Hi guys,

I've been toying with the idea of learning web design for a couple of years now, and i think it's time I took the plunge and tried to learn.

Any advice on the best way to go about it? It would only be for me/friends/work and not really as a fully fledged business. I've read dreamweaver is a good program to learn, I already understand some code so I'm not an absolute beginner. I don't think I need to go for a qualification, just which programs/books to get to grips with. Also which are the best photo/graphics programs out there now?

Cheers guys,

Lynn

There are *tons* of tutorials available on the Internet (just google or yahoo! html tutorial). I think web design is very much a learn-by-doing process. Find a tutorial you like and start practicing your pages. Dreamweaver is the industry standard, but it can be very difficult to learn. I wouldn't bother with it unless you are wanting to do web design full-time. Photoshop is the industry standard for graphics, but again, unless you are doing this full-time, it might not be worth the money. Both pieces of software, Dreamweaver and Photoshop, are $$$. Nice to have, but certainly not required. Have fun :)

I use Photoshop 7 and it very easy to work with and very user friendly.

Husband has his own business in Internet/Intranet/Electronic Catalogue based software. Examples of his work include: http://whittleburyhall.co.uk/ and http://www.britishfencing.com

What is your background? Technical? Design? You could go in either direction. Is it a "bit of fun" or a serious business that you want to make serious money from?

Best advice is to find a good practical course or two and then try and get some experience at an established company. My husband has no formal web/computer qualifications. But had an engineering degree, lots of programming experience and 4 years of professional experience with a web software compeny (helped with establishing his reputation, gaining clients, having an understanding of how to run his business etc) before setting up his own business.
