How accurate are the weather forecasts for Castaway Cay? Weather.com is saying 30% chance of rain when we go next week (Tuesday). What is the likelihood we will lose our day on the island? Thanks!!

Did the forecast specify how much rain? If you get a few sprinkles, it's no big deal. Unless the forecast says to expect an inch or more I wouldn't worry about it.

in florida and the bahamas its actually likely there will be rain every day! usually for just minutes often, not an all day down pour. 30% sounds great and just check it every so often but don’t let it freak you out. unless storms or something like that are predicted, it won’t be much if anything at all. HTH!

No, no specific amounts. Most forecasts say a percent chance. Some say showers early. Some say say periods of rain and sun. I don't think it will be a washout, but I'm concerned about not being able to dock at all. Thanks!

I've found that accuweather is better at predicting in the Caribbean/Bahamas. Prior to our sailing I looked at it daily and daily it would change.... It was a big discussion point on our group Facebook page too, at the end of the day the storms that were supposed to impact us didn't and we had amazing weather....

I'd say try not to obsess about the weather to much like we did bc at the end of the day you are still sailing regardless, plan for some contingencies

Rain shouldn't have any impact on whether or not you can dock. It's wind or high surf that could change that.

The day we went to Castaway on our last cruise, it was pouring while we were docking. Everyone was eating breakfast inside watching the clouds get darker and darker until if just let loose.

Half an hour later we were all getting off the ship, the sun was out, it was getting hot already and the pavement was almost dry.

Here's your full, detailed forecast for Castaway Cay for Tuesday, April 14th, 2014:

At docking time:

Temp should be around 73 degrees for docking, with winds at 5-10mph out of the south-southeast with partly cloudy skies. (this is good for docking!)

By Noon:

Temps should be 75-80 degrees, with partly cloudy skies, winds out of the south at 8-12 mph.

At 4PM:

Temp should be 78-83 degrees, with partly cloudy skies. Winds out of the south at 8-12 mph. 20% chance of a shower or thunderstorm.

Now, on the way back to Port Canaveral, it looks like you will have to pass through a line of some showers and thunderstorms with winds in excess of 30 mph. You may have some stronger gusts, so it would not surprise me for you to have a rough ride back to Port Canaveral.

Now, this is after looking at all of the computer models for the last few runs. Overall, it is looking as of right now a pretty good day for Castaway Cay!

Unfortunately, the National Weather Service doesn't do 'official' forecasts for Castaway Cay. The Weather Channel does do some 'forecasting', which is more or less what their computer model prints out and then gets dumped to a webpage.

If anyone is ever looking for a forecast for Castaway Cay, please feel free to drop me a line. I'm not going to guarantee my forecast, but I do play a meteorologist on TV. :)

2 days before we went to CC they were saying upper 60s with a chance of rain. Day before 70 with a chance of rain. Day off it ended up being upper 70s, a bit breezy, no rain. I think it's hard to get an accurate weather forecast!

Less than 30%. What you should be concerned with is the wind and not the chance of rain. High winds will provide high waves which could prevent you from docking. Waves are what you should be concerned with.

People are funny. It sprinkled after lunch when we were on Castaway Cay and a whole lot of people scurried back to the ship. We had been snorkeling all morning, so we were wet already. We rented bikes and road around the island. Reminded me of Hawaii where people don't blink there at rain.
