I would like to thank everyone for the tips over the past few days. Today I put my deposit down for 450 points at SSR. I took the $90/point option, and will keep (probably bank) my 2004 points.

We split the 450 points into 3 contracts of 150 each... that way each our 3 kids can have one someday. Our kids seem to be as addicted as we are! The 50 year contract was a major contributing factor to us choosing SSR... all for the kids sake of course :)

Our use year is March... which from what I can tell is a reasonable month to have if you need to book around the kid's school schedules. I am not sure it will matter too much for Debbie and I... but it might become a bigger deal working around our kid's college spring break schedules, and summer trips. Some day, our kids will probably have families and will want a UY that works well for school age kids. I hope March is a good choice... I plan to research this a bit more... and change the UY if I think I am making a mistake. The only normal UY that I was told that I could not get right now is February.

We will pay cash for the condos... actually charge them to an airline credit card and get the extra air miles for a couple of free tickets. I will pay off the CC immediately, so there will be no finance charges.

Once again... thank you for the tips. I think that we will really enjoy SSR. Our kids love going to DD... especially DQ. I also think that the transportation options from SSR will be good because of DD, although we typically rent a car.

Wow!!! Congrats!! So, you "bit the bullet" and went for 450 instead of 300!!! How exciting!!!

I'm sure there's a DVC guide who's out celebrating this Fri. evening as well!!;)

Congrats again, and WELCOME HOME!!!!

I was not aware that once it is sold that it could be changed. I had thought that this was "set in stone." Any one know for sure?

By the way: Congratulations and welcome home.

Congratulations and Welcome Home :)

And welcome to our little community on the DIS!

You have obviously done your homework before making your decision. Congratulations on many happy vacation memories to come. WELCOME HOME!

Congratulations and Welcome Home! :bounce:

BTW, Use Year can NOT be changed. They are sold with an alotment of points, and are forever tied to that point allotment.

We have a March UY, and have never had a problem with it.

SSRex,
You are right (once the right of recision has passed), however the OP could get the guide to write him a new contract with a different UY if he has not signed the contract or hasn't passed the recision period....

FLYNZ4,
Congrats on your purchase and welcome home! I would say March would be a good UY for summer visits--assuming you are not planning any Christmas/New Years visits.
I have a Feb UY and I bought two more contracts with different UYs (Oct and Dec) to cover my Oct/Nov/Dec and Jan trips. UY doesn't make much difference if you never cancel your ressies. But, for some folks (like me--a big worry wart)--it gives an added measure of comfort to know that a cancellation by a visiting family member between 1 and 30 days for a New Years Eve visit (where the point costs are at their highest) will not put me in a bind to use the points within 30 days or lose them (30 days in the case of my Feb UY--you would have 'til the end of Feb with your March UY in the above scenario).

I just gave them a call on Friday afternoon and put the deposit on my credit card. I have not seen the paperwork yet, so I know that I could change my date if I wanted. You make a good point about December holiday vacations... but I can find a flaw with every month I could possibly choose. As far as I can tell, March is about as good as any UY, so I think I will just stick with it. March was supposidly not being offered... but my salesman was able to get it on exception. He said that February was simply not available... I was thinking that Feb would have been better... but your Xmas example might indicate that March is better... at least we would have an extra month to get down and use our points.

I personally think that the 100%/50%/25% banking policy is an unecessary complication and a little petty for DVC to impose upon us. I can live with it OK, but I wish the restriction did not exist.
