Last May we got "married" on the Disney Wonder and on April 19th we are legally going to be married in DC. I don't personally need the marriage license, the cruise was good enough for me, really for both of us. however, to get my lovely wife on my insurance, we need it.

Congratulations!

Forgive us if we happen to think April 19th is pretty special. It will mark our 21st anniversary together.

Congratulations!!

We too won't get legally married unless doing so would give us more treatment like a married couple for tax purposes. Or as in your case in order to get benefits. We've been married 15 years.

Congrats!!! Wishing you both a wonderful life!

I'm planning my wedding ... just looking for my future wife!:wave2:

Congrats! How was the ceremony on the Wonder? I've not read a thread that describes a wedding on the ship yet :) Do you have any pics?

Congrats!
We got married shortly after it became legal in CT(live in NYC), and were amazed at how different we felt afterward- I didn't think it would change anything, but we looked at each other on the way home and commented on it- we somehow felt more 'solid', if that makes sense. We'd already made the commitment, so why the difference?
Congrats again!!!

Just my two cents ... I believe it should "feel different". I haven't taken that step yet, although discussed with former partner. I guess I'm old school - I believe in "happily every after" and "to death do us part" (Could be the southern baptist upbringing??). Gay or non-gay, marriage is the ultimate commitment in my mind.

I ramble ... I wish you and your spouse a lifetime of happiness!! :goodvibes

Lisa and I felt the SAME way after we got married in DC on March 19. It was hard to explain, but we both felt complete and "solid" is a good way to describe it.

To the OP.....congratulations!!!!!

Thanks for all the well wishes. We felt "different" after the ceremony on the Wonder, but not so much after the DC ceremony. For as much planning as we did for the cruise wedding is as little as we did for the DC ceremony. I like to tease DW and tell her she only married me for the benefits ;)
I never really needed to be married, what i wanted/needed was to stand in front of those we love and commit to one another and i don't need the law to tell me that's ok to do. What i really needed was for my DW to have some health insurance that covers something. I may be sharing too much, but here goes. My DW has multiple sclerosis, diagnosed last year about two months before our cruise. Shocking and devastating to say the least, it made that ceremony all the more special. Her previous insurance did not cover the uber expensive injections she needs every month, so she has gone without. At first we charged the injections to a credit card, but that was not a viable option for long. We have been very blessed and so far her case has been mild, but that can certainly change. Now don't misunderstand me we are both gainfully employed physicians who can't afford these meds, so what do other people do who have less in the way of means. I am not going to get in to the details of our economics, obviously, but we just couldn't do it :( Sorry for the rant, but i always feel comfortable on these boards to share.

Congrats. Did you do the courthouse thing in DC or a ceremony somewhere else? My thought is that the wedding on the cruise was your "real" wedding w/ all the planning etc & the one in DC was just a technicality to make it legal, And that's why it didn't feel any different of more special. You two put your hearts, love, & dreams into the cruise one. I do understand somewhat. DD was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. I was working & had great insurance, but we contemplated moving the wedding date up so that I could quit work (1 hr drive) & stay home (15 minute drive) to get to her at school if needed. We decided to hold off & I used the family medical leave act to my benefit. You have that option too now. I'm so thankful that some states are starting to realize that people have the right to get married. I've said for a looooong time the reason the government didn't want to over turn don't ask dont tell is b/c of how expensive it will be to cover all the gay married couples for benefits. Question though: If you two move to another state are you still recognized as being married? B/c its a state law I wasn't sure. Like if you can drive at 16 in the state where you live & you go to a state that the drivers age is 18, can you still drive there? As a side note: I tell DH I married him for his ......equipment.:rotfl: May your life be filled with everything wonderful that life has to offer. Please pass our well wishes onto your wife. If you have any pics (of either one) I know there are a bunch of us who would love to see them.

Congratulations again. We have many friends who got legally married years after their original church weddings. Most of them celebrate both anniversaries since each date has different meanings for them, but, both dates are about celebrating their commitment to each other.

Congratulations!!!! I am an optimist who believes that someday soon we will all have the right to get married legally no matter what state we are in.
