Simple question, when is the best?
Planning on going July/August

Both are same, very hot with thunderstorms usually around 4.00pm but only for a short while and you'll be suprised how quick it dries up.

Everywhere inside is air-conditioned, so plenty of excuses to nip into the shops, "just to cool off a bit"

just take your time and drink plenty of fluids preferably water.

One year DD had to visit first aid for lie down and cool off as she was sick as she would only drink Coke, we now make sure she drinks lots of either water which she hates or Powerade.

We try and come out of the parks around 2.00pm and spend some time by the hotel pool or chilling in the room, before going back refreshed

Both are very very hot, if you ask the locals many will tell you July is unbearable - generally speaking either time is not the ideal time to go.

If I had to choose I would say August, marginally cooler and less crowded.

I agree with Johnny, I would go for August if I HAD to I have been in July and August before now and it was unbearably hot, the sweat literally pours down your back even when you are in the shade.

Do you have to go July or August?

Also, expect to get a cold.
Going form 20oC air conditioned cars into 30-35oC heat then back into 20oC airconditioned buildings WILL give you a cold!

My MIL always says she will catch cold if she gets cold but I thought it was a virus!

I would have to say as near to the end of August as possible, as it tends to get quieter as August goes on. But its HOT (and often rainy in the afternoon) whichever month!!

Just make sure you drink plenty of water, coke, etc while in the parks - its easy to get dehydrated because you dont notice how much you are sweating when in the sun!!

The venders selling soft drinks in the parks are happy to give you a handful of ice to put in your cap to cool you down too!

Just to add to what the others have said, july is very very hot indeed. Although not the best time to go if you cant handle the heat, if you have to just remember to plan well ahead, keep cool, drink water and take a step back.

Have Fun,

Shane :goodvibes

August by some way. Not because of weather, more because of crowds. US school kids are off July but are genereally back by mid August. I understand there is a MASSIVE difference in crowds.

Believe it or not, but putting ice around/on/near your head is actually the worst place to put it...

...basically your head is what senses your temperature. So if it unbearably hot and you cool down your head (and not the rest of your body), then your nervous system says that your whole body is cool. So you dramatically reduce sweating. Sweating is what helps to keep your skin and vital organs cool. So you can become very sick and keel over because the rest of your body isn't attempting to cope with the head (because your brain/head is saying it doesn't need to)... :scared1:

So ice is good, but not on your head ;)

I wasn't saying ice in your cap is the best way to cool down if its unbearably hot - you should obviously get into shade and hydrate yourself.

But i find it nice and refreshing if you have a warm head while pounding the parks!!

I just stick some ice in my cap from time to time to stop my head feeling too hot & sweaty, otherwise i get headache (i'm not used to wearing a cap everyday!). And its nice to suck on too (not after being on your head though!).

Hi

I wasn't saying that you were "saying ice in your cap is the best way to cool down if its unbearably hot" (if my sentence makes any sense...).

I was saying that icing your head (or having ice in your cap) could potentially make you very ill (regardless of what you do or don't do). If you ice your head, your nervous system believes that your body is not hot, so your body nolonger (or reduces it's) attempts to cool itself down. Definitely a bad thing to do to kids (who are less resilient than adults).

Ice is good, ice on/near/around your head is potentially very bad :(

Hey no problem.

I was just saying what i do because it works for me.
I'm not saying its medically a good idea and everyone should do it!

But the drinking lots of water bit is certainly a good idea!

:upsidedow

Indeed, a bit like smoking - most people know it isn't a good idea, but it is completely personal choice... :)

Am just trying to persuade others from trying it (especially for their kids) - since 99.999% of people would not be aware of the effects of icing your head, it is something that is useful to point out...
