs!

Our most used registry item was a stand-up clothing steamer. DH has to wear dress shirts for work every day, the and clothing steamer was invaluable! It would take 5 minutes each evening to steam a shirt and was much simpler than ironing. We still use it on a regular basis.

I think we may have gotten out Roomba for the wedding as well....

I also reccomend some high quality bed sheets. DH recomemends high quality knives, since we cook alot this is useful for us. I also received a hand held food processor/puree item that has been useful

A beautiful crystal vase for flowers...doesn't have to be expensive. Every home needs flowers from time to time, through thick and thin. It makes a happy home. My mom told me this when I got married and I remember it often.

Best wishes to you~

Waterford crystal anything! Right now we have the goblets and candlesticks. They make any table look exquisite.
