We are a group of six staying at the HRH for six nights during Presidents week. We have been reading the menus for the Universal properties and realize it's going to cost a fortune to eat on property for the entire trip. Will it be worth it to rent a car and use the I drive at least for breakfast and lunch some days? We dont mind spending for nice dinners.
Does anyone know of any good car rental deals?
Any highly reccommended restaurants on or off property would be appreciated.

We are a family of 5 staying at HRH for 6 nights. We too have considered the expense of eating onsite all the time. We are driving to Orlando so will have a vehicle, but do not plan to go offsite except one day and night. . . this is also for parking reasons.

We created a menu planner to help us along with this issue. We needed to know how many meals to plan for during our stay at HRH and we wanted to make sure we were able to visit the restaurants we really want to experience. We too don't mind paying for nice dinners but wanted to try to economize a bit for the other meals. There are ways, none of which are cheap, but more economical. Bring some food items with you. Some for breakfast and even some things that your family could eat after a long morning in the park to hold them over until the evening meal. Pastamore, on CityWalk, has an inexpensive breakfast with large portions that our family plans on sharing. The counter service in the parks is going to be more expensive than your typical drive through fast food, but are usually generous portions as well, you may be able to save during lunch by meal sharing. As a benefit, by not eating 3 full meals each day, our kids will be hungry for supper and may actually eat what they order :yay:

There is a book titled Universal Orlando 2008 by Kelly Monaghan, which includes a WONDERFUL dining at a glance section. This could be invaluable to you, plus the rest of the book is excellent as well. You could find it at your local library or bookstore, but I purchased ours online at www.intrepidtraveler.com. I got a nice discount there as well.

We do plan to have a few meals off site, but most are prior to checking in at HRH, and we are going to Busch Gardens one day during our stay at HRH, so will eat all those meals off site. It seems that renting a vehicle would likely negate much of the savings of eating offsite. Since you would need a van or large SUV to accommodate your group, you would likely pay a pretty substantial rate. . . .unless you could make ressies before you go and get a killer rate.

I assume you are flying in. Make ressies with a car service (there are many here who can recommend one for you), use your complimentary grocery stop to pick up some food, drinks and a cheap styrofoam cooler, or two. When you check out, leave the cooler next to the ice machine for someone else to use. We take two coolers, one for drinks, another for food such as milk, yogurt, lunch meat, cheese, grapes, cut-up veggies. We can save on at least one meal a day and know our kids are getting some nutritional food. Besides, doesn't eating grapes, carrots and broccoli cancel out those empty, useless calories we consume all day at the park???:thumbsup2 Sorta like ordering a diet coke with your fries :rolleyes1

Anyway, hope this helps with your planning. Enjoy your trip!

We always drive/have a car but never leave USO if staying onsite.
We usually take breakfast and snack items with us, and eat 1 large meal a day.

Between paying for a rental, gas and parking you would be better off putting that $$ toward your food allowance.
As for your group how many adults/kids?
Must do's sitdowns for us are
Mythos in IOA
Finnegans in US
Margaritaville in CW
Islands Diningroom in RPR

must do counter service
Enchanted Oak in IOA
no real counter service must do in US but we do like IF&FF
the counter service area at Pastamore and the window at Latin Quarter in CW

with the HUGE portion sizes they offer (even the appetizers), we never eat more than lunch & dinner:confused3 sometimes only a large early dinner; then a snack later. (However, our teenager seems to always be munching on some snack or another lol)

could be the heat/humidity/rides curtailing our hunger or the fact that we tend to guzzle liquids all day...add it to usually gorging ourselves for 5 days prior on Disney's dining plan & food tends to take a back seat for us and our food expense is usually under budget:thumbsup2

We are 5 adults and one 17 year old. All of your ideas are exellent. I really appreciate the suggestions. We just felt like our choices for eating are very limited. I guess we will have to make due. It does not make sense to rent a car for our group.

We just felt like our choices for eating are very limited.

How do you feel that you are limited?
Between the parks, CW and resorts you have a huge variety of cuisines

I meant we are limited with choices for cheap breakfast or lunch. We see lots of choices for a nice dinner.

OK got ya. I never would consider giving up park time to leave for B&L so I really thought you were wanting to leave for dinner. Somehow I glossed over that part of the OP......
As others have said, portions are usually big enough to share.
IE the chicken salad at Mythos is huge, as is the combo plate at Enchanted Oak or the mixed grille at Finnegans. I would say try ordering 4 entrees or 3 entrees and an appetizer to begin with. If it isn't enough food you could always order more.

For breakfast we take breakfast bars, instant oatmeal cups, fruit cups, yogurt cups, juice etc. We eat in the room while getting ready.
On 2 dayswe usually have sitdown lunch at Finnegans or Mythos, then window/counter service at CW. Then we'll switch it up and do a counter service lunch at Enchanted Oak and dinner at Margarittaville.
First night's dinner (if we don't eat on the road)is usually at the resort we are staying in, which is usually RPR. Breakfast on the day we leave is usually the same.

We usually stop and pick up breakfast items and snacks. Lunch menus are more reasonable than the dinner menus, so we make a late lunch our big meal for the day. Universal has so many great restaurants, the hard part is picking which one. :goodvibes

We used to live in Orlando and LOVE to eat at Sweet Tomatoes. It is only about 5 mins from Universal and is well worth the short ride off property. Their official website is http://www.souplantation.com/. My DSs (5 and 3) LOVE it and eat better here than anywhere else (including inside the parks). It is about a 30 foot salad bar with around 6 homemade soups daily, 3 pastas to choose from, potato bar, fruit bar, ice cream, and desserts. Everything is included in one price so it makes for a nice lunch or dinner. We will be arriving in Orlando on 1/14 and ST's as my DS5 calls it will be our first stop after leaving the airport.
