We shaved the cat last night

With the title of this thread I was kinda afraid to open it!! :rotfl2:

Glad I'm not the only pervert around here! If it were allowed I'd be posting the most hilarious reply :lmao:

Baxter is senile. He frequently forgets where the litterbox is and cleaning is not high on his priority list. Brushing daily helps, but a human can't do all the work that a cat is naturally supposed to do. He does feel better now and is lying on his favorite chair sunning himself. He's in a good mood today, but he usually is after a shave. ;)
Awww... the poor boy. I think he's lucky to have you then! My cats do still groom themselves a lot, so I couldn't imagine what it would be like if they didn't. Even with them grooming themselves, we wind up with bald spots now and then this time of year. They find the mats before I do and yank them out

I bet that sunning feels great on him! And if you can, I'd love to see a pic of your boy. I admit I get a kick out of shaved animals ;)

I tried the lion haircut on my long-haired mutt of a cat a few years ago. She was great when I buzzed her back, but wouldn't let me near her stomach. So she walked around for a few months with a reverse mohawk. I wish I had taken a picture!

That second picture is too funny! Man, cats are ugly without all their fur!

sajetto, love to see a pic of Baxter!

Ours is a Maine Coon too. Does your cat naturally behave well for the shave or do you do something special? Baxter did great while he was distracted with treats, but once his belly was full it was a nightmare. Do you have any tips?

I wish I had some good tips for you! Buster just growls and bites DH during the shaving process! DH uses his "small animal voice" (high-pitch baby talk!!! :teeth: ) while he is shaving him and he also gives Buster LOTS of praise. I think that has a little bit of an effect. He usually ends up looking like a lion with a bushy tail!

As for brushing him (as I was reading, I saw these tips), Buster does get brushed, but has a hard time grooming himself. He just gets mats! Shaving just makes him feel better, I think! He is always happy once the actual procedure is over!

My cat Tallulah had to get her bootie shaved- her fur back there is really long, and she had a lot of trouble keeping it clean (which you can imagine led to problems!), so the vet suggested shaving it. She has the kitty version of a Brazillian!

...................And we have battle wounds. He lit into my ankle and arm. Poor DF came away with the bragging rights, a huge slice into his wrist.

Baxter looks hilarious, but on the bright side he's sooooo happy today! We shave him this time every year b/c he mats so much and gets miserably hot. We don't let the vet do it b/c he has to be tranquilized to travel (you don't want to see this kitty in a car :scared1: )

It took at least 2 hours because we had to keep giving him breaks. In the end it was worth it.

Does anyone else have to shave their Maine Coon or Persian?

All i know is that if someone tried to shave me from head to toe they would have battle wounds for sure... :lmao:

Why do people get pets (cats AND dogs) with fur they are not willing to take care of? I knew someone who used to shave their Sheltie because they were too lazy to brush him.

If you brush your own hair, why not your pet's? Fur is protection....
I never put a shaver/razor to ANY of my pets! :sad2: Just brush them with a fine tooth brush for cripes sake. :rolleyes2

There are no words to describe how funny that second picture is. I haven't laughed over something like that in along time. We should have a caption contest for that one!!!!!!!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
OMG POOR KITTY!! :guilty: :sad2:

I'm afraid it would require the use of another word for cat that starts with P and won't make it past the censors! :lmao:

The vet told us it was the best thing for Baxter. Because of his age he tends to forget to bathe himself at times making those huge mats. Trying to brush those mats out just hurts him. He has a terrible time with shedding year round and we've tried multiple hairball treatments and foods. It helps, but sure doesn't take care of all of it.

We think that he takes it badly b/c the clippers make so much noise and vibrate on his skin. Do any of you have quiet clippers?

Hi! I work for a vet. We just bought some quiet clippers for work. I will find out the name if you want.
Does your vet offer clipping? We do it a lot this time of year.

Oh thank you! I would love to know what kind they are. I wish his Doc could clip him, but we keep the visits to a minimum b/c he is so frantic in cars. The vet even perscribed us some sort of sedative for him in the rare case that we would have to put him in the car. We've only used that perscription once when I got really worried about Baxter forgetting where the litter box was.

Um, I honestly believe that was one of the hairless breeds. Nothing to worry about there!

And Poly Princess :rotfl:
I know we trimmed one of my cats tush for a while when she was on a more special diet that made it hard for her to clean... if you know what I mean, but the way you described it

I have a himalayan, and about this time every year, we take him to the groomer's, and they give him a "lion" cut. He likes it in the end, and he just looks so darn cute!

That sounds really cute Court!

BTW way off topic but I'm lovin the new tags. I live in my rainbows too! I just love how they mold to my feet. Everyone on the east side of NC wears them so you'll see them in stores when you go to Duke

I will check and post tomorrow. BTW, your vet, if he would shave your cat, could use a quick sedative and then reverse it. We have had some people request a sedative but we have not needed it. (Others we have)!LOL!!
Will try to see how expensive they were and where we got them. They are quieter, but sometimes it still freaks them out.

ROFL at your title! :lmao:

I'd love to see a pic of your cat! We have a Ragdoll, she's our little baby. :) I'd never heard of shaving cats before this thread, but it does make sense!
