anyone know why the mgm schedule shows a later than usual (8:30) closing for that night?

Maybe what you saw is a typo.
Disneyworld.com's schedule shows it open until 7:00pm with a Fantasmic show @ 7pm.

That is odd. But the disney site has the park hours that day from 9 a.m - 7 p.m. If you find any info on this please post because that is the day that we are planning on being in MGM and if there is some kind of special event than I would like to know about it. We are trying to avoid the crowds as much as possible.

an earlier version of the calendar at that web site (i'd printed it) said 7 pm. now it says 8:30 it's weird to think of a typo after it'd been correct once, but it's surely possible.

somewhere i read something about them taping at who wants to be a millionaire. anyone know about this? is it possibly related?

Disney regularly changes their calendar so be sure to keep up with it

There are schedule changes for the week of Jan 16. They have switched some of the early entry and evening hours around for this week I think due to the conventions and holiday weekend. I am afraid that it is going to be a rather busy week at "the World" The new schedule for this week ONLY is:

Sunday - Animal Kingdom PM
Monday- Epcot AM
Tuesday- MGM AM
Magic Kingdom PM
Wed- Epcot PM
Thursday- MGM PM
Friday- Magic Kingdom AM
Saturday- Animal Kingdom AM
