We leave Saturday, and DD is throwing up

wash those hands!!!!!!!!!!!!don't eat or drink or kiss (hard to do with little ones)the infected!!!!!!!keep toothbrushes away from everyone else's and pack some pepto bismol and gatorade.
I am a nurse and the #1 thing to do is wash your hands!!!!!!!!
keep hydrated and your fingers crossed. I will say a prayer for you......don't worry.........it won't help, it will give you added stress and put your resistance in compromise......everything always works out!

enjoy your trip........I am sure you will be okay!

I agree with jmay127-- bringing an already sick child or adult to a crowded places is just irresponsible IMO. Would you send them to school in that condition?? I gues some would.

Um, CFD, maybe you didn't read their post. They are talking about leaving and knowing their child is sick. Nobody expects someone to see into the future and know their child will get sick on vacation. Those things just happen and its again the luck of the draw - I have two children myself. But to go on vacation with a sick and potentially contagious child is a different story altogether. And for the record, no, it doesn't make me feel better to blame the previous family. It was a tongue in cheek statement after reading people stating they cannot afford to lose their vacation money by having to cancel though it is perfectly acceptable for them to knowingly take sick children somewhere, make other people sick and ruin those strangers vacations. But maybe that's just simple common courtesy.

I am with you here. My kids have gotten sick while we are at WDW. We did not rush them around to parks as they needed to be seen by a doctor and we had to postphone out trip home (change flights) because they were too sick to fly (and so was I). I would never take a child on a trip that is sick. Especially vomitting etc. I think it is cruel to the child. I am sure that you as an adult would not want to be stuck on a plane or rushed around an amusement park vomitting and pooping your brains out. Flame away but this is how I feel. I can't afford to throw money away either but their health comes first. JMHO.

Oh, that stinks. The good news is, she should be all better by the time you leave. Also, I have read that a high percentage of what we think is the stomach flu is really something we ate. Maybe that is the case with her and there isn't anything for you to catch.

Good luck!!

Wow! I NEVER expected this thread to get controversial!

Oh well. . .

So far so good. DD4 still seems perfect, I'm doing great (a little off but nothing I can't live with), and DH is travelling, so I'm assuming he's fine.

So, DD2 first got sick on Monday and so far is the only one truly sick -- do you think this means we're sort of in the clear? Her fever is gone, she hasn't thrown up since Monday, but she still has very loose stools (consistency of, say, cream of broccoli soup -- but not water!). Is she still contagious?

Any thoughts?

I'm just a nervous sort of person, and we've put a LOT of money (by our standards) into this trip (we're staying at BCV) and have planned so much for the girls . . .

If it is truly roto virus, it is contagious up to 12 days after the initial onset of symptoms(per my MD). I didn't know that at the time, and sent DD back to daycare after her symptoms stopped. But half her class ended up with it the next week.

OK, here's another thought. DD2 got sick on Monday. About 1.5 weeks (DD4) - 2 weeks earlier (DH), DD4 and DH were sick with diarrhea, mild fever, and general lethargy. But almost two weeks had passed, and DD2 was fine . . . is it at all possible that this (though more intense) is the same thing??

You remind me soooo much of myself! I was in your shoes last week. DD got sick with a cold on 4/25 and by that night was complaining of ear pain. We took her to the doctor that night at 8pm and sure enough she had an ear infection. :( The doctor said she woul be in pain on the flight and prescribed 10 days of antibiotics. !0 days of antibiotics that "could upset her stomach."

We obviously dont want her in unnecessary pain on the plane and we certainly didnt want to trapse around Disney with a 4 year old with an upset tummy that didnt feel well. And another thought I had was that the antibiotics would probably make her even MORE susceptible to the sun.

Soooooooooo...ONE DAY before the trip (4/27) we rescheduled. We were looking sooooooooo forward to it. I had all the ADR's with all the charecter meals in place. It was her birthday 4/23 and we were supposed to be celebrating it IN Disney for 2 weeks. :( It SUCKS to be the parent and make decisions like this! But obviously, you need to put your childs health and well being first, ya know? I wouldnt want to go on vacation if *I* didnt feel well.

Im getting long winded...LOL....to the point and less about my personal opinions...we rescheduled for 6/1 without problem...got ALL my ADR's that at wanted at the times I still wanted and an even BETTER ADR at CRT (Breakfast!). I was truly shocked I still got everything I wanted 5 weeks before the trip!

This is when you need to trust you Mom gut and go with it. If you are going to be worried about how she is then you wont be having any fun either.

And for what its worth...DD is FINE now...I should be in Disney RIGHT NOW! But I am really glad that we got the trip insurance and rescheduled because like you I am too much of a "what if?" person!

Good luck and I hope it all works out.

I keep hearing about Airborne and I would love to know more about it! We are going at the end of september, about 3 weeks after preschool starts and it will be my DD3's first time in school so I am already planning on keeping them out the week before we go. Is Airborne available in Canada? If not is there a Canadian Equivalent?

I am hesitant to post, but those of you who have knowingly flown or travelled with sick children are extremely selfish - I'm sorry, but that is what insurance is for. I don't understand this mentality that it's ok to do what I want and the heck with everyone else? You could have made an entire plane of people sick - but hey, you would have been having a good time on vacation and wouldn't have lost any money. What a horribly selfish and irresponsible thing to do.

To the OP - Rotavirus is highly contagious - my baby daughter (20 months) almost died with a combination of strep and rotavirus (caught it at Disney - how do we know? Had a total physical right before trip - bloodwork, etc. passed with flying colours, so pediatric specialists in Orlando were able to isolate the onset of the virus to Disney - we were also put in total isolation.)

You need to be very careful as this could get nasty and so you need to let your child heal, as well as stay away from others (please have housekeeping totally sanitize your room each and everyday as well). Healing hugs to your child and the rest of you that you don't get sick as well as being sick while on vacation is very, very stressful - especially when there are sick people around you who don't take care of themselves. It's hard to heal up that way!

Hope your child is feeling well soon, Tiger :(

I will not get involved in the debates, here. . .

I just think I should clarify, that I have NO IDEA if what my DD2 was sick with on MONDAY is the rotavirus. She had a fever, threw up after ONE meal (about three times, but it was all the same meal) and has had loose stools -- this is the only symptom that remains. Since that time she has been eating and drinking without episode. AND, the rest of us show no sign of being sick. Sheesh.

We once flew with both kids having the stomach flu (one threw up at the check-in counter, the other in the car just before he stepped out!), one having strep as well. What did we do?

We got on the airplane, asked for trash bags and extra towels, and got on with it! We made sure to bring soda crackers for the 5-hour flight, but it worked out well. The flight attendants were not too thrilled with us, but what could we do? It was two days before Christmas and there was no way that the airlines would reschedule us without a fee, let alone find us available seats at that time of year.

Yes, we sound like horrible people, but we weren't throwing over $1,500 in airline tickets away, as well as 3 weeks in California with family I only see once a year. The way the airlines are not flexible about illness leaves passengers with no alternative but to fly.

For our WDW trip, DH & I have already discussed what to do if someone gets sick, and that would be to go anyway, the sick person staying behind in the hotel. If it's a kid, we'd tag team so we'd both get out to the parks.

I hope your DD feels better!

What gave you the right to expose others to your family being sick, you knew your kids were sick and yet you didnt care? They should have never let you on the plane. I bet mothers at your childrens school must just love you. "oh little Johnny only has a little stomach flu he can go to school". STAY HOME!

HollyB- usually I find your posts to be a bit extreme and abrasive, but in this case I have to agree with you. :thumbsup2

I'm glad you're daughter is feeling better, and glad to know that no one else in your family experienced the dreaded "crud".

Go to Disney and Enjoy Yourself!!!!!!!! Have fun and make some wonderful family memories!!!!!

You are incredibly selfish ! To fly kids across the country with Stomach virus and strep! DO you have a clue that someone else might have gotten seriously sick from your family. My DD had to hospitalized and have IV fluids at 10 months old because of being so ill. And then to say you will go to WDW anyway because you can't throw money away. None of have money to throw away and we pay over $5000 for our trips but if we were sick we would stay home for our sake and everyone else. It's called being a decent human being :rolleyes1 . That's what trip insurance is for  .

OP I hope your DD is feeling better and none of you get sick on your trip.

Agreed.

Last year, our DD got sick 2 days into our vacation and we were at the FD trying to re-schedule the rest of the trip to some time in the future. We were also getting phone numbers for the airline. We gave her some medicine and stayed in for the rest of the day. We made all the necessary calls and decided not to change anything until the morning in case it was just the combo of the heat/travel. Well lo and behold the next day she was fine! :woohoo: but we would have NEVER EVER thought of staying if our child was sick!!

I agree Holly!!!

We made it! Noone else in our household has gotten at all sick this week, so we're going to Disney World tomorrow!! Because I'm now totally paranoid, I have practically an entire suitcase of antiseptics packed, which I otherwise wouldn't have, but we're going with DD's pediatrician's blessing! :goodvibes
