Hi Everyone,

My family and I were at EPCOT on May 31st
and just happened to be at the right place at the right time. We were getting fast passes to test track at around 3:00 when a man came up and asked if we would like to test a new ride. Right away we knew that it was Mission Space. We said yes and off we went with another family of four who was waiting nearby. The man spoke into a radio and a CM met us by the bushes that surrounded the attraction so no one could get in. They moved the bushes and we were taken to table where we each had to fill out papers and sign our lives away. Then they took pictures of each of us and then as a group. All of our belongings were taken from us and put inside disney bags for safety reasons. We were then taken inside and given a tour of the area. There was a huge space station thing that was revolving and then an area that looked like mission control. We were put in line with two other families that seemed to be to dressed up and tidy for being in a theme park all day. Then another man (these men were not
CM's and wore several lanyards with cards. I never could get a good look at what they said) called for the next family and then said no, the theme park families have to go first. We were told were the seventh theme park family to ever ride Mission Space. We were taken into a briefing room where the actor Gary Sinese explains your job during the mission and some safety items. There was a man standing in the room watching us and writting things down. I guess he was looking for our reactions. The doors opened and we were led into the loading area where we were greeted by a CM and another man with the lanyards. I guess they could tell that my two DD's (14 & 9 ) were a bit nervous because they just made small talk with us. A group of teenagers got off the ride and they were all clapping their hands and saying it was so cool. I figured it wasn't going to be too bad. We got inside the "ship" and put our harnesses on. The control panel was pulled forward so that we could reach the buttons. Now, I think if you have a problem with close spaces you may want to avoid this ride. I also noticed there were little cameras pointed at our faces. The ride started and I felt sick immediately. The only Disney ride I've ever felt slightly sick on was Body Wars. This was much worse. In fact we all felt it but I had it the worst. DH's stomach never bothers in on anything
so I was surprised it bothered him at all. I hated the G forces and so did my two DD's. It was very uncomfortable. After that the ride got a lot better but I still felt sick through the entire thing. When we got off we were all asked for our reactions and everyone said they liked it but me. I told them it made me feel sick. Then they asked if they could use us in the promotion of the ride and we said yes though I doubt they would use me since I must have looked pretty miserable. I think if I hadn't gotten sick I would have enjoyed the ride because it really is something to experience. The family who rode after us felt a lot worse than we had. They got off holding their stomaches. We were all invited to play a game where you rescue astronauts which was fun and then we sent video postcards. My family wants to ride it again but I think I will skip it next time.

How awesome! I can't wait til I go back to WDW...I've been looking forward to Mission:Space for a while now and your post got me even more excited! Can't wait to try it for myself...

Oh, man! I was afraid of that! :( I don't do Body Wars or Star Tours for this very reason. And no Teacups either! Once I get that sick feeling, it stays with me for hours and ruins my day. So thanks for the heads up--no space travel for me :( :( I'm fine on the roller coasters and ToT though.

Most people report feeling nauseous on Mission: SPACE, but it doesn't seem to be quite as bad as Body Wars to most people. This is to be expected from a ride simulating space flight; after all, many astronauts start feeling sick once they are in orbit as well. You can count on the imagineers tweaking the ride system until August 15 to ensure that adverse symptoms are minimized. The final ride experience may be quite different from what it is now!

The warning sign states:

"MS will launch you on a thrilling adventure through deep space. [...] you will experience the turbulence and G-Forces of launch and re-entry and the disorientation that often occurs outside the Earth's atmosphere.

ATTENTION

Those who are made uncomfortable by enclosed dark spaces, spinning, or loud sounds should not ride.

WARNING!

For your safety, you should be in good health and free from high blood pressure, heart, back or neck problems, motion sickness, or other conditions that could be aggravated by this adventure."

I also understand that riders are warned repeatedly during the pre-boarding process that this is a very intense experience.

Wow how neat to get picked out of the crowd to test Mission Space!!! Too bad you got the nausea bug. At least you didn't have to wait in a long line to get queasy.

DH and I have been so excited to learn about this ride, but now I know I can't ride it. Not because a weak stomach....I love anything that's fast and spinning. Wdwguide pointed out something I didn't even think about for this trip.....I was just diagnosed with 3 herinated disk. Sounds crazy but I didn't even think about it. Guess I will re-evaluated my itinerary. Thanks wdwguide!!!

Must have been exciting to be picked for the "test" ride.
Appreciate the details. I was afraid of this ride being something that might make me (and others ) sick. Was hoping for better, but am not really suprised. I can ride Star Tours and Body Wars w/o getting "really" sick, but I must say when I get off it's with somewhat a sense of relief.
Will await other reports of course, but unfortunately sounds now like a ride I'll try just once and never do again.
Seems likely that the kinds of rides/attractions I like will never be built again-----:(

Ugh...I was hoping it wouldn't be that nauseating. Methinks the ride should be renamed Mission Spew ;)

Thank you so much for sharing. I have been waiting to hear anything about this ride. I pride myself in always trying a Disney new attraction, it has become a "thing" for my family. With that said, I hate going straight up or down - just not for me. I did do RNR at MGM a few times and the beginning always got to me but the rest of the ride was ok.

From what you describe I am not sure I will live up to the family tradition this year, but we will see.

Again, thank you very much for taking the time to post your experience on the boards I really enjoyed it.

Thanks for posting. I am absolutely fine with coasters, and TOT and anything which does not involve a 'rocking or simulator' type sensation, so I fear that this might produce the feelings of nausea I dislike. I am unsure whether to give it a go, and suspect that I probably will, but just the once.

Well, I'm one of those people that loves the feeling I get on Star Tours!!! I can't wait for Mission Space. As my friend says...'YeeHaw!!!' Now, whether my dh or dd do it is another story.

ToT makes me feel faint when it throws you up really fast. Is this what mission space is like ? are there sudden drops or jolts or anything ???

my family is very excited about this ride. however, after having read this and previous tidbits i think they can ride and i will SHOP!! LOL:p

Unfortunately, it sounds like I will have to take the chicken exit on this ride for sure!! Body Wars gave me nausea, and Stars Tours also but to a lesser extent. TOT I use to do until they made so many up and down drops. It makes me dizzy! Not a feeling I want on vacation, 1200 miles from home.

w8ting4pooh,
Dramamine or Bonine might help. My older DD wanted to ride ToT and RRC so bad, but when she did she felt awful. Then she took 2 Bonine about an hour before the ride, and said she never felt sick. If it worked on those 2 rides, maybe it would work on Mission Space.

magicmouse2-
There were no sudden drops but there were a few sudden jolts. I
think the feeling of being sick is from the spinning but you aren't aware of it. If I hadn't been told we were spinning I wouldn't have known it. I would suggest anyone riding go on it with an empty stomach.

Thanks for posting about your ride on Mission Space! Hopefully they can tweak the nausea prob!

Sorry to hear that you didn't feel well on the ride. Hopefully they will tweak it so people don't get sick so easily!

I've made up my mind that it doesn't matter if I get sick, I'm going to ride it. I've waited way too long for an experience like this and I just can't miss it.

millipore you read my mind! I was going to ask the same question. I think I could only take the "spinning" part of the ride for about 30 seconds or so. Even though you supposedly can't feel yourself spinning, I really don't like the idea of riding on a giant cenrtifuge. So how long does that last?? And also, I hope this isn't like that ride at other amusement parks that spins so fast that you stick to the wall(creating that feeling of weightlessness). I know for SURE I could not handle something like that. But I'm fine on Body Wars and Star Tours, so maybe I'll just suck it up and give it a shot....or maybe better...maybe I'll get my boyfriend to ride it first and see how he feels afterwards ;)
