Both her dad and I are paying for the wedding & reception. However, he is being kind of insistent that his name and his current wifes name go before mine and is putting pressure on our daughter to do so. He says that's the proper way to do it. My ex can be difficult to deal with. However, I would be insulted if the step mother's name came before mine on the invitation. She is his 4th wife and didn't have anything to do with raising my daughter, and I've been the custodial parent since 1990.

She shouldn't even be on the invitation and you should definitely be first!! Tell dad to go scratch (and that's the dis friendly version of my reply).

I feel bad for your DD. It's a shame that he's putting that kind of pressure on her. It's absolutely ridiculous.

Thank you all for your replies. I'm going to have my daughter & soon to be son-in-law read this thread tonight and then let them decide what to do.

This wedding planning can get stressful! I just have to keep things in perspective.

Remember, it's their wedding. They, not some nebulous etiquette or tradition should decide. They shouldn't have to stress or worry about it. If there is no obvious answer that will make everyone happy, change the rules. Use the "together with their parents" language. Or, heck, don't use specify any "host" in the language. "The honor of your presence is requested..." or a casual "You are invited to....". What exactly is the point of specifying a host anyway?

My parents are divorced, DH's parents are divorced and his mom remarried and dad passed away. DH wanted them all on the invite. So ours read:

Jane Doe and John Doe

Request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their daughter,
