And I didn't even realize what it was!

The radio is saying it was only a 3.9, but holy cow!

I was sitting here on the computer when I heard a loud BOOM and the house vibrated a little, but I didn't think anything of it because they are building houses all around and I just thought it was construction equipment!

Sheesh...what's next!

Blondie,

Do you live near Charlottesville? DH works near UVA and he didn't feel a thing.

No, I am in Fredericksburg, closer to Chancellorsville.

Good Lord! I didn't feel anything here in D.C.! What is UP with these earthquakes lately? SCARY!

Shake, rattle & roll; earthquake hits Virginia

Frank Hammon,
WFLS News

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.9 has been recorded in Central Virginia.

The quake was reported at 12:32 pm according to Diane Noserale, spokeswoman with the U.S. Geological Survey center in Reston. Noserale says the center was 5 miles east of Columbia, Virginia.

She says it's not all that unusual for one to happen in that area of Virginia -- the Central Virginia Seismic Zone -- where there's a history of prior earthquake activity.

911 centers and radio stations in the Frederiucksburg received numerous calls right after the quake. Spotsylvania Emergency Services Manager Doug Boggs says that calls have come from Northern Virginia, Shanandoah Valley as well as around the Lake Anna area and Charlottesville.

A number of calls came from the vicinity of Lake Anna.

Dominion Virginia Power operates a nuclear power station there. But according to Dawn Eichen with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management there have been no reports of damage there.

One woman described the quake as "feeling like being in a boat on rolling water."

If you go to usgs.gov and click on earthquakes, there is a form that people can use to report if they felt the earthquake. Interesting to read, there have been a few reports from your area.

Thanks for that link Barb!

Hey I'm in Charlottesville. We felt it for sure...29 news said the epicenter was in Louisa. This is the 2nd one in 6 years, we had a small one when I lived in Louisa.

.....and to think that people are afraid to come to California because of earthquakes!

Hang on tight and enjoy the ride!!! ;) Glad to hear no one was injured

Yup.. I will take an earthquake anyday over a tornado or hurricane
