Ok like any girl i love looking at wedding dresses but the prices just seem well crazy. Does anyone think its tacky to wear a prom dress (white or majority white with like silver or gold or maybe your wedding color as the embrodery) and maybe even getting it on clearance ?

I considered that for a while. I saw some that were AMAZING and I seriously considered it. Unless you get a really expensive prom dress, it will not have the detailing (especially on the back) that you would get on an actual bridal gown. If that's not as important to you, go for it. Who would know honestly? I would go try on real ones though, even if you're not going to get one just for the experience.

Have you tried looking at David's Bridal, or any of the discount bridal gown shops online? Join the Knot and go read some of the feedback on the online sores and take a look around. There are some great deals out there! Personally, I got mine fron David's Bridal, when they were having a $75 off sale, and I got my gown and crinoline for $550 or so. The $75 off the dress paid for the crinoline. I personally was not willing to spend much more then $500-$600 for my gown, since I was only wearing it once, but I was thrilled with the price!

turtle51I agree with Kristen. DW bought hers from David's Bridal! She paid less than $500
:jumping2:

P.S. Hi Kristen!

Don't forget eBay!! I got a dress like Kristin's (I didn't mean to, I swear!!) on eBay for $95 plus $44 s&h! I was bidding on a whim, I never figured I'd actually get it for that price! :cool1: The dress was shipped from Hong Kong in 3 days, yeah, 3 days!! It is my dream gown!! I love it, but I only hope I can make it look as good as Kristen did! Ohhh, the pressure! ;)
There are some of the same gowns you are going to find in the stores for much less expensive prices. And if you go for a used gown, you can save even more or get a really expensive gown for next to nothing.
And there are lots of knock-offs to be had, if you aren't a stickler for the tag inside that nobody else is going to see! ;)
For what you'll spend on a prom gown, you can get a true wedding gown!
If you're new to eBay, they have tutorials and information before you get started. The basics are, if they have good feedback, they are ok. Oh, and read the fine print before you bid, or ask questions, first.

also it can be cheaper to have one made, my mom made mine and the total was $99 for all the supplies. If you pick a simple pattern and give the seamstress a good amount of notice you shouldn't have to pay too much to have the dress made.

I'm trying to figure out if mine is like Kristen's too...is that David's style 9004? If it is, there are 3 of us!

Another bridal/formal dress supplier to try is Jessica McClintock...she has all sorts of dresses and some bridal as well... they are beautiful and most under $500! :flower:

I was just going to say...my senior ball gown back in high school was made by her, and it was a white ball gown with a corset top, spagetti straps and then embroidery/rhinestones on the corset, the skirt was tulle on top of tulle on top of satin on top of tulle, VERY princess-ey...

I got my dress through Davids, I think it was like $599-$75 off on sale...so not TERRIBLE, but my senior ball gown was $200...and people thought I was a YOUNG bride when we went to dinner :rotfl:

Yes, I bought my gown at David's Bridal and i couldn't be happier, also saw that same dress through an ebay bridal shop. they had similar dresses to david's bridal gowns. They are made to look just like them at 1/2 the cost and do have a warranty of some sort. However, David's Bridal wasn't that bad. I paid roughly $700 for my gown but they had ones even less expensive as well!

Another option are bridesmaid dresses if you want something simple. My dress is actually a bridesmaid but in white, it looks like a bridal gown, ahahah! But, if you are looking for big poofy, I echo what everyone else has said as well as try finding last season's dresses, those will usually be discounted as well

Even nice bridal shops usually have a range of prices. I went to House of Fashion in Sacramento, which carries all the name designers (Vera Wang, Amsale, etc) and I got a Jasmine dress there for about $700.

I got mine at davids bridal for $99.00!!! You have to dig though, because they won't bring them out to you. Seriously, look on ebay. Also, www.preownedweddingdresses.com has some great used dresses that are in perfect condition for cheap. Try a consignement shop in your area. Cheap dresses are out there. A prom gowm will be missing a train, that is what makes a wedding dress...a wedding dress. You should reeally stear clear of a prom gown, I think you'll lose that bride feeling. I didn't want to spend a lot on my dress either. Just look for discontinued styles....which is cool because then, NO one else shares your dress! Good luck and happy shopping!
