Wearing jewelry through airport security

My teen DD is traveling alone soon for the first time. She wants to wear her usual jewelry, but her dad and I want her to just leave it at home. If nothing else, I'm not even convinced she can get through airport security without getting distracted and taking her eyes off some of her possessions.

I've read that you can usually make it through screening with rings on, but she has a James Avery charm bracelet with probably 9 charms, which is fairly heavy. And we've warned her that if it gets "lost" it will not be replaced.

I never travel with anything but costume jewelry and I take it off when I go through airport security, so can those of you who have tried to make it through with jewelry on please advise how that went? Especially the heavier bracelets? Thanks.

In the end, we will probably just ground the bracelet.

I have never taken off my wedding rings and always have a little cross necklace on too. Now that they do the full-body scan it's a total non-issue. In the old days sometimes the metal detector would go off but they'd just quickly wand my neck area and when they saw that the necklace set it off they'd just wave me through. Maybe added 5 extra seconds to going through security and I was absolutely never once pulled for secondary screening.

I've never taken off jewelry or had any issues as a result. I don't wear a lot of jewelry - 1-2 rings, maybe a necklace, and earrings.

They might ask to see her wrist if she's wearing the bracelet but it's no big deal. It happens to me quite frequently.

people wear jewelry through airport security all the time.
in fact now a days you may be told DON'T TAKE IT OFF because it just takes up time that no one has.
so either have her wear it or have her put it in her carry on prior to getting in line.

I always wear my jewelry through security (earrings, rings, necklaces) and I've never had any issues. I've seen some pretty heavily adorned women go through without incident as well. She should be just fine.

My Alex and Ani bracelets set it off every time and have to be removed. The TSA in Orlando said they have to ask people to remove them constantly since they're such a popular item purchased at WDW for souvenirs.

Nothing else I wear has ever been a problem.

About 10 years ago, I was going through security wearing a necklace that could only be taken off by unlocking it with a key (similar to this one). I'd made sure to pack the key in my purse, but I got distracted, so by the time I remembered that I needed to take the necklace off, my purse was already on the other side of security. Once I got to the other side, they wouldn't just let me get the key so I could be re-scanned. I ended up having to wait 15 minutes before someone could come give me the full body pat-down. It was VERY thorough. I was a teenager at the time, and completely mortified.

Now, whether I need to or not, I don't put any jewelry on until I've arrived at my terminal. I would always rather be safe than sorry.

Does it seem to matter what the item is made of? Hers is sterling silver.

No. All that matters is that they can identify what might be setting the metal detector off and this is NOT an issue in any case if your airport uses full-body scans.

Sterling silver, platinum and gold shouldn't have a problem going through security. However, I don't travel with jewelry that can't be replaced.

Magnetic metals set off the metal detectors.

Scanners aren't always used. Standard metal detectors are still being used, and total metal content is what sets those off. I wear metal frame glasses and don't take them off. But my keys, steel watch, cell phone, wedding ring, and belt always come off.

Magnetic metals set off the metal detectors.

That's a myth. If it were that easy, then a silver knife would be easy to get past metal detectors.

Airport metal detectors detect metal conductivity, and there isn't any metal that isn't conductive enough with enough metal. Silver is actually the most detectable metal. A small amount of any metal won't set off a metal detector depending on how sensitive it's set. If it's really sensitive, then silver fillings will be detected.

Should I be worried about my wedding ring? I don't think I could bear the thought of leaving it at home, yet I wouldn't want anything to happen to it.

Your wedding rings won't set off the metal detectors, so just leave it on withy no worries!

Hmm... I was told imagnetic metals set off the alarms, but there wasn't enough present in precious metals to set it off. Although, I understand your point..makes sense.

All metals react to a magnetic field or pulse, and that's how a security metal detector works. If someone is wearing a gold chain weighing half an ounce, that's not likely to set off a metal detector.

Yeah - iron, nickel, and other metals are ferromagnetic, but that doesn't matter with metal detectors. They don't detect how much metals move in response to a magnetic pulse. The magnetic pulse causes the electrons in metal to move, which in turn causes a different magnetic field to form, and that's what the metal detector is looking for. Silver is actually the most conductive metal, and is the easiest to detect.

Yup, my Alex & Ani set it off too. I remembered to take them off and place them in my carry-on with my return flight.
