Please note: This is NOT intended to be a debate on occupancy.
We are a family of 6 (parents, DD13, DS11, DD5, DS2), and when we booked AKL, we were inadvertently put in a 1BR, versus the 2BR we would have preferred. Waitlisting got us nowhere, so we were "stuck" for three nights. Since occupancy becomes a heated topic here, I figured I would give my opinion on how it worked out for us, so people would understand the logistics of trying to push the occupancy limits.
What worked for us: There were plenty of towels and storage space. We liked the king bed. All sleeping arrangements were comfortable.
What we didn't care for: It WAS a tight fit! More than one bathroom would have been handy, especially since DS11 is a "sitter". The lack of privacy got old.
Other thoughts: Our biggest immediate issue was the difference in sleeping habits. There really isn't a lot of quiet space, so it seemed like we spent a lot of time tip-toeing around sleeping people. Seriously, this gets old, and should be considered by anyone wanting to push the occupancy envelope. It may not have been so bad if all were adults, but even then you have your morning people and not so morning people. We did have the crib in the bedroom, but the other kids were out by the kitchen area--as soon as Mom was up, their sleep time was limited.
After our AKL stay, we moved to a BCV 2BR. We liked the layout better, and found that the extra room did a lot of good for family relations. All 4 kids were in the second bedroom for sleeping, and could watch TV or whatever in the living area. We didn't feel so on top of each other, and it seemed like everyone's mood improved significantly. Yeah, it might have been Disney magic, but mind you, we were there last week, with Fay camping out, so it was quite damp and soggy all week.
We did like AKL, but would never consider scrimping on points to stay in a 1BR. Really, the family harmony alone is worth the 2BR.
