I'm sorry, I'm just so excited about all this... Our undefeated Pearland Oilers won the 5A high school State championship Saturday night, taking down the defending state champs and #1 team in the NATION, Euless Trinity. The Oilers were the definite underdog, but they went to win. Their motto/chant is "Plus 1" -- one more point, one more degree of effort, one more fan cheering, one more big play... and they live that mantra. Like most towns in Texas, h.s. football is huge, and we're no different. The whole town is going absolutely nuts right now. :cheer2:

My son is in the marching band, and they have had an absolute ball being with the team through all this (after going to UIL State themselves a couple of months ago), doing their part to both motivate the team and rattle the opponents in turn. My son said it was pretty darn awesome to get to march at Cowboys Stadium this weekend. :)

It is just such an exciting, heady time for all of us here... I just had to share it with someone because my coworkers are sick of hearing about it, lol. Thanks for indulging me. :goodvibes

I'll say a reluctant congrats to you.;) I always cheer for Trinity except when WE play them...they're so big it's really scary. Trinity is an extremely diverse school with lots of economically disadvantaged kids, so they win a place in your heart, even if they pound you into the ground in football.

So Pearland must have been terrific if they beat them! :goodvibes

Our HS played in Cowboys Stadium in the second round of the playoffs. D is a drill team officer and she happens to have the front, center position...it was worth the loss just to get the picture of her alone at the point of the star on the 50 yard line.

(Also, let me add that it's fabulous to attend these HS football games at Cowboys Stadium for $15. I looked it up and the seat I had will cost $6000 for the Super Bowl!)

Congrats to Pearland! I'm an '86 grad of Trinity, so I was hoping they would win, but how exciting for Pearland! My dad and brother ('84 grad) were there at the game.

Hey, we have family in Pearland. Congratulations!

And yes, I understand what a big deal this is. :)

Gina, here's a story that your son will appreciate. Last year, when Cowboys Stadium was brand new, a neighboring school got to play there for the playoffs. My D has some friends in their marching band. Instead of doing their band show, they stood still and played a few songs. At a predetermined point in one of the songs, four band members ran to the star and one took the picture while the other three gave thumbs up. One of the parents was recording it all, live and on the "big screen." I think it's on You Tube somewhere. Their only punishment was not getting 3rd quarter off, so it was worth it.

We are all so proud of y'all! Congratulations from Sugar Land! :goodvibes

Thanks neighbor!! :)

Missypie ~ What a great story! And an awesome picture for those kids to have. For any Houston-area types, y'all will appreciate this: Our band got the rights (at the last minute!) to play the old Houston Oiler Fight Song as part of their show. Being a die-hard Luv Ya Blue fan until I take my last breath, I was over the moon about this. Booooo to Fox Sports SW for not showing the band at halftime (and for having the singular WORST coverage in general I have ever seen for a football game!!!) I'm anxiously awaiting fan video of the halftime show.

And you're right -- Trinity is a BIG team. Holy cow, some of those players are huge... it's like they have a pipeline straight to Samoa!

ElizK ~ I'm very jealous of your dad and brother -- I wish I could have been there!! Was too much $$ right before Christmas, with the charter bus fare and food and all. I had done all that in October to follow the band to State, and just didn't have it to spend right now. :( I think all of Pearland went!! Luckily a local family sports bar had a watch party for those few of us who didn't get to go. :)

Planogirl and disney_mommy ~ Thanks!!

And I hate to admit this, but as incredibly exciting as all this has been, I am really relieved that marching season is OVER!! We finally get our evenings and weekends back!! :) Just UIL solo & ensemble contest to worry about right before our trip, but that just involves individual practice time. I'll finally have time to play ToonTown again! :goodvibes

Congrats!!!! DH wanted to go to the game, but we had to get up before 5 Sunday morning, so I said no way!!

He did watch it on tv though and said it was very exciting (but he was pulling for Trinity since he knows people who have kids there).

We lost in the second round, and I think that except for the footlball players and their families, everyone else was glad for football season to be over. I have a dancer and a cheerleader and both teams were anxious to start preparing for their competition seasons. And those band kids have been out there practicing at 6:30 am since about August 1st, so I know they were ready.

I think it would be a blast to go to finals once, but for the schools like Trinity and Lake Travis that go about every year, I think it would be really taxing.

Thaks for the link! A guy at church was trying to describe that play to me and I couldn't follow the description.

When dh and I first got married, we used to go to the Trinity games and I was just in shock at not only the football team, but the entire production of the game. Wow, just wow. I came from a tiny little school in another state that always had a good football team, but to see the staff of coaches (our coaches were two or three old guys who also taught and coached all the other sports at our school), the trainers, the equipment, etc that Trinity had just blew me away. They are indeed a powerhouse team. Congrats, op, winning state is a huge accomplishment!
