MIL and her SO decided that they can't make it for Thanksgiving (unless we pay for her medication - she is a prescription drug addict and we won't do that!). And my mother just called and said that they won't make it either, due to the weather.

I told DH we should just donate the turkey and go to the casino for buffet.

I don't know whether to :worship: or :confused3 .

We have had pretty awful weather for this time of year, so it really isn't shocking that my parents won't make it. The back roads are awful, but main roads are clear. We have had freezing temperatures and snow lately.

Now it is just the 3 of us, and a whole Thanksgiving dinner, complete with a 22 pound turkey.

Any elderly neigbours without family that would appreciate not being alone on thanksgiving?

That sounds like heaven to me!!! I love quiet holidays.

Bummer, something similar happened to us one year. It snowed an inch the night before so everybody canceled, and I am not kidding, one inch. We have all lived in WI our entire lives and no one is able to drive in a little snow?

Is there a thread yet with great recipes for leftover turkey? Looks like you are going to need it!! :)

I would donate the turkey and any other food you already have prepared to a soup kitchen or homeless shelter that is having Thanksgiving.

I understand.

We started out with just the 4 of us (DH, me & 2DS). I wanted to keep it small because I've had to be out of town for the last 2 thanksgivings.

Then DHs uncle died, so we invited his aunt, and cousin who's in town helping clean out the house and cousins son - so we're up to 7. Then my sister (who's visiting my mom about an hour away) invited themselves. Now we're at 9. Oh, well, better invite MIL & her hubby (making us 11). Turns out they already have plans. Then my mom decides that she should invite my niece and her boyfriend as well as recently seperated step-grandson. That makes 14.

So I now have 8 pounds of turkey breast (no one likes dark meat) and I buy a 5 pound ham to supplement.

THEN, DHs aunt, cousin, and son drop out. Mom informs me that niece, boyfriend, and step-grandson aren't coming.

So we're now 6. OK, back to original plan - small gathering, lots of food!

:cutie:

Cook it freeze it and take a few nights off for thanksgiving throughout the next months.

I would donate the turkey and go out for dinner. I've heard so many news stories lately about how the charities and food banks are still in need of turkeys and other items to give away. I'm sure there are still places that would be happy to take it. With only 3 people, I think it would be great to relax during the day, go out to eat and come home to a clean kitchen!

Do you belong to a church? I'll bet there are some elderly folks there who would love to be invited to dinner..:goodvibes

If not, I would go ahead and cook it - rather than go out in bad weather.. Eat what you can and freeze the rest.. (You could even make your own tv dinners like I do with leftovers.. Also save some turkey to freeze to make soup later in the year..) Oh - and don't forget to leave some out for sandwiches!

I hope you're still able to enjoy your Thanksgiving - no matter what you decide to do..:goodvibes

I like the way your husband thinks!
