We took Avery to a new Pediatrician today and we really liked her and so did Avery. :) She was very open to our beliefs concerning medicine and extended breastfeeding. I am glad that it was a good experience. :)

DD does not have eczema. She has Keratosis Pilaris which someone here suggested on my eczema thread. There is nothing we can do to treat it since it is herditary, but at least we know what it is. :)

I am so glad that you found a pediatrician that you all like. That is really important :)

I am sorry, but I am still somewhat new to this board. I didn't read the eczema thread. However, I do have a few questions. How old is Avery? My DD, age 4, gets bumps that pop up every now and again. They are flesh colored, not red. They don't appear to bother her at all.....no itching, no fever, no problems. This has been going on for about a year. I brought her to our doctor and she didn't seem too concerned at all. She said it was some type of allergic reaction to detergent or something. I believed her at first, but I don't believe it now. I don't think that is it because it isn't going away permanently. It always seems to appear in the same place when it does come up. There is a cluster of bumps around her wrist area, and every once in a while they appear around her chin. I have been baffled over this!! Does it sound anything like what you are dealing with?

That is great news that you like this new pediatrician. Did she give you any advice to keep the Keratosis Pilaris in check or what to put on DDs skin if she gets itchy or anything? I'd love to know. My DD's skin is very sensitive and I'm never sure if it's something like Keratosis Pilaris, Eczema, an allergy or just sensitive skin. I will definitely discuss this with her doctor at her next appointment.

TLHB70-My DD is 20 months. My Dd gets hers on the wrist area also Ont he top of the wrist if that makes sense. They are most common the thighs, backs of the arm and face. DD are not itchy and do not appear to bother her in any way.
Here is a link that might have some helpful information: http://www.dermatologychannel.net/follicle/keratosis.shtml
I have switched detergents, lotions, everything and it has not helped. It is hereditary and there is no cure or way to prevent it.

suzannen-She told me there was nothing you could do to prevent it really treat it since it is hereditary. Not the news I really wanted to hear! LOL! But at least we know what it is. :)

Thanks for the info, Jenn Lynn. I'll definitely check out the website you gave. Glad it doesn't seem to bother her.

Thanks so much for that web site. I am going to print it out and bring it with us to the doctor. Maybe that is it because, like you, I have tried changing all detergents and nothing works. I have used the antibiotic ointment and that doesn't work either.
Does Avery's appear, disappear, then reappear again in the same area like my DD? Are Avery's red or flesh-colored? Anyway, I am glad to read that it will eventually go away!

Gald you found a pediatrician you feel comfortable with, Jenn! That's so important. We moved 5 years ago and I still miss our old one. :(

All I can say is WOW!
Thanks for the topic and the links folks. I am 38 and that explains ALOT for me.
Thank You...

Edited to add...
I am just floored that I have had this ALL my life and the many derm docs I have had NEVER told me....Maybe they didn't know???
I have be looking into the ways to treat it.
Again MANY MANY MANY thanks to YOU for this thread.

Acutally, I AM a pediatrician AND my own daughter has keratosis pilaris as well.

It is essentially dry skin, which ends up clogging up the pores and results in those little red bumps.

The best treatments are mild moisturing soaps (Dove BARS, not the body wash stuff), and lotions containing alpha-hydroxyl. Eucerin makes one that is over the counter, and there is a prescription compound called Lac-Hydrin.
