I can't believe this! It was monsoon pouring out this morning and I was rushing back into the house to grab my breakfast bar....So I slip on the wet deck, do a very graceful split, hear my ankle pop, and land on my ample behind. :headache: DH drives the kids to school and takes me to the dr. I was thinking it was just a sprain, and I'd be able to go to work tomorrow. Nope, I fractured my fibula just above my ankle. I go to see the orthopedist tomorrow, but my dr told me I can't put any weight on it for a while.

So, does anyone have any idea what I'm in for? I've never broken anything before. You should see me on the crutches:scared1: it's not pretty! How long do fractures take to heal? I'm thinking I should look into scooter rentals for our trip. Maybe an offsite place so I have one guaranteed, but I don't want to have to shell out the cash unless I have to. Ugh, I don't suppose these scooters will fold up to fit in a mid-sized rental??

Thanks!
Kim

I can't help you, I've never broken anything either. I'm so sorry to hear that. Here's hoping that it's healed enough to make your trip enjoyable for you.

My sister had ACL surgery just a few weeks before a trip about 10 years ago. We rented her a wheelchair the entire trip and did just fine. We were able to park in the handicap parking too- I believe we drove into the parking lot (we rented a car for our trip) and told the CM that she couldn't walk etc. They wrote us a special pass that we were able to use the length of our trip for special handicap parking. Most of the parks had wheelchairs available in the parking lot to get you to the gate too. We had a great trip regardless of her injury.

I'm sorry to hear about your accident. The up side? You'll get some extra special treatment while at the parks. Good luck at the orthopod. tomorrow!

Oh, no! What awful timing. I'm so sorry you're hurt. I've only broken (and dislocated multiple times) my kneecap, so I'm not familiar w/ healing time on broken ankles. Hopefully, you'll be good enough to do WDW w/o too much hassle!

Hello Kim

I am so sorry to hear about your fractured ankle. It is a monsoon out there today.

I wish I could help on the amout of time it takes to heal but I am unsure.

My mom is going to check tonight for the name of the company she rented from. She recently rented one in Orlando for my Aunt. It was a smaller one and fit in the trunk of the car. The company was great, delivered it to the hotel and the cost was about $150 for the week.

I will PM you as soon as she get the information for me.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I broke my ankle a few years back...

I was in a cast for 6 weeks and then in a support boot for another 4 weeks after that.

GET THE SCOOTER -

Oh, Kim, it really IS monsooning out today, and I can see how easily that can happen! So sorry to hear it.

I was going to say about 6 weeks for the bone to heal, so you really should expect to rent a scooter or get a wheelchair. On the up side, you'll be very used to getting around with a broken ankle by the time your trip comes around!

That stinks!!!

Definitely go with a scooter. Walker Mobility is a great choice for a scooter and it costs $30 a day with free delivery and pick-up to your resort. This company was referred by our travel agent and they are very helpful.

Good luck!

P.S. I just listened to the latest email podcast and heard your voice mail (you and your son). Your son is a hoot "if you want to watch movies with stuffed animals") :lmao: Great report!

Kim, check the disability board FAQ. They have a list of the ECV rental companies. Most if not all will deliver directly to your resort. You can call to see if there are certain models that will be easy to put in the trunk. I used a scooter 2 years ago for Mousefest. I used it because of stamina issues due to just getting off chemo. I used Disney transportation and with the exception of 1 CM at the monorail, every CM was very helpful and understanding in my getting on and off the buses (mostly on).

Kim

p.s. I broke my fibula in college. They gave me a walking cast. Not that you want to walk around WDW on a walking cast, but it does make getting around a little easier.

Really sorry to hear about your fall! Sorry, but I've never broken anything either so I'm clueless as to how long it might take to heal. Just try not to stress too much (I know, probably way easier said than done) and get better soon!

Thanks everyone. I am definitely going to check out the scooter rentals. I'm trying to put a positive spin on this. I guess this will force us to slow down and take in the details. What a perfect thing to do at Christmas.:santa:

Kim

Here is the good news...the fibula is a non-wight bearing bone in the leg. So...you could possibly get away with a cast with a walking boot so that you will be able to walk normally (albeit it...with a cast)

You will have the cast on for 6 weeks or so...but then you should be good after that.

Or, you could suffer mercilessly while you family makes fun of you <MUHAHAHAHAHHA>

Love you Kim!

Oh, no!! Sorry to hear about your ankle! Hopefully, you'll be a pro on the crutches by the time your vacation comes around. Wishing you a speedy recovery! :)

Ouch!!! Sorry to hear about your ankle. Hope you can still enjoy your trip.

Sorry to hear about your ankle.......
Hopefully you can still enjoy vacation.

Rent a wheelchair and let somebody push you around....
It's a whole other Disney experience.

Make sure you carry a few colored sharpies... so the Disney Stars can sign your cast!

so sorry to hear! sending good vibes your way for a speedy recovery...that rain was outta control yesterday, that's why i didn't leave my house!! :goodvibes
