It feels Great...Welcome to the load off my shoulders club!

Our goal was to have our mortgage paid by the time I turned 40 and we did. A lot of extra $ to the principle since day one, it sure added up and took years off our mortgage.

We had a burning of the mortgage celebration! A lot of fun for everyone

We have about 10.5 years left on ours. Hope we can cut it down even more! We do pay extra each month but not a full payment extra.

What will you do with the extra money each month now? Will you have it go into a special savings? By the time we're done with the house payment, we'll have 1 going to college, so I know where that payment will be applied!

Congratulations. So for all of you who are mortgage free, how did you do it? Just pay extra every month, extra payment a year, etc?

Someone told me (a very wise man) when DH and I first got our mortgage if we paid double the principle each month it would take a month off the end of the mortgage. So that's what I did and we saved $97,000. Our mortgage has been paid off for 4 years now! It seemed like a slow process, but it was so worth it. If that man didn't mention that little "fact" I would have never known I could do that...I called him and thanked him when we were paid off, he was excited! He then told us about the mortgage burning ceremony LOL

Good Luck to all who want to use this system, just remember be consistent and do it EVERY month, no matter what!

Congratulations to everyone! I think we have about 11 years left. We refinanced when rates were really cheap and went from a 30 to a 15 year loan. Honestly, between the low interest rate and being able to deduct the interest it's really not all that much extra to carry the loan. Plus, our house is worth about 4 times more than we owe on it. Life is good even with a mortgage.
