Wear your seatbelt

One set of aunt & uncle in my family don't make their kids wear their seatbelts. :(. I'll never understand it. Needless to say, I can't recall a time where I rode in their car as a child - and I still wouldn't, even with a seat belt!!

First saw it on FB, with a "this will be banned soon" sort of tag to make people watch it. Just like I rarely read forwarded emails, I rarely click on those things, but it was the specific person who had posted it that I trusted, knowing she doesn't normally take part in such nonsense, so I clicked. I cry every time! Just cried again, even though I knew what was coming. Awesome PSA, the person that came up with it should be knighted (since it's from the UK).

Wow...that was a really touching video. (the OP's...second one too graphic for me).

I am a big believer in seat belts, after I 'learned' my lesson in HS by being in a wreck not wearing one. I was lucky to be alive.

I also am a big believer in child safety seats. It is amazing how many people do wear a seatbelt, then don't fasten their kids safely in a car.

They have been running this on tv here is Florida. I have seen it quite a few times. I think it is great.

I just watched the one of Facebook, wow!!!!!!!!!! There is a clip of a corvette essentially going under a semi truck. that guy actually lived through that. It was a few years back. He was evading the police.

I've seen both before. I was a teenager who had just started driving at the time. Generally, I always wore a seatbelt anyway (except in very infrequent circumstances where one was not available).

I remember thinking the first one was sweet, but it if I hadn't already been an avid seatbelt user, it definitely would not have made me one.

The second one had way more impact, I at the time had no idea that if I didn't wear a seatbelt, I was imposing a risk on my friends and myself. It is a handy fact to know when I try to get others to wear a seatbelt (I don't let people not wear a seatbelt in my car).

Ultimately, the second one left me with information that I did not know that helped solidify my seatbelt wearing position, the first didn't. I always knew if I died through my own recklessness, I would be hurting my loved ones.

Sorry thats what you're thinking. My thought is whatever makes an impact and works to save lives is a positive.

I really can't see the first one having much of an impact on high school kids, esp boys. They just don't go for that sappy stuff.

The facebook scared the poo out of me. I know some where fake, but the other taken from highway cameras and street cameras... I only got half way through it.

Before seatbelt laws came about, my dad refused to wear his seatbelt saying that he could brace himself. In 1982, he was in a car accident that left him comatose for over 5 years and then he passed away in 1987 never coming out of that coma. I have 5 siblings that agree with me when I say, please wear your seatbelt.

And yes, that first video is very poignant. I wish I could have embraced my father and prevented his head injury.

Those remind me of things we were shown around prom time in high school.
It was earlier this April. We had videos shown and people come in who were family members of people that died due to not wearing your seatbelt and drinking & driving.

What was sad is that 2 years earlier, a guy that was going to be a senior died from the other people not wearing their seatbelt. His family came in to talk with us and it about broke our hearts because we all knew the senior boy.

Big seat belt fan here..:thumbsup2

I will never understand people who don't wear them - and have absolutely no respect for parents who don't insist that their children wear them..:headache:

Thanks for sharing..:goodvibes

minkydog I had heard about your accident but hadn't seen photos before. At first I was like wow, and RV hit them and rolled over, then I realized it was your RV, you must have been scared out of your mind!
That is my biggest fear when we tow the trailer, I'm so afraid something will happen when towing it.

Tinkerbellie I'm sorry for the loss of your dad.

C.Ann we always wear seat belts but my MIL never did, and I do understand why she didn't wear one. When she was younger she watched 2 separate accidents where her friends were burned to death because they were trapped by their seat belts. It was a hugely traumatic experience to watch someone die that way and she just could not put a seat belt on.

for that reason I own a tool that is not only a hammer that will smash a window it also has a blade on it to cut seat belts. a few years ago my Aunt bought them for all the cousins and we had them installed in the drivers side pocket on the door.

My parents were never big on wearing seat belts; they always made us wear them but they never did.

When I was in Jr. High my mom dropped me off at a movie theater and for some reason decided to put her seat belt on while watching me walk into the building. She didn't even make it 2 blocks when a drunk driver hit her and sent her van flying across the intersection. We don't know what made her put her seat belt on that day but are very thankful she did.

Needless to say we all wear our seat belts now.

My friend posted this one about distracted driving. I made both my teens watch it. Warning: it's unbelievably VERY VERY graphic and does contain images of actual accidents, plus some staged ones.

Wow! That was very hard to watch. It just makes it so clear how little control we actually have whenever we set out on a road. It doesn't matter how good a driver you are or how careful you are. It only takes someone else who is impatient or distracted. So scary. True, the odds are with us, but everyday the odds don't turn out well for many.

My BFF did the same thing once. She never wore her seat belt, ever. She had dropped her boyfriend off at work and when he leaned in to kiss her goodbye she buckled up. He even looked at her weird when she did it. Not 5 minutes after pulling out onto the main road a guy in a pick up hit her so hard it lifted the back of her car up onto his hood. It was so scary to see the damage. Angels were watching out for her that day. Now she always wears a seat belt.

How did you install it so 1) You could get to it easily after possible accident 2) install it safely as to not come out during an accident? I have been thinking about getting one myself, but can't figure out where I would put it. Thanks.

Thanks to you both. It was a LONG time ago and I always tell people that for me, my childhood seemed normal but to others, it sounds very shocking. I certainly became a seatbelt proponent and will 'tell my story' whenever I can so others can learn from it. It sounds like there are a LOT of seatbelt stories out there and I really like hearing about everyone on this thread who says a seatbelt saved their life.
