We have slashed our Disney dining budget!

After spending thousands upon thousands of dollars of our hard-earned money on Disney Dining the last 9 years, we have decided to re-evaluate our dining choices. We have been eating 2-3 TS meals (regular and Signature) each day for years now, but this is about to change. I know so many people here struggle with this same question: out of pocket, TIW/DDD, DP, eat in room or off site, so here is where we stand:

1. More CS - We used to be very anti-CS meals. We don't eat fast food or drink pop, so many of the old CS meals were yucky, but as of late, we have discovered some hidden gems: Tangerine Cafe, Earl of Sandwich, Wolfgang Puck and Cosmic Ray's. We have had some great soup, salad, wraps and other delightful food. We still don't like how CS places are set up, and we hate eating outside where it's hot and sweaty (we always go for 2 weeks in summer), so we are going to supplement our TS and in room food with CS choices as mentioned above. We will do a combination of sorts. It will save lots of money and time!

2. No more DP - We really like the Deluxe Plan, but it's too costly (we did Deluxe for 9 days in May and regular for 4 days) and takes up a huge amount of time. Our kids are great restaurant kids, and we don't waste time, but we can't control the kitchen or servers, so this is a big problem when eating 3 TS meals per day. Again, it will save us money, allow us to make changes if someone is sick (we won't lose credits) and give us more choices - best part is that we don't have to order yucky kids' meals for our kids! Yeah!

3. TIW/DDE & AP/DVC discounts - We have done this several times before, but our last 2 trips, we used DP as hubby wanted to try it out. We are excited to get the TIW card again as we can order adult meals for our 6 and 2 year old, as well as order extra appetizers if we like. We don't drink alcohol, but we do like milkshakes and bottled water, so now, we will get a discount on these as well! We will also utilize our AP & DVC discounts if necessary as well.

4. DVC villa kitchen - We are actually looking forward to eating in our room and at the pool. We always have a car, so grocery shopping is no problem for us at all. We will eat breakfast in our room most mornings (we have a few breakfasts scheduled: 1900 Park Fare, Donald's, Cape May and Kona Cafe). We are looking forward to using the beautiful kitchen in our villa for more than just snacks and beverages! Again, it will save us money!

5. Less character meals - We used to be huge character meal people. We always go for at least 12 days each July as I'm a teacher, so we used them to cool off and to get awesome character interaction. Most buffets are slipping big time though, and so we have phased out many of them as they just aren't worth it anymore. This will again save us money and time!

6. Bring more snacks into parks & try new snacks in parks - We struggle with allergies/sensitivities around here, as well as low blood sugar (3x of us), so we have made do with eating several meals each day, and snacking on fruit, frozen lemonade, popsicles or ice cream. Now, we have decided to bring more snacks into the parks with us (we will always still buy our bottled water as we can't drink Orlando water), and we are looking forward to trying cool World Showcase snack foods that we have usually bypassed.

At this point, we are really excited for our next trip. As DVC members, our vacations are always evolving, and this time, will be no exception. We've eaten almost everywhere on property, so now, we are being more selective in our choices, and combining lots of different options together, instead of only utilizing one option.

I hope this info proves helpful to some of you who may be struggling with the same thing.

Happy eating to all, Tiger :)

Thanks - we don't care for SS at all, Tiger :)

Neither do we - but you missed our favorite off the CS list - Columbia Harbor House.

I just wondered if you might experience severe TS withdrawal symptoms being so used to 2/3 sit down meals a day - would the regular DP work for you with one TS per day? I fully intended to eat mostly CS meals this year (and we will also have a kitchen area in BCV) but only a couple of days ago, I relented and added the regular DP onto our booking - didn't fancy the QSDP at all

I understand what you're saying. We started with the DxDP for our trip this May/June, then we realized that we didn't want to spend many hours each day at the TS restaurants, so we changed to the DDP, then we realized that we'd still have to schedule a TS every day, so we changed to the QSDP so that we'd have more time to enjoy WDW, and save about $480.00 in food. That's quite a savings! We plan on doing breakfast in our room at CBR (we estimate about $50.00 for brekkie, drinks, and snacks from Garden Grocer). We have a ressie at CRT that we'll pay OOP for on our last night. We figured that we would have spent enough in tips on the DxDP and the DDP to eat at CRT! We're very happy with our reduced dining budget.

Hello!!! We don't do many CS, just more villa eating. Where are you staying? Some DVC resorts have grills and we have utilized these!! It makes eating in a bit more interesting! Also, we have thought about ordering pizza from an off site pizza place....that would be great at the pool. And way cheaper than any TS place! We don't have kids but sometimes DH and I just have snacks at the pool in place of a meal...veggies and dip, bread and cheese, etc. Have fun and happy saving!

We thought Columbia Harbor House just served burger, fries and fish? I'll have to check the menu, as we don't eat fast food. Thanks for the suggestion. We might even give Sunshine Seasons another chance as well as we went at the end of the lunch hour last time, and there wasn't a good selection.

Sorry if my message was too long - we aren't going from a ton of TS meals to 0, we are supplementing with CS and eating in villa (this trip we are staying at AKV & BCV). We will absolutely still do 1 TS per day, and some days, we will do 2. For example:

B - 1900 Park Fare
L - CS @ Cosmic Rays
D - Villa, CS or TS

We are looking forward to balancing out so many TS meals per day, with other options. We love Plaza Restaurant @ MK, and it's light enough, that we could do that 2x in one day if need be. As well, we also like Signature restaurants too!

Thanks for the discussion, Tiger :)

We have done WDW for four years in a row now. I love scheduling our dinning and usually to 1 TS a day depending on what park we are at. This past August we tried the DDP for the first time. I have to say that compared to the previous years, we saved quite a bit of money and got to eat at restaurants that we otherwise wouldn't have been able to afford. Having an hour and a half break from touring the parks to be able to sit down and reflect on the day so far and enjoy a Disney Restaurant is time well spent.:thumbsup2

I agree with you that it is time well spent, but not 3 TS meals per day! We've eaten pretty much everywhere, so now we are supplementing with other options that previously we wouldn't give a chance to. Because we travel in the summer when it's hot and humid, we love TS for the air conditioning, but we don't love the longer meals (used to be able to get in and out in a reasonable time), the increase in prices and the subpar service, so instead of sitting down in a TS, we'll hang by the pool (we hardly use the pools) or do some other leisure activity. We used to rely on restaurants for this cooling down period, and although they are good for that, in most cases, sometimes they are also frustrating - especially when they are running behind or really noisy/crowded.

It's great that Disney gives us so many dining options, isn't it! Tiger :)

for what its worth I can honestly say we haven't had any "fastfood" at Disney for our last 2 trip, other than DD5 who may turn into a bowl of mac n cheese one day. That being said weve had great salmon at SS and a noodle something that was good as well as other options . I think the key is that they made the food right then, it wasn't sitting out. Thats the great thing about Disney if you don't like one place move to the next..........good luck and enjoy!
