We had a really bad experience at Chef mickey's

Absolutely not. Stay on these boards long enough and you will hear something bad about each every restaurant. And every resort.

I have ate at Chef Mickey's twice. One breakfast and one dinner. The character interaction was great at both. The food was good as well.

If you are unhappy with how the food is, or feel that the characters are not spending enough time with you, the time to complain is there and then. That is the only time they can take action and actually rectify the problem.

As someone who has grown up in a restaurant family, I would say this is good information for many restaurants, but not necessarily WDW restaurants. Chef Mickey's continously gets bad reviews on the DIS - sure the DIS is only a small represenation of WDW travellers, but still an important representation, as far as I'm concerned. I have spoken to several character meal managers over the years, and nothing much can be done:

Characters - Managers will get the character handler for you and have characters come to your table if you have been forgotten about. But, if it is super busy, as it is usually is at Chef Mickey's and O'Hana (we've had major character issues at both), their hands are tied as the characters need breaks, etc.

Food - The food is what it is. The sundae machines are always broken at CM's because people let their kids play with them, what do you expect a manager to do? The food is bad for many of us, but not for all, so what again, do you expect the manager to do? If it's cold, then the he/she can have the chefs replenish, but what else can be done?

Wait times - CM's is so overcrowded because families spend too much time keeping the characters at their tables, kids running around unattended, etc. The check-in line at CM's is horribly long, and then you have at least another 30 mins (every time this has been our experience for 3-4 people) wait to be seated. The wait times are a problem due to the amount of people, and the families who feel that they are the only ones there in attendance. The only thing the restaurant manager can do is speak to the character handler. Remember too, that there are many special occasions celebrated at CM's as well, so this also takes up time.

Dirty & noisy - Again, too overcrowded and way too many unattended kids. Managers can speak to parents, but I imagine it's hard to figure out whom kids belong to. I have seen managers speak to kids who are unattended at times at the buffet as they were sticking their fingers in the food, but it hardly happens and CM is one place that I have seen kids do disgusting stuff to the food (and yes, I have told CMs about it).

I guess for me, not much can be done as these problems are the nature of the CM beast. Food quality can be improved, but I am betting they won't do it as they are booked solid. Wait times and noise are dependent upon your crowd, and so with lots of young babies/kids, this is to be expected.

Good luck to all those eating at Chef Mickey's, Tiger :)

We know that it was not the norm for CM as we ate there at least 7 times before and loved the food, character interaction, service, etc.
On 2/6 we had a ADR for 7:15 am and were seated by 7:20. There were 6 of us, including 2 little girls and my autistic 17 yo son.
The food was cold even the food that was just set out as we passed them doing so. Eggs, French Toast, potatoes, etc. The server seemed hurried and only asked us what we wanted to drink, gave it to us, picked up plates only once and they were getting quite piled with 6 of us at a table, and gave us our bill. The characters just came by, signed autographs for the 2 little girls and didn't stop to take a picture with my son even though he was standing there and they turned around and faced him and continued turning to the next table. They did interact with toddlers seated next to us.
If this was our first time there we would not go back. Crystal Palace was so much better in all above catagories.
Who can we contact to give our opinion at CM's that would actually care?

That's such a shame we were there in Aug and it was great.

You can contact wdw.guest.communications@disneyworld.com they will get back to you.

We no longer go to CM. But we LOVE Donald's at the AK. The food is wonderful and my kiddos love the parade. The juice they give you is my favorite! I plan to book the last seating this year so that we can sample both breakfast and lunch.

I'm not sure this is going to be possible. We ate at the last breakfast seating, and they were starting to set up lunch, but they did so in certain sections - they left some breakfast food out, and that is what those of us who were still there were allowed to eat from. Lunch costs more (it is not characters though), and there is also a little bit of down time in between (I think they close for an hour to clean and set up according to CM), so they were watching that closely. At least this was our experience in May.

Happy eating, Tiger :)

There is a new post over ont he Disney Dining Reviews board about Chef Mickey's that is very positive. And from the pics the food looks good too.

I just think that the old saying about people being more liable to complain about a place than to post saying good things is true. That is why we see so many more negative posts about any place on Disney property, than positive. I still wouldn't write a place completely off, or change an ADR that I already had, just on what I read on-line. But that is me. Ymmv.

Thats a shame you had a bad experience...we went in 2005 for my DS's 8th birthday, the food was NOT good, but we had great character interaction and a great server who made sure that Donald Duck brought out the birthday cake I had pre-ordered, actually the server had the cake but Donald was with. I did see the characters sort of rush with other kids and parents WERE HORRIBLE at watching their kids...or should I say NOT WATCHING their kids, it was mayhem. I cannot stand parents who let their offspring run wild while they sit on their kiesters acting like "I paid for this, I can do what I want!"
On our trip in 2006 we did 3 character meals...LTT during MNSSHP which was great (the characters had Halloween masks, etc), Park Faire which was GREAT, the characters were very interactive, and Crystal Palace, which was the best! We were dancing w/Piglet & Pooh and acting silly and the food was hot & fresh and the whole place was spotless. We are going in June but we are not doing any character meals this time.

I am worried now....we are going toward the end of march and I was really excited---but now reading this post I am wondering if i should change it?

Same here! We have ressie for breakfast in May. I hope this is not a trend for CMickeys. We heard so many good things before.

We always do Crystal palace for dinner and the food was always great. We returned this past December and the food was still good but the overall the the characters spent at our table was limited compared to previous visits. This will be our first CM visit though.

Sorry to hear about your horrible dining experience though!

I can't find a telephone number for Chef Mickey's. I emailed them on March 1 and so far no response. Does anyone have a number that i can get to Chef Mickey's. The dining number for Disneyworld is no help whatsoever.

And about some of the posts-I mentioned that we ate there 7 times before and loved it-that is why we went again. So it wasn't just one bad experience. We were aware of how kids run around there and how the characters move around. This time was definitely not like the other times. If I had not had a good experience each and every time before this visit, we never would have made the reservation.

I am sorry that you had such a bad time...we ate there on Sunday March 8th, had 10:30 am ressies and were seated at 10:15...the food was awesome! Hot fresh and plenty of it.

You make a number of excellent points. We went to CM for years and years and finally enough was enough. Each year it was dirtier and dirtier--we always go at 5 so I can't imagine how dirty the buffet and floor were by later each evening. We didn't have much issues with the characters. The Food was always ok. Nothing great nothing horrible not usually hot though. Lots of little kiddos serving themselves though and sticking hands in stuff--staff watching wouldn't remove the rest of the touched food. We also had issues with check in. We'd get there at 4:30 when the place opened at 5 and waited in a line full of kids whose parents were letting them run wild (and bother people in the lounge but I think they moved the lounge now). It was bad enough my kids were disturbed by it. We can happily eat at CP and Tusker House buffets but never again at CM. When the staff doesn't care that food is dirty I'm ready to move on.

From my experiences with this issue, this is EXCELLENT advice. If a character skipped or 'glossed over' your table, tell your server, the manager, and/or the character handler. Almost all of the time, they'll arrange for another meet with that character. In my case, I'm in my late 20s, so I guess some characters think I'm there just for the food, thus I've had to request a 'do-over' several times.

We will never return as the Characters just do NOT interact with adults without children with them, and we have eaten there three times over the years

First dinner was with a bunch of business associates of my DH's as we were there for a conference. Not a single character came to our table and we were there a really long time.

Second time it was DH and myself and we were totally ignored once again.

Third time was a family gathering and my Dad paid for us all to go to that dinner together (or I would never have returned otherwise). We had two toddlers in the group and they got a very brief greeting from two characters. When my grown son and his fiance asked if we could get a picture with this one character, he literally turned his back and walked away. I was furious and did complain to the manager. All the manager could say was he would have the character stop on his next round which would be in about an hour. We were not about to sit and wait an hour for him to get around the restaurant again.

LTT used to have great interaction with adults without kids with them, and CP is very good too with adults.

Our experience at Chef Mickey's was less than stellar too. Our main gripe... the food. Not pleasant at all. The characters were nice. Service good too. But the food was just terrible. So we will not be returning to Chef Mickey's. Crystal Palace though was amazing. Great food. Great character interaction.

I completely agree. It was the same for us. We like Crystal Palace but 1900 Park Fare is wonderful! All the character were amazing with my 6 month old which shocked me. :goodvibes

I've eaten there three times for breakfast. March 2006, March 2007, and May 2008. The food was not the best in 2006 (some of it was cold), but it was great in 2007 and 2008. We're a party of 3; my parents are in their late 50s, and I'm 25. I pass for a 13 year old, though. :rotfl:

Character interaction was fabulous in 2006 and 2007. Chip and Dale were the best in 2006, and Donald was fabulous in 2007. Donald that day made my entire trip, he was so hilarious and great with me (I'm the Duck's #1 fan, or so I tell others ;) ). Was really excited to go back in 2008, but was disappointed. Food was great, but the characters barely spent any time with us. Just enough time to sign my autograph book and take a very quick picture and they were off. I wanted to retake a couple pictures that turned out poorly, but they were gone before I could check my camera. I tried to talk to them, and they'd gesture a quick response and then off they went. I was really disappointed, especially since we were there as things were settling down and people were leaving and not entering. Our ADR was around 10:50 and we weren't seated until about 11:10, I think. I did see several of the characters just hanging around and playing with a few families and/or groups in the back side room that has the best view of the MK. Oddly enough, that's where we sat the first two times, and where we had the best interaction with the characters.

Our server was MIA most of the time. He flew in and asked for our drink orders, and then came back 15 minutes later with them. Only cleaned the plates off the table 1 time, and that was when we were almost done. Another 15 minute wait for the bill. I'd look around the restaurant every few minutes, and I never saw him anywhere. And I had a pretty good vantage point, too.

I'm hopeful it'll be better this year. But if it's not, I doubt I'd go back whenever I go to WDW again.

Chef Mickey's was the first meal we ever ate at Disney World in 2007 and it was a great experience. The best character interaction we had that whole trip. Thus the reason we booked it again for our Sept 2008 trip. The food was not too bad on that trip but the character interaction had gone down hill pretty badly. We put it off to it being free dining and they were in a hurry with the crowd. We decided to go back in Dec 2008 for our first Christmas trip. Figured we had just been at a bad time with free dining and all. NOPE! The character interaction was worst than in Sept. and the food this trip was not good at all. Our server this time around also was not very good. Hardly came around to see if we needed drink refills or anything. We left there thinking well maybe something is going on with all the renovating they are doing at the Contemporary. We are not sure that we will ever return here though as the food esp. was not very good our last trip.

Overall the best character interaction we ever had was on our 2007 trip. We have been back twice since that trip and it has gotten worst each trip we have taken. Our worst experience was at Liberty Tree Tavern in Dec. They were so rushed they did not even want to take pics with my son. In the end they did but right after the pic was snapped they patted him on the head and went on there way. Barely came back around either.
