Wedding Dress Transportation

How did everyone, or how is everyone planning to get their wedding dress/bridesmaid dresses to WDW? I live in Michigan and I really don't like the idea of carrying it through the airport or on the plane…but it's the best solution I can come up with.

Has anyone had any problems with having your dress as a carryon?

I had booked my wedding dress steaming through Carolyn Allens, so a couple weeks before my wedding I shipped my wedding dress, and crinoline through UPS to her shop. I was able to track it all the way down and when it arrived at her shop they opened it up and inspected it to make sure that everything was okay with it. On my wedding day she arrived at my room with my crinoline and my wedding dress with her so I didn't have to worry a thing about it. It really did take a lot of stress off of me as I didn't have to worry about taking it on the plane or anything else happening to it on the way down there. Plus ATA was going to make me buy a plane ticket for my dress to bring it with me so it could sit next to me!!!!! (Yes my dress would like a gin & tonic, and I would like a Sprite to drink please, no my dress wouldn't really like any peanuts right now.......maybe later depending on if it gets hungry)

If you are thinking about having your gown steamed before the wedding I would strongly encourage going this route

Jenn - I actually bought a ticket for my dress to sit next to me on the plane. When we bought our plane tickets on Jetblue (Jetblue does not have closets on the plane, I asked) however many months ago, I looked into shipping my dress. Buying it a one way plane ticket (it will ride home in my aunts car after the wedding) was not that much more expensive then shipping it down to my EM. I think the cost difference was $20 or so. I decided the $20 was worth my piece of mind of knowing where my dress was, and what was happening to it. And in the end, just bringing it with me will actually be easier, as my dress won't be ready for me to pick up until the Saturday before I leave for the wedding (on Tuesday). I'm glad that I won't have to spend Monday packing it and shipping it, I have too many other things I know I'll have to do!

We used the prayer approach - pray that we'd have no problems with the dress as our carry-on that is My dress was stuffed and pressed in a garment bag (check on this when you pick your dress up, my "plane-ready garment bag" was a trash bag, I had to find another shop to buy a real bag). No problems getting it through security or on the plane. I boarded at the first call for children/those needing assistance. They hung my dress in a closet, that was it. No problems on the way back either. I elected not to have my dress steamed and it was fine. My dress wasn't too huge however - just a sweep train with an organza skirt. For me it was worth the worry to save a little $. Only you can decide what's best for you however!

My travel agent suggested calling the airlines ahead of time and letting them know about the dress/dresses. They will be more than happy to accomodate you. They usually hang them in first class somewhere. No need to buy an additional plane ticket!

We flew down in a large group, and even if you counted my dress as 3 bags we were still under our total limit. I folded it in half, gently, and placed it in the overhead for one of our rows (we had 4 row all together). Not sure it will work for everyone, but it did for us.

Flew down in march and used Delta Song and low an behold they had no cl;osets on the plane. We had my dress in a grment bag and put it on top it fit perfect as it lay across the overhead. i watched when everyone opened the overhead and made it clear that nothing else was to go onside that bin.........It was no problem taking the dress on the plane.....

I carried it on the Delta plane. They put it in a coat closet for me and let me board early. Coming home on Song they but it in a storage bin for me. The flight attendants were so nice about it.

For our November Wedding, we flew Jet Blue from JFK and I brought an extra seat for the dress. For an extra $70, it was the best thing we could have done. We got to bring along 3 extra pieces of luggage - which came with the seat - so we brought boxes packed with our welcome bag and other wedding supplies - which probably would have cost more to ship. The flight was packed so we were lucky to buy the seat - and they were really nice to us - they let us board early - but one flight attendant made me buckle the dress into the seat. We had a good laugh about that.

Since the flight was so packed - we would have had a problem if we hadn't bought the seat. When we arrived at the airport they looked at us a bit funny - saying "You know there are no closets on the plane, right?" And once we said we had brought the dress its own seat - they laughed and said that was a wonderful idea - and bent over backwards to help us.

And we only purchased the one way fare - since Carolyn Allen's picked up my dress for preservation right after the wedding and shipped it home.

For piece of mind - and considering we brought the extra boxes (all of which were being left in FL) it was a great value.

and for those from the UK......

I bought a suit carrier with a handle that folded in half so that I could carry the dress around the airport with ease. I took it on board as my hand luggage and the flight attendants hung it up in one of the wardrobes, I was in Upper Class but that said they did the same thing for a future bride sitting back in Economy so there was no discrimination on where you sit. There are at least 2 wardobes on both BA and Virgin 747's so there shouldn't be a problem. It was great having piece of mind that the dress was with me and then I just had Carolyn Allen steam it on the morning of the wedding.
