wedding cake carry-on?

hey there fellow disney friends!

i should start by saying that me and my DF are getting married in december. we got engaged at WDW in december 2005 and we are getting married exactly two years later.

i'm the oldest child in my family and my parents are having a really hard time with this. i will be 25 years old by the time of the wedding and they still feel that is too young. anyway, we've been butting heads a bit because of that. my DF and i moved to arizona together last year and we are having the wedding here before we escape on our disneymoon. my parents live in colorado. we finally got them on board with the wedding date and such, and now they're feeling left out of the planning. while we were working out our differences, my DF and i continued to plan (finding and booking vendors / venues, etc). you gotta start early to get the good vendors and the good prices - which we need because we're paying for it all ourselves. well, i guess my mom just thought that i should have waited until everything was cleared up before continuing to plan. now she feels left out of the planning. it's not like i didn't want to include her, it's just that i needed to get a move on. vendors / venues book up fast around here. nothing is set in stone yet, but we put down deposits on a bunch of things. i think if i go to her for advice about details, everything will be ok. which brings me to the point of my post...

i am going to my parents' house over memorial day weekend to see my youngest brother graduate. i want to take wedding cake samples with me. we found a great local place to make the wedding cake but we're having a lot of trouble choosing a flavor.

does anyone know about taking cake as a carry-on? we would freeze it the night before and wrap it up well. but i was noticing the TSA site has listings like yogurt and stuff that you can't have more than 3 oz. technically the wedding cakes have a middle layer of creamy filling. is this a problem? have any of you disney fairytale wedding brides attempted to bring home part of your wedding cake on the plane? yes, i could just overnight the a package with wedding cake samples, but we're really nickel and diming it everywhere (more money for the disneymoon). i don't want to pay the money to overnight something when i'm flying there at the same time. but, if i have to - i have to. i know it might not seem like a big deal, but i really think this small gesture will mean a lot to my mom.

thanks for your help! and hey, if you can't answer my question, maybe you can just tell me what flavor of wedding cake you chose? i would love to see some photos.

Some of the TSA agents are real sticklers and I know of people who have been forced to discard food that could be considered "gel" like, including pieces of cake. I think there was someone right here on this board who was forced to throw away the entire top of her wedding cake when she tried to carry it on.

So I wouldn't chance it. Your best bet would be to freeze & wrap the samples, put them in an insulated cooler, and pack it inside your CHECKED luggage, which is not subject to the same restrictions.

I was worried about carrying the cake back with all the regulations so we just ate it the night before we came home! We figured we will be back for our aniversary next year so we wont be home to eat it. It would probably taste bad anyway. I am planning on ordering a small replica for our aniversary when we are back in Disney.

I work for TSA and let me tell you, it really depends on the TSA agent. (hate to say it)

I have a few questions for you, what type of filling in the cake? is it like a fruit gel or a butter cream frosting?

The frosting type of fillings should not be any problem what-so ever. The jelly type filling is. When flying with it make sure you tell them what they are looking at. TSO's on checkpoint are extremely trained to know what they are looking at. and it shouldn't be a problem.

I flew yesterday (I was home buying my wedding gown) with sasuage and cherries and the only thing that was done was they ran the bag twice to see the top view and the side view. Just package it very well.

Also know that you can NOT carry ice on the plane. However once you get on the plane I am sure the flight attendants would be willing to put some ice in baggies for you so you can keep your cake as cold as possible.

Since the no gels and luqids on planes rule came out they have over time become more relaxed with the rules. For example lipstick (not lipgloss) is now accepted in a carry-on, whereas when the rules came out it wasn't.

Hope this helps.

They seem to be the most strict on international flights. However-- we got married last November and carried the our top layer of the cake on the plane. We had it put in the freezer of the WL conceirge and then took it on the ME and then the plane. NEver once did anyone ask us to open the box. We did have to send it through the x-ray machine but it was never once given a second thought. We got home with it safely and its now in our freezer. We flew Delta. Gl-- i wouldnt waist the cake-- atleast give it a shot. We did and it worked to our advantage. GL!:thumbsup2

op I actually just posted something like this on the community board. I'm trying to fly a whole cake to Florida and after tons of research it looks like it will all be good. It looks like you're just trying to bring pieces. I suggest putting them in a HARD box, like the plastic shoe siz storage boxes. bring some GOOD ziplock baggies and after going through security go to some of the food places and ask for ice. I'v done this before and had no troubles. Just keep it mind most people are saying it can get VERY hot in the overhead storage bins (if you put it up there) so check on it every once in a while. Plus someone else pointed out to me just to be careful if you do put it in overhead storage because other people on the flights might not care that this is cake and move stuff around to get their luggage to fit. Good luck. Just plan ahead and be prepared and you'll be fine

We had a very empty flight so I kept mine in my arms for a while until we moved seats where there was an empty one next to me. I kept the entire top layer of the cake (all together- one huge piece) and flew it in the box that they give to you when they box it up for you. GL
