DD turns 5 in Sept and we went out and bought two kittens!!! It was an early birthday present. The boy is a tabby and is so handsome and is going to be SOOOO sweet. We named him Tigger!!! The girl is a calico ans is still a little scared but I think she will come atound. Jennifer named her Skittles!!!

Oh what cute names! Have fun with them!

I love those names!!!! Our family adopted 2 kittens too--must be in the air (I just posted their photos on a different thread!)

Congratulations to you and your new furbabies! Such cute names they have too!

I have a tabby (Simba) and a calico (Cali). conCATulations on your fur-babies! Simba is the sweetest guy ever too. Another handsome tabby! yay! Can't wait to see pictures.:D

I'm with Doc Rafiki... my first response was "bought?"

my first response was "bought?"

I don't know how it was for mum4jenn, but we also bought our latest edition to the family. We got her from our vet, and for the cost we got spaying, shots, worming, and checkups for a year. The cost works out to be about half what we would have paid to go to a vet and get it all done "ala carte".

Yes.....we bought them.Down here the pet stores charge for their animals. We looked at a shelter and the ones we liked were not ready to be "adopted" yet. Also the adoption fees are quite high here. We got a package deal by getting both of them. They have their first shots and have been wormed already. We still have to get them "fixed" but we still have time for that.

Lets see some pictures please!! :)

"Bought" is ok with me. As long as the kitties are going to a good home, who cares?

:p

That just cracked me up for some reason.

Sorry, I don't mean to cause a stink or anything. It just caught my attention when I read the word "bought." Personally, I don't think consumers should support pet shops due to the cruel treatment (and untreated illnesses) these animals often suffer, especially puppies (puppy mills). There are so many kittens (and cats) in shelters that need good loving homes. Many will never be given a chance in life. Yes, the adoption fees can be high, but you're money is not going to pad some store's profit margin. They go back into the shelter system to help save more animals. Many shelters survive on donations alone.

Those of you who have "bought" your pets, I'm not coming down on you. You've made a difference in that animal's life. Love them, care for them, and spay/neuter them. But if you decide to add to your fur-family, please visit your nearest animal shelter. And remember, older cats can make wonderful pets, too. :D

I for one didn't take that the wrong way :) We were going to go through the Humane Society, but the kittens our vet had were in the same boat in that they had been dropped off and nobody wanted them. He charged the prepaid discount prices for his services to be sure that whoever got them would be more likely to bring them back for the required care. I also would be hesitant to buy a cat at a pet store, mainly because my Father has owned one for the last twenty years and has told me all the negatives you did. No offense taken here at all :) :) :)

We normally do get most of our pets from the shelter. Several of the dogs we have adopted in the past came from there. Some have been strays that ended up at our home because the dogs in the neighborhood told them to come to our house!!!! I have bought one puppy once and she was a registered Cocker. All the cats I have ever had have been strays up until now. My dh stopped by the pet store and was looking at the fish when he fell in love with these two kitties. They are already a few months old so in a way they were not wanted. They were quite inexpensive so I guess if you back out the cost of the vet care they have alredy received then they were almost free. This was the cleanest smelling pet store I have ever been in. It is brand new and you would never be able to guess that animals were in there if it weren't for seeing the animals in there.!!!! ANYWAY!!!!!!!! Like I said we had already been to a couple of shelters...one here and one up in N. Ga when we went camping last week. The kitties that we really liked and thought would be a good match for a almost 5 year old were not ready to be adopted. We tried and these kitties were SOOOOO cute. Of course now we have spent almost $200.00 on getting supplies and toys!!!!!!!

I do not know how to post pictures on here so I do npot know if I will ever be able to get a picture of them on here. BUT if I ever do I will post one!!

I thought the fees at most pet stores was to cover the cost of shots, spaying, etc., and they get no profit from it. At least, that is what they said at the Pet Store I go to. On the weekends, many of the Foster parents :D are there with them.:D

That would depend on the type of pet store you are talking about. There are the shops that in the business of selling animals - like dogs and cats. Then there are pet supply stores (like Petsmart) that are in the business of selling supplies. These stores often work together with a local shelter or animal welfare group, using the store space to showcase animals available for adoption. My local Petsmart does this with the Nothern Virginia Animal Rescue League. These cats and dogs are not bred for the purpose of retail. The are rescued and/or homeless animals that are in need of a home. In this case, the money you pay for the adoption DOES go toward the care/medical needs of the animals. Traditional pet shops get their animals from breeders (mills) who mass produce animals for the purpose of retail. These animals often have serious medical problems. This is why I say don't support traditional pet shops.
