We moved to Orlando! Three months in.

Can you give us details of the neighborhoods you live in and found them to be safe, family oriented, nice homes, good ammenities, and with good schools. You're right - moving just for Disney is a bad reason. Everyone needs to look at the bigger picture before making such a big decision of transplanting the family.

I'm not the OP, but for anyone looking at Orlando I recommend Dr. Phillips and Windermere. Both communities have everything you are asking for. The more central neighborhoods are quite nice too, like Winter Park, Thornton Park, Delaney Park, and Audubon Park. Seminole County (north of Orlando) has some good options as well. It usually comes down to work location, personal preference, and what you're looking for in a community.

For those wondering how we survive the summers, it's easy; we go from air-conditioned house to air-conditioned car to air-conditioned building. Yes, summers are brutal, but heat can't trap you like snow can. Hurricanes are pretty darn rare. It's been 10 years since a bad one hit us (the Northeast has seen more bad storms recently!).

I love it here. Sure, there are some things I'd love to see change and grow here (the arts and culture scene, in particular), but I think Orlando is growing more and more every day in a good way. We're getting a top notch performing arts center, a downtown creative arts complex, and more. Plus, being close to the parks is wonderful. There's nothing quite like being able to make a spur-of-the-moment decision to go watch Wishes :goodvibes

I posted about pro's and cons for a Florida move just a few days ago, so I'm glad to see a thread with people who have recently moved! Right now, we're literally in the middle of compiling data on cities and states to potentially move to, and Florida is coming out ahead. For us, it's not so much about Disney as it is about the type of life we want to have. We want nice weather that won't shutter us in our home for 3-4 months a year. We like water and the activities that come along with living near it. I'd love the ability to grow just about any type of plant or tree for our yard (also fresh citrus!). We're not really sure about having kids or not, but it's nice to know that their are fantastic schools around as well. Ultimately, we'll look at all the OCD lists I've made detailing pro's and cons of places and decide based on that, but the pro's for Florida seem to be piling up!

Your list sounds a lot like ours did! We looked at the entire U.S. and crossed off states based on proximity to the Ocean, home affordability, recreation, how likely family was to visit us... My husband is a country mouse and I am a city mouse. I don't think you could find a better place for my family, Orlando might be the right place for you as well! Yesterday we walked around Downtown Disney and then watched the pouring rain from the new Starbucks porch. There isn't really another place like Disney to just people watch for a while.

I love everyone's input & viewpoints on this topic. We're considering this ourselves, with my main reason actually being to be closer to Disney. I know that's not the best reason, so it's good to read all of the various pro's & con's out there. Granted, I don't think there are enough con's out there that would make me not want to move closer to the Mouse. But again, the more info the better. Keep 'em coming!

Hi! I work for HCA, but in a free standing ER a few miles away from Osceola Regional Medical Center. Are you at Celebration? What area do you work in? My family loves it here so far. Still getting settled in. How are you guys liking it so far? I have a few co-workers who work for FL hospital at Dr Phillips.

We moved to an area called Waterford Lakes. It is a collection of neighborhoods in the northeast side of Orlando. We originally looked at a place called Avalon Park, but Waterford Lakes is much more wooded and has more of an established feel. Both neighborhoods are connected and we would honestly love to buy a home in either area. Schools are top rated, awesome homes with lots of gated communities (if you like those-we don't see the point as these are very safe communities) and great shopping and access to highways. We are about a half hour from Disney.

:wave2: We are in year 2 here. We lived in Waterford Lakes/Avalon Park area for a year before we bought our house out in Wedgefield last year!!! We absolutely love the area too. We bought out in Wedgefield because we wanted the land, but I love community area of both AP and WL!!

I'd love to hear more negatives. :) My husband wants to move there but I do not.

We moved here in May. We did move here to be close to Disney, but it's so my husband can be close to work. We relocated when he got a job at Disney. He has dreamed of working there for years, but it was still a scary decision. We have no regrets. We love it here! We were vacationing here 2-3 times a year and every time I dreaded leaving. Now we can go to the parks whenever we want. Sometimes we just go to Epcot for dinner.

We came here for Disney, but we love it here for many other reasons. The area we live is so peaceful. It was planned out with sidewalks that go on for miles and miles, and it's just beautiful here. Even the shopping centers where Publix, etc. are nicely landscaped and blend in well. We feel like this is where we are meant to be!

How did you pick your town/neighborhood? Did you take multiple trips to look around or decide more quickly? DD is hoping to work for Disney and DH and I are tired of northeast winters, so we are considering relocating to the area in a few years. Just wondering the best "plan" for determining the best spot yo live when you're not totally familiar with an area. Thanks for any input !

The process with Disney took about 3 months from the time he applied to receiving an offer. He was contacted within days of applying, and had a good feeling about it throughout the process so I did a lot of research in that time. We have kids so schools were most important. We also wanted a short commute to Disney, and a safe area. Those criteria narrowed things down a lot.

Disney does relocation very well. We have moved a lot with his previous job, and this was the easiest move by far. They have people to answer questions about neighborhoods, schools, property taxes, drivers license, and everything else. When we came for our house hunting trip they had someone meet us at our resort who showed us around Orlando, gave us maps, and lots of other information. They were also very helpful with commute times. We were also provided with a fantastic realtor that works with lots of Disney relocating families.

We only took one house hunting trip. It was the end of the school year, and my oldest does not like to miss school. After seeing the areas and neighborhoods, and looking at several homes we felt confident that the area was right for us. We weren't sure on a house yet because we had looked at so many in such a short period. Fortunately, we didn't have to decide quickly because Disney provided temporary housing, and the kids were now out of school for summer. We lived in a furnished apartment for a couple of months (in the same area we were looking for a home). After we moved in the apartment we decided on a house within a couple of weeks. It made it easier because we knew we weren't in a huge rush to pick something, and we took a couple of weeks to decide.

Our search was narrowed down to an area called Horizons West before we even came here on our house hunting trip. It fit the criteria we had very well. It is a very planned out community in Windermere and parts of Winter Garden. I found a map of it online that showed grocery stores, schools, and neighborhoods that was very helpful. Our realtor later gave us a magazine type thing on Horizons West with the same information in it. We just liked the feel of the area, the schools, it's very close to Disney, and it's safe. After we got it narrowed down that far, being able to hear the sounds from MK, and being able to see the fireworks sealed the deal! Several months later, and settled in to our house we are very happy with our decision.

Sounds like you are very happy! :-). We'll be going it without relocation help, as we will probably wait until DH retires. Dd is graduating college, so school district needs are not our concern. I would love to be near Disney but near the ocean, too, in a safe area with stores and sidewalks. :-) I think I may be taking a few trips In the next few years!

Schools not being a concern will certainly make your search easier. Clermont isn't far from Disney, but the schools kept us from looking there. It's pretty with rolling hills. Good luck with your search!

Question for those that moved to Orlando from the northeast (or similar climate):

Do you ever feel like you simply traded several months of wanting to stay inside due to cold, for several months of "too hot"/staying inside?

I've become interested in such a move someday.

Hello!
I recently (4ish month ago) moved from Maine. While the summer months were very hot, I found that I adapted quickly! A few early mornings the past few weeks its been in the 60's-low seventies and I had a fleece jacket on until the sun came up and things warmed up!

When it was super hot I noticed I slowed down a bit and spent less time at the parks and more time swimming and going to movies etc but ...Its nothing compared to becoming a hermit in the winter months back home! Plus NO SNOW!

Hope that helps!

Funny, it got to like 80 here in Syracuse today, and I was feeling "too hot".

So maybe it's not meant to be for me!

Hi :wave2: I can give you a few things I didn't like. Now I moved to Orlando to do the Disney College Program (which was overall positive) and only stayed for about a year (grad school and all) so I wasn't worrying about things like schools or good neighborhoods to buy a house in so I can't comment on those but of the of places I've lived (2 in GA, 1 in NC, and 1 in Scotland; which isn't many, I know) Florida is my least favorite. I should also say I lived right off of Disney property so some of these issues may not apply if you are farther away. And of course its shaped by my wants and experiences.

1) Its hot. I'm no stranger to southern heat and humidity since I'm originally from GA but I still hate walking outside and having my clothing stick to my body. You have to make sure you hydrate well and don't get overheated. I'm used to the heat and can deal with it just fine but I don't want to.

2) I did tend to hibernate during the hottest parts of the year. My CP stretched the summer and pretty much everyone who had been there since the winter was FAR less motivated to leave the A/C, not even Mickey could draw us out some days (at least not till the evening). Plus summer was the busiest time everywhere. At the mall. At Disney. At restaurants. It is just plain busy.

3) Traffic is a nightmare. Not just your regular traffic but the tourist who is lost and will swerve across 5 lanes of traffic to get to that exit then swerve back in because that wasn't the exit kind of traffic. I also found there to be more wrecks than I was used to and a lot of them are on Disney property (which is where I spent most of my time when I dared the heat).

4) Toll roads. I hate them. With a passion. Maybe because I was only making a few cent above minimum wage. But there are so many and they get so so expensive. The non toll roads are crowded with people avoiding toll roads.

5) Like any big city there is crime and a fairly large homeless population. Because Orlando is a tourist area with a lot of minimum wage workers a lot of the people you deal with are going to be poor (many Disney cm's often have to have one or more roommates to afford an apartment). A lot of people will lose jobs and become homeless. I'm pretty sure a few documentaries/sociology papers have been made/written about it actually. Its an unfortunate side effect of the nature of tourism jobs. You'll notice this more in downtown Orlando proper as opposed to towards Disney but it is a problem.

6) A lot of things are closed or run down. We just went through a pretty bad economic downturn and it shows in Orlando. Many of the shops and attractions that used to be open are now closed, a lot of those are the "tourist traps" of old and those building and lots have not been maintained.

7) (This could totally be a pro depending on you) Almost everyone is a transplant. I worked with few people from Orlando or even Florida. A lot of people move back home after a few months or years of being in Orlando because there isn't much to tie them to the city. We would have at least 2-3 people quit each month to move back home or somewhere else. I know that some Disney cm's wouldn't even become friends with/hand out with CP's because there was a new batch every 5-6 months.

8) Brain eating amoebas in the lakes and rivers. Shutter. And alligators. Makes recreation a little more limited.

9) I am from the mountains where in the spring and summer everything is overwhelmingly green. I love tall green shade trees, forest, and mountains. Everything Orlando basically doesn't have. Palm trees just don't cut it for me. Although I do like Spanish moss.

10) Tourist. Tourist everywhere. Which I didn't really mind personally but it can for sure be a con (especially if your grocery store is one of the ones tourist use, there can be constant shortages on the most random food items. And around CP move in at least 3 drug stores and 2 walmarts will run out of thumb tacks. Plan your thumb tack shopping ahead of time, is what I'm saying).

11) Hurricane weather. And how humid it gets after any rain.

12) Its. Too. Hot. Yes this was also #1. But gee golly its just hot. An unhappy sort of hot.

There were things I did like. Like being able to find some of the Scottish treats I missed and the impressive selection of international food (thanks tourism!). Oh and Publix. Publix is nice. Plus being close to Disney and the beach is nice. But personally for me the con's far far outweigh the pros. I would move back for a great job but not just to be closer to Disney.

Oh and I highly suggest people watching at the outlet mall. That was a huge pro.

Hope that helps! Also did I read right that you were from SoCal? I know that one thing a few of my fellow CP's that were Cali natives really disliked were the food options. Apparently Orlando's verity pales in comparison to SoCal. No personal experience with that but it was such a common complaint it turned into a joke of sorts.

If you move down pick Florida for all the things you like about it and not just Disney. As you can see loads of people on this thread had lots of pros beforehand and absolutely love it. Like any major move (that isn't motivated by a great job offer) make sure it fits more than one thing you want.:goodvibes

Sorry to kind of hijack the thread op! I'm glad you love Orlando!

You may not want to reveal your husband's position with Disney but for other's thinking this is typical I assure you it is not.

Sorry to kind of hijack the thread op! I'm glad you love Orlando!

I lived in Orlando for two years and agree with everything you posted. I miss Disney (and no state income taxes), but don't miss living there.

Just moved back to Florida after moving back "home" to PA for 9 months, I'm SO happy to be home!!!! I missed everything about Florida!!!!!

I just wanted to say to the OP and all the other contributors-THANK YOU!! This is a great thread.

I am hoping we can someday move to Orlando, or at least Florida. I admit being close to WDW is definitely a perk for us, but really, if I never have to see another winter again, and I mean yucky, icy, grey all the time, cold all the time winter, it will be too soon. (And I am only as far north as Northern Kentucky, I don't know how you real northeners do it!)

We have our youngest son who will always live with us and he does so much better when he can be outside rather than stuck in the house all winter. Plus WDW makes him very happy.

Someday, someday, someday...until then ya'll enjoy your Florida! :beach:
